Good article/interview with Hextall

Thanks for the posting.  My biggest take-away is that he doesn't want to promote to big league's with fallback to demotion: They are brought up to stay because they're ready.  That may be a high threshold but it makes sense.

I'm of the same opinion as Hexy, if a player isn't ready, he's not ready. I'm thankful that there are wise hockey minds in the Flyers organization (now) to recognize that fact, Beyond that I'd like to think they have the foresight to help said player cope with the fact that he's not going to be with the "big boys", but that he can appreciate that he will be the big boy on the team he is returning to. At that point what he can do for the growth of his teammates and opponents benefits the league he's in and future picks. It's really a no brainer.

I like how Hexy said in another interview how he can straight out say Konecny is a helluva lot better player now then he would of been last year had he gone to the Flyers at the start of the season, and how he improved his game away from the puck. The game is too fast for prospects to be improving as players in the NHL, there's just so much going on that it's hard to take in and digest all that's coming to you and passing you by.

Ghost benefitted from a supporting cast and coach that told him to just go out and play his game, he was encapsulated and somewhat protected from being punished or reprimanded for every little mistake, and with that confidence and support from the team/coaching staff, he was able to grow and succeed knowing he had support and an organization behind him rooting for him. That wasn't possible for Morin when many wanted him to play right out of the draft when he was seen as a big mobile defensemen and was being whispered as a possible next Pronger. He still now realizes that he has to get stronger and faster in movement and decision making in the AHL, so it won't be possible for all our prospects to have Ghosts environment, so they have to develop in a traditional way for their betterment other wise we'll be like the Oilers talented first round picks that don't play the right way and don't know how to win.

What's nice is that once these guys make the team, we should still have another infusion of a wave of talented prospects coming up to complement our rookies after they've been in the NHL for two/three years already. That will be intreguing to see because by then we will already have fast, talented players who are being coached by coach Hakstol who has the talent and skill to work with young players.

Another nice thing Hextall did was fill enough roster spots for call ups so that a prospect won't be forced to play in the NHL, though I kinda wanted them to be showcased with a call up just to see how they do.

But to put it this way, it's like when you get two frozen fully cooked hamburger patty out the freezer and heat them up, you have the buns already toasted and you put the cheese too soon on the patty you want to eat already, you know the patty is a little cold in the middle but you already put the cheese on it so its starting to melt. You take the patty out and put it on the bun, you take a bite and the outside is hot but on the second bite its still cold, but not frozen, you know that patty would of been better off staying in the pan for one or two more minutes.

Don't eat cold patties let our burger boys cook for one or two more years, so they can do what they were picked to do. We need our picks to be put in a position to be successful. Here's hoping that Coots can push his  offensive game to the next level because had he had a chance to play in the AHL, and further learn to be a first line: center/Power Play forward to go along with his top minutes as a PK specialist, we would of had a 20/30+ consistent goal scorer by year two or three. He can still hit those numbers, but it's gonna be very hard to be more than a 20+ goal scorer now, but it's still possible, but is it probable? The odds have been made harder now by him entering the NHL sooner than he should have. Just like the patty you can try to throw it back in the pan, but now you might end up burning the cheese or competely being melted away where it's no longer visible or even tasted.

I hope Coots can still show us the cheddar. If he can be put in a more offensive position, I believe he's still got it on him if given the opportunity and support. For instance having Jake and Schenn play along him, it should be possible. At one time Read, Coots, Schenn on a line together were giving us the goal support we needed.

Here's to letting our picks fully be ready to enjoy and be successful for our organization.
