Matthews signs 4x53 million to remain a Leaf

Recommended Posts

Coming in a bit shy of the long predicted 13.5 million AAV Matthews signed with the Leafs for 13.25 million AAV on a four year deal.

Love it for Matthews. With the cap almost certain to go up before his next deal, he may parlay the next deal into an eight year extension or go to market still close to prime. Kudos.

Don't hate it for Toronto. Yeah Allison they did was kick the can four years down the road rather than sign him to a max term deal, but it resolved the Matthews situation before camp. Nylander rumored to be good as gone but that is for another day.

They'll still probably get to finals in those 4 years then Matthews will go back home to America...good deal for Toronto because these 4 years are their window and Treliving getting it done like he always does👍👍

This guy's so dumb, he thinks an innuendo is an Italian suppository.

Nathan MacKinnon = 15.2% cap.

Evgeni Malkin's long term deal =14.7% of the cap.

Auston Matthews contract = 14.6% of the cap.

Sidney Crosby contract = 14.5% of the cap.

Out of the group of players whom that twit tweeted about, only Patrice Bergeron signed a bargain deal, at 10.69% of the salary cap.

Only McKinnon has won it all making that type of bread though.

Sid and Malkin weren't making that when they won it all.

IIRC.

I think he was eluding having to move Nylander now and maybe a little less maybe they could keep him.

But I am not familiar with their cap space.

Any ways now they have to get out the 2nd round before worrying about a Cup.

I can't see it.

IMHO if they dump Nylander and get picks back, yeah they are done. However if they trade him for a hanifin or pesce, someone who changes the dynamic of the back end they still might win. I am very skeptical of both Robertson and Knies but if either go for 20-30-50 it would go a long way. I still think they are capable but every year gets harder and harder.

I like the term. There's still a question mark about the defense and the goaltending (I think Woll is a very talented and gifted goaltender, but more in the mid-term future) but this team has so much talent that it should go for a deep run. But again, the unpredictable parameters: injuries, the shape of the puck, the ice temperature, the Toronto syndroma...

You're not recalling correctly, actually. Pittsburgh won the Cup in 2009, 2016 and 2017.

2009

Crosby cap hit% - 17.3%

Malkin was on his entry-level contract.

2016 & 2017

Crosby - 14.5%

Malkin - 14.8%

Meh....I hate the term, but respect the value.

Since his ELC, he has commited to The leafs x's 2, and they get him in his primes years, which is also adventageous for both the leafs and Matthews, but does this mean Nylander is gonna be shown the door ?

How can they afford to keep Matthews, Nylander, Marner and Tavares ?

Defense and Netminding still suspect....

I'm assuming they take it down to the waterfront, but how far up Yonge do you think they start?

East Gwillimbury?

There's so much to plan. Gotta start now just to be safe.

Depends on what they get back for him...even if they free up salary and get Lindholm Backlund or Hanifin from Calgary that'll be better team wise than keeping Nylander who doesn't add a defensive dimension like those Flames do...thinking more about it they could get Markstrom and Backlund for Nylander or Markstrom and Hanifin or Marstrom and Lindholm...

I think they can since they already heavy on offence and Nylander doesn't do anything that can't be replaced...

Thing is, up until last season K'Andre Miller would have been another "what pick was that, Ron?"

And no one talks about the two guys taken after O'Brien with 29p in 130gp and 6p in 39gp or the guy ahead of him with 19p in 89gp not to mention that total fool and moron who took Kaut (11p 56gp) at #16.

You might know him better as "Joe Sakic".

Do any of those guys get you a 2nd today?

Because O'Brien did 😃

Maybe Ron should have just given up the pick for ROR when they had that chance.

Who knows what may have happened but they didn't want to include it in a trade.

Or so they say.

But water under the bridge now.

We'll just want for JO to hoist the Cup for the Laffs.
