  1. Saw this interesting post on our Canucks forum ('Armchair GM'ing) & wondered what you guys thought about this re-ordering of our roster. Personally, I don't agree with trading Burrows, as he has made some good plays with the Sedins, not as great as Kes used to be, but still some decent chemistry there. Here's the proposed/fantasy trade: The poster stated that Malholtra is no longer what he used to be (after eye injury) & that we needed a 'proven center' & Schroeder is not ready for the job yet. If 'NTC' was waived, then the following-- To Philly: Burrows Hansen Cannata (G) 1st Round pick To Van: B Schenn Read He also says that it's a lot to pay now but future looks good for promising RW Read & Philly has 'log jam of centers' so won't hurt them losing Schenn. And they can fill out RW with Burrows/Hansen. Also would allow us to free up cap space. I agree about the cap space, but I still think that's a lot to give up for us. Any thoughts?
  2. @jammer2 Damn Agree button!!
  3. @jammer2 Are you by chance going to the Allstate All-Canadians Mentorship Cup at the Hershey Center in Mississauga this coming Sat 10th? Team Giroux vs Team Spezza....... I'm assuming this won't be televised either!! grrr.... allcanadians.com
  4. Thanks for that jammer, indeed a good informative read, I need all the help I can get...LOL !
  5. LOL!! Case in point! I knew you wouldn't disappoint me JR!
  6. @jammer2 Wow that's pretty impressive, all the work that went into this....I'll bet there's 1 person on this forum that knows about this already: @JR Ewing LOL! Or if not, he'd be fascinated with the stat work..haha Gonna try looking for some 'Nucks on there! lol
  7. @jammer2 Jammer, my friend, I didn't think I could be any prouder of you than I already was....(sniff...sniff)...LOL!!
  8. Aug 9th marks the 25th anniversary of The Great One's shocking trade from the Oilers to the Kings. It was such a momentous occasion that Sportsnet and TSN have each produced a 5-part TV series, which begins Monday Aug 5th, to air on their respective networks, and ending off on the day of the anniversary. It seems each station will cover different aspects of the story and how this event changed hockey forever. I, myself, sort of dropped off from watching hockey, after the great run of the Oilers in the mid-80s, and just a year or two prior to this trade. By that time, I had lost interest, so didn't have much opinion or emotion about the trade (that I can remember, anyway). But I'd be interested to know how this event that shocked the hockey world affected some of you at that time, and what you felt about it, and the subsequent changes it made to the game. Or, if you are ambivalent about it...haha. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/sports-networks-dig-deep-to-mark-25th-anniversary-of-gretzky-trade/article13572541/
  9. My favourite position was always Goalie, I loved the challenge of it. But we mostly played in my friend's basement, so no getting socked with wet sopping tennis balls! It may have been due to the rainy weather days here,so we kept it inside. For some reason, we never thought to have any padding or mask, just a stick & glove worked. (Might have had knee pads).
  10. Yah, I like Jonas, but I didn't know about the vertigo! Geeze not a good situation for any G. Glad the Ducks kept him on...the tandem sounds great, I'll have to pay more attention this season.
  11. Oh wow, that is SO sad. You still see quite a lot here in Van, but I suppose as you say, not as much as the old days. Thank Nintendo, XBOX, Wii....LOL
  12. @yave1964 Yave, you are a machine. Your display name should now be dubbed Yave "Wikipedia" 1964. I also think we should start a new thread entitled: "When Does Yave1964 Sleep?"....or a poll "Does Yave1964 Sleep?"..... However, I must dock you points for the Quack joke....
  13. @yave1964 Yah, you certainly do make some good points & to be honest, I didn't have a whole lot of interest watching the Sens last season (or much in general) for obvious reasons...not a top team, they're Eastern, & headaches with 1 flippy/floppy Canadian team is more than enough (grrr...haha!). But just to add another point for fun, I don't know the details of all the injuries for the Sens, but just to give an example, based on my (grr) Canucks: Kesler seemed to be at the top of his game with sky's the limit just before he had his 1 or 2 injuries that knocked him out flat for a considerable amount of time. Granted, he tried to return too early imo, & re-injured himself again. Last season when he came back, he just never seemed to be even half of the star he was, which was 1 of my biggest disappointments with the team. Imo, I believe that set the 'Nucks back big time, the triple threat of Kes & the Sedin twins was gone, & trying to plug in Burrows, Booth, etc. to fill in the gap just never worked as well or as consistently enough to make enough of a difference. On the flip side, Lu had issues with a groin injury, which I honestly didn't think he could bounce back from, as effectively, not to mention is a devastating injury for a G...but to my surprise, he came back in full force & hasn't had much or any problems with that since. So anyway, just some thoughts on the injury side of things....I do hope the Sens come back strong this season, we desperately need more representation for Canada by end of regular & most definitely in the playoff rounds....AT LEAST PAST THE 1ST & 2ND ROUNDS, (before we get el booto by the American East) !!! LOL
  14. @yave1964 Just to put my 2-bits in, as I don't consider myself anywhere near your knowledge of the game, but I'm not so sure I can see this happening either with the Sens. I know in the past, the team relied heavily (overly so) on Alfie, which is no way to be a contender in this game, putting most of the load mainly on 1 person. It sounds like they've beefed up a lot now, but I think there will stil be growing pains, so to speak. Having star players or power players on a team may not necessarily result in a contender for the Cup, or even as a leader in their Division. There also needs to be chemistry & a "gelling" of sorts, everyone working 'together' as a well-oiled machine...not just 'individuals' that may put up good stats (I know it's a rough comparison, but see 'Blue Jays'...loads of quality, star players with great stats...no chemistry to produce a winning team). This all takes time, & Ottawa may or may not be able to work all the bugs out by the end of the season. May take 1-2 yrs more? Not sure. And this is not even putting into the equation yet that teams as seasoned as Pittsburgh & your Wings will not let them get to the top so easily. However, I could be totally wrong....
  15. Well, I'm amazed, he called Kovy. @yave1964, do you mind picking my lottery numbers for this week? (Great piece btw. Good to recall it for us 'newbies' here....lol)
  16. @Spider-Man NL Hey Parros looks pretty good in a Habs jersey LOL! http://video.canadiens.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=66&id=263367〈=en&navid=DL|MTL|home Good on the HAbs.....hopefully his brute will be an advantage over his PIMs...
  17. @hf101 Thanks hf....yah it's a bit confusing with the different articles...Puck Daddy states "90% of 875 Canadian families", but that Globe & Mail article states: My original take on this was that it was 90% of the chosen number of families that were surveyed, but not meaning 90% of all Canadian families (which sounds really scary).
  18. I thought this was an interesting article about these 2 players who both started their careers on the same day in the 1990 Draft. They are currently the only 2 remaining active players from that 1st round. There are also some neat stats from fellow players of that 1st round, some fizzling out, some going on to glory. Love the story behind Brodeur & the incredible foresight Lamoriello had in selecting him 20th overall, when he was overlooked by all those other GMs. There's also nostalgic footage of that 1990 draft & also one of Brodeur's coming of age which gives me chills watching the superstar bloom. Jagr was recently traded to Devils on a 1-yr, $2 mil contract. http://thehockeywriters.com/jagr-to-brodeur-gems-from-the-1990-entry-draft/
  19. @yave1964 Thanks for that yave! This is a really interesting case you make for him. Yah 43, geeze I thought Jagr was bad enough, I'm embarrassed for him when I watch him sometimes, like he needs a walker on the ice! Yah I was hoping to hear from Sabres' fans POV as well...
  20. So true...though I must admit, I don't watch a ton of CBC programming in the off-season, (yah I'm one of those Canadians!) but just to stand on principle & keep an all-Canadian content station. Like you say so well, HNIC is so ingrained into our lives since our childhood, & I would forever miss that HNIC theme song coming on before every game (btw- I actually still prefer the original 'old' theme song!)....that song is absolutely synonymous with hockey!! It takes on such a unique character of its own for hockey...something that TSN is lacking in that regard. Let's face it, CBC & in particular, HNIC, is symbolically a part of our culture as the Maple Leaf flag. Would be a heart-wrenching loss to so many.
  21. @yave1964 Nice explanations & comparison. Yes, I agree with stats like those, Andreychuk should be a contender for HOF...274 PPG's?? That's unbelievable. Funny also how their Assists are identical. I'm not versed on the criteria of eligibility for HOF, how is he left out? Not enuff Cups? Or is it also some political thing (like in Academy Awards..haha)?
  22. @Commander Clueless **AGREED/LIKE!** (Sorry Cmdr, for some reason when I try to click on Agree on some posts tonite, it doesn't work & hf101 can't figure why....so, have to do it the 'manual' way for now LOL!)......**I may have to start owing some people some 'likes'!**
  23. Awesome idea JR! Would love to hear & learn more about those past players that also deserve a ton of credit...would also love to hear more about goalies' performance from those times as well! Such a different era for the game....
  24. Absolutely true...I always wondered why Beane got so much credit & glory when his info/decision-making were based on Bill James' formulas & principles.
