Danny Briere: Flyers’ New GM Says ‘Rebuild,’ Welcomes the Challenge

Recommended Posts

As I first reported back in early January, the Flyers are exploring ways to move on from Kevin Hayes. If you listened to his media availability to end the season, Hayes seems to be aware of it.

As Friedman first reported a month ago and SanFilippo brought up last week on the Snow the Goalie podcast, a likely destination for Hayes is believed to be the Columbus Blue Jackets. Former GM Chuck Fletcher was engaged in trade discussions with the Jackets leading up to the deadline but kept the details of the negotiations quiet, I’m told.

Speaking to someone close to the situation on Monday, the Flyers feel that making Hayes a $5 million player is fair value for what he brings on the ice. I don’t get the sense that is nonnegotiable on their part, the person I spoke to seemed pretty firm on their belief of what they feel should be retained of Hayes’ $7.14 million AAV over the next three seasons.

The same person also told me that the Flyers will revisit trade discussions with Columbus between now and the NHL Draft centered around Hayes.

Hayes, 31, a career point season total with 54 over 81 games. He originally signed his seven-year, $50 million contract with the Flyers in June of 2019.

Does that writer believe one of the teams with a 1-6 pick wants Provorov? Or is he talking about a lower pick than the Flyers’ likely 7th? If it’s a top 6 great. Otherwise I’m not sure it’s a very good idea.

Provorov may not be everything I hoped he’d be by now but I think his best is yet to come. As the Flyers tighten up the roster we should see Provorov’s game tighten up too.

How about Dave Hakstol?? He had his best year under him.

Who knows how their season ends up but depends on the return before i am moving on from one of the best players on this roster.

Sure he has struggled since Niskanen's departure but it is deeper than that who would have some issues with this dysfunctional organization i say.

It's hard to believe the Flyers front office could never figure this out when it's plain as day.

Not that hard at all to believe. That front office is filled with tools, they just can't fix schidt

He will be a Flyer or he want i think so either way either earns a spot and kept or maybe even dealt some time this season.

I don't see teams with a shot at Bedard/Fantilli/Michkov or Carlsson trading for Provorov. That leaves the Habs and Yotes (barring another team moving up) and the Yotes just traded away Chychryn and Ghost for picks, so I think you can count them out.

His job isn't relevant in todays NHL. How many DesLauriers are there, combined, on the remaining playoff teams? None? Cause you need players who can play hockey...4 lines deep.

This is part of the reason the Flyers suck, cause the guys building the team have NO CLUE how the current NHL is played.

Sounds to me like you're discounting his impact during the season and how that can help maybe reach the playoffs and you know once there he doesn't have to play unless needed.

Sure i guess you don't have to have him to make the playoffs but i'm not going act like i'm not happy he is there to protect the players needing protected and even the ones who need motivation maybe during the week.

A guy like does have a place in the NHL and his contract and what they pay him is the least of their worries right now. But 6 goals form a enforcer that 10 minutes of ice time a night isn't too bad.

What they need to concentrate on is purging the Hayes and DeAngelos and step a step towards the rebuild come draft time. It is a 3 years away from being 3 years a way moment again...

His impact? We're picking 7th overall. He beat up a few guys....that won us what?

There's many guys that NEED to go before DesLauriers, sure. But he's far, far far away from a keeper on the Flyers as far as I'm concerned.

So you are putting the finish on a guy who plays 10 minutes a night? :hehe:

ya, that's what I said. It's ALL on DesLauriers...I've been preaching that all year, haven't I?

If he's not a keeper, then he should go. That's what I said.

That is what i am reading...all these players under achieving and we worried about a goon and what he makes.

I guess i'm done with this conversation nothing good is going to come from it. Later.

If the team is rebuilding, I don't see any need to retain a 32 year old goon who plays less than 10 minutes a night. He doesn't have to be the 1st guy traded, or 2nd or 3rd. But he certainly doesn't need to stay.

And yet he still has a job. Teams keep signing him. Im sure all us forum experts know more than all the Gm's in the league. That's why there are more of us then there are of them. And if they were all smarter they would probably be on this forum instead of deciding who ACTUALLY plays on their teams. But I think I will forgo my infinite hockey wisdom and extend them an ounce of courtesy that there is reason ND is employed.

My initial post, albeit honest, was a joke. However, as pointed out, ND is not the reason this team sucks. And he won't be the reason they keep sucking. Considering where they are as team, and where he is a player, I think he is useful and valuable. I know if I'm Morgan Frost, having a guy like Delauriers watching my back, would give me a boost of confidence

Like I said, why not keep him around for this rebuild? Its good to have a guy who's willing to punch someone in the face for no apparent reason

And it might not be.

Is Deslauriers "the reason" they are picking 7th?

No.

Is he "a reason" they will be better next year?

Probably not.

Doesn't "need" to go, doesn't "need" to stay.

Like anybody else over 27 if you can get something useful for them, seriously consider it.

He had a career year in PIMs this year.

Also played more games than in any season since 2014-15.

Chuck Fletcher signed him. Do I really need to run through all of Chucks acquisitions and remind you how each and every one of them sucked? Please say no.

I know it was. I agree he's not THE reason the team sucked. He's part and parcel of it, not his fault, he's just not very good, his "job" is a dying, if not dead asset in todays NHL. He was signed by a management team that still can't work a cap and "he big.....he hit" is more valuable than hockey smarts, skating and skill.

And if someone is going to run Morgan Frost...they're going to run him. Nobody has ever had someone lined up and went "Hmmm, better not, my goon might have to fight their goon over it". It's why good teams have moved on from it. And it's why Clarke, Homer and Fletcher had to have him. And Hayes. And Risto.
