1. I agree that they did somewhat of a rebuild but I don't like it and it hasn't worked. Thats why I want another rebuild and want someone else to try.
2. Chicago Chicago did keep 8 players but they did let a lot of key players walk including their goaltender. I guess it doesn't matter who you plug in as long as you have a core with a winning culture and a system that works. I'm willing to rebuild to find that core because it doesn't exist in Philadelphia. If you don't endorse Homer, why would you want to keep the players he placed on this team?Like I said, nobody is untouchable. I wouldnt be calling all the GMs and begging them to take Giroux but I'd be listening to anyone who is interested. Giroux isnt the leader to build my team around.
3. If you consider this team a rebuild, fot's fine but it doesn't mean we have to stick with this particular rebuild and keep doing the same thing over and over. Homer tried to rebuild and he failed with this group. Either you can trust him on his judgment and let this team gel, trust him to build a better team, or do what I want and hire a management team that will do things differently. There's not one person on this team that's untouchable...not one.re watching a rebuilding Flyers team. The team made the decision to gut the roster that went to the Cup Final and go with a set of young, unproven potential. Then they lost the 35+ player they were building that youth movement around. Four players remain from the Cup Final team of 2010. If that's not a "rebuilding" situation, I'm not sure what is. By way of contrasting example, the Pens have eight players from their last Cup and they also currently have the most points in the Conference. To say that a team has to be together for a few years to win might not be accurate. After the Hawks won the cup, they lost like 11 or 13 players, almost missed the playoffs in 2011/2012, and won the cup again in 2013. They were able to rebuild a year after the rebuild to win another cup.
4. I've never come close to making the NFL but I caught a football before...its not hard. I caught a ball between my knees once and thrusted it up to my hands all in stride. If I was fast, maybe I could have been something.Football players that drop balls that are right in their hands make me laugh.
5. I dont know much about football...I just don't see Foles being the real deal. He might be a starter but just an average starter. You can come back to this next year and shove it in my face but this is how I see it going down. The Kelly had other teams on their heals and nobody has a book on Foles. Of the highlights Ive seen, maybe 5 of those 20 TDs were because of Foles making a great pass. I also saw about 5 TDs that were severly underthrown and maraculously were caught. In the Oakland game, three of the TDs were from the defense falling down. They will make him their franchise QB and everyone will be excited but teams won't be underestimating him anymore and his luck is bound to change. I don't really put too much stock in ints...how many did Farve have? You have Ints if you take risks...Foles hasn't had to take risks but he will.Im happy for you Eagles fans. I'm just telling you what I see. I see Kelly making the most of what he has but that isn't enough to be a major player in the league yet.
6. Its obvious you know more than me about football. That's one of many reasons football is a joke sport. Track stars can be great receiver because it doesn't take too much skill to catch a ball. I'm not debating McCoy being a great RB. He seems to be shining more this season though. Isn't he the leading rusher in the league?Sorry...this wasnt meant to be a football debate.
7. I cant believe I am actually discussing football on a hockey forum...makes me sick to my stomach.Saying Desean Jackson is a talented player is like saying Eric Well wood is a talented player. Speed doesn't equal talent but it does make you better in football than it does in hockey. I always wondered why a guy like usain bolt wouldn't join the NFL as a receiver and make a boat load of cash. Do you know how many touchdowns he would have!McCoy is very good but how good was he under Andy Reid? He wasn't as strong and conditioned plus his offensive line wasn't as strong and conditioned. Also, the creative play calls open it up for him.It all goes back to off season workouts and being creative.
8. Trust me, I would take any chance I can to bash the Eagles and football in general for that matter. 8-5 isn't amazing but its good when you started 3-5 and you have an average QB and average receivers. They are now conditioned and used to the new innovative system. They might (hopefully) stumble in the end but at least eagles fans have something to look forward to. What do we have...2 stars and a bunch of 3rd and 4th liners with a boring bad defense bad offense system?
9. I wasn't thinking of this year...this year is lost in mediocraty. I'm talking about moving forward. The Eagles struggled early because they weren't conditioned yet and they had to learn a completely new system. In hockey, you won't be able to diagram every play but you can try new things that nobody has done before. I have an idea to replace pulling the goalie while down a goal or two but I'll save that for another day.I don't know for a fact but when I see tweets every day about being here or there and doing this or that but I never see a tweet about going to the gym, I assume there's not much working out going on. Its a shame the media for hockey is so lazy in this town...maybe we'd know more about their routines. Also, there's always that picture of some of the guys on a boat or at the beach. I don't want to brag but those guys aren't beating me in a flex-off. They're better conditioned now then they were in the beginning of the year though.
10. As far as league and NHLPA rules go, I don't think the team can have organized meetings and or workouts but the same goes for the NFL. You can however change the dynamic of your team by setting a standard for what is required homework in the off season, and if players don't buy in, we'll find players that will buy in to replace them. I dont even want to strive to do what previous cup winners have done. I dont care if we draft or trade. In my opinion, most NHLers are just about at the same talent level. The work ethic and system makes players better. I want an organization that wants to make those previous cup winners look like a team from the '70s.
11. What does everyone think of this? I hate the Eagles but they're doing it right. Why can't the flyers take some tips from the Eagles? The Eagles are a very average team that is benefitting from a superior system. Nick Foles is the Antii Raanta of the NFL, their defense is a bunch of no-names and their receivers never did anything special before. Yet, they get it done because Foles is throwing to wide open receivers and the other teams' receivers can't get open. What am I getting at here? Why are the Eagles having success? It's really simple if you think about it. Instead of following what successful coaches have done in the past, Kelly decided he is going to do it his way. He is creative and thinks outside the box no matter what everyone else thinks. Instead of trying to fatten up his players by eating 25000 calories in a day and bench pressing 750lbs, he hired a nutritionalist and sports science guy. Now they're drinking smoothies, doing proper conditioning, and getting sleep. Instead of taking 40 seconds to get the play in and snap the ball, they are looking at signs and everyone know what to do. The Eagles are flat out in better shape and wear out other teams. Why can't the flyers do the same thing? If Berube thought outside the box, this group of players could play better than any team in the NHL that is just trying to follow the template of how to build a team that was laid out before them. Instead of summering in sea isle and coming into camp in September, why can't they hire trainers to work out over the summer? Why can't they get on a specialized diet to make them faster and stronger? I make a small fraction of the amount of money they make and working out and dieting won't make me any more money or make me more successful. Yet, despite taking care of an infant child, I'm in the gym every morning at 5am. I eat well and drink a combo of spinach, carrots, cucumber, banana, pineapple, and berries in a smoothie every day. Instead of doing the same old plays every other team does (dump and chase, triangle, etc.) why not be creative? If a point man takes a shot, put one guy in front of the goalie and a guy to either side of the goalie. All three (or four) guys could jam at that puck until it squeezes through. I know it sounds stupid but do other teams know how to defend it? The Rangers do a thing where one guy stands at center ice while a winger skates as fast as he can up the walls. The defensman passes it to the guy at center who usually has the defense converging on him. All he needs to do is deflect it to the winger who is flying up the ice and he's gone past the defense. Rick Nash did that perfectly the other night. A creative coach could come up with a ton of new plays that will open things up. I guess it will stay a stupid dream though. We'll just hope to be as good as Pittsburgh and Chicago instead of wanting to be so much better.
12. A lot of these trades look bad now but I can't blame homer for make most of the trades. I thought Richards became a punk who wasn't really captain material. He went to LA where he didn't have to be captain and he blended into the middle of a solid team and has become a reliable player. We were getting a strong, gritty, tough player with some heart and skill plus the "top prospect" in the league at the time. Also, we were dumping a long, expensive contract.
I would have been happy with spectrum ice coasters to get rid of carter but we dumped his contract, picked up voracek (talented young potential) and we freed up money for a goalie. Carter also fit into a nice role in LA.
JVR for Schenn didn't bother me either. JVR was severely underperforming and we needed defense. Little did we know, JVR just needed a different coach and trainer to help his skating. Schenn became a stiff.
13. I don't think it's that time yet. I agree that he hasn't earned the "C" yet but taking it away from him won't do any good. There's not really anyone to give it to either. I like the idea of pronger helping out but he can't be expected to do that...would the team respect a guy who's not playing with them? Just sit him for a game or two to send a message.
14. There's definitely room for improvement on the defense but I can't torch them after they almost had two straight shutouts. I think we all expected giroux, voracek, and hartnel to each have at least 20 each right? That's basically a goal every 4 games. How different would their record be if each one scored just 1 goal every four games? They'd be .500 at least.
15. I thought the same think when I saw the replay. The goal was scored because Giroux didn't take his man who was driving to the net. It was clear that Giroux was clueless and in no-mans land on that play. He didn't play at all in the OT. The announcers thought it was strange that he wasn't out there but I'm hoping berube saw his laziness in that final minute and benched him. I think he deserves Thursday off at home too.
16. I think you're onto something there. We all fell in love with him because of what he did in the playoffs his first partial season when Richards and carter were here. Then he had a a decent season. Then Richards and carter left, he took on a bigger role, pronger goes down, and giroux becomes captain by default. Then it's the typical lul after a players signs a big deal. I'm not saying that I wouldn't have signed him, but he isn't living up to what we expected. Imagine if Crosby didn't have a point and was a -1 in three losses...we don't expect that to ever happen. Also, I've been blaming the defense but you should come out with at least one point if your defense only gives up 2 goals...especially when the other goalie is Khudobin. I'll give the defense an A if they can keep teams to 2 goals a game. I'll give the offense an F- if they average 1 goal a game. They have no plan or chemistry. They just go up and down the ice hoping that something will develop.
17. I disagree with a lot that was said here. About the PP, to say that it looked terrible isn't very accurate. They do need to score more than 1 of 7 but I thought they were moving the puck really well. They need to finish better. About Simmer not having a good attempt on the PS because he's not a sniper is not an excuse. I watched Chris Kelly of the bruin deke the goalie out of his pads last night. Simmer has to have more than a weak shot at the 5 hole.
18. Was Corey Crawford a huge FA signing for Chicago? What about Rask for Boston? What about Quick,Schneider, or Howard. None of these guys or some others were big signings. They had to prove themselves. How many of them won the Calder for Rookie of the Year. We have a guy that we're paying nothing and has the potential to be one of the best in the league. Get a young, promising backup and we're set for years to come.
19. I feel bad too and I usually root for the underdog but it's good Boston won. I think they match up better with the penguins if they should meet in the ECF. The rangers also match up better with the penguins than the capitals do. Both the rangers and bruins have offensive potential with solid defense and really good goaltending. As long as the pens are gone, i'm happy.
20. Simmer back in the lead! Let's knock this ugly f@$k out!
21. It looks like Malkin is up there at the top of popularity in this contest. I just can't stand him. Did anyone se what he did the other night? He kept putting his glove in Hamonic's face until Hamonic couldn't take it anymore and dropped the gloves. Kunits saw them square off, came flying over, held Hamonic down while Malkin whaled away at his body. What a f#$king coward!
22. http://covervote.nhl.com/#/ballotz I really don't care if he makes the cover for NHL 14 but he is up against Malkin right now and if Malkin is on the cover, I might throw up every time I put in the disc. For the love of god vote for simmonds just this one time!
23. I actually don't think he's that far off. They have a lot of good 3rd and 4th liners. Add one 1st or 2nd lime sniper, two defensman that can get the puck out of the zone, and put mason in there or make a move for bernier, and now we have a team. The flyers 3rd and 4th lines are better than most.
24. We all know how bad Bryz is...well at least everyone except for Bill Clemente, Steve Coates, and maybe Jim Jackson. On that first goal last night, all three said the puck was deflected and that Bryz was at no fault for that goal. In fact, on of them said "Bryz had no chance on that one...it was deflected". Really?!?!?! For the life of me, I couldn't see the deflection on any replay. If there was any deflection, it happened less than an inch from where the puck left Carter's stick. So in all actuality, Bryz saw the puck from where the shot was taken. The announcers are straight up lieing to us now. The reality is that the pass was made, Carter had a chance to settle the puck and take a good shot. Bryz was way too slow to get into good position. They also offered no critisism on the second goal even though it seemed like a weak shot that could have been stopped. I like Jim Jackson, Clement isn't as bad as I used to think, Coatsy has to go.
