OR....Lets just make sure Martel isn't just another Straka before knocking the gms decision making. Two years ago you were complaining about him not being called up for his scoring prowess...he's playing for Pilzen these days.

Martel is doing great...but it's still a small sample.

Straka needed to work on his two way game play without the puck.

Martel plays solid defense feisty and physical despite his size. Straka was inconsistent along the boards.

Straka was a PP specialist where he got his goals. It's not like the Flyers have any of them.

Martel has only 4 PP of 13 on the PP. Only 2 of his 20 last year.  He is solid at 5 on 5 play. Flyers need more of that.

Even with all that Straka could score yet he didn't get a look and Flyers needed goals. We'll never know.

I guess Martel only has 4 helpers so he won't get a chance because the Flyers are a passing team no need for scorers.

If you can't pass the puck then you won't play. pass pass pass :hehe:

Great to see Hart back healthy and rounding into form after the bought with mono...

http://sonsofpenn.com/carter-hart-breakaway-saves-20-save-shutout-russia/

He showed why he is so highly touted during a 20-save shutout win against Russia. It was the first time Russia was shutout in the Super Series since 2012, when Laurent Brossoit accomplished the feat. But it wasn’t without a few tests.

The WHL pounded Russia, 7-0, but there were several moments early on where Hart had to come up big.

Less than two minutes into the game he had to come up with a big stop on Alexey Polodyan.

Hell i would love to be able to answer that but at this point all we can do is speculate.

He can't even get a cup of coffee right now.

I guess he doesn't pass enough and all he does is score goals.

He is the Flyers version of Chris Carter, not sure if you remember/know about the Buddy Ryan Eagles days when he said about Chris Carter before trading him to the Vikings "All he does is catch touchdowns!"

No i am in no way saying the undrafted free agent will be a hall of famer like Carter.

In fact i have no clue if he can do it at the next level.

All i'm saying is the Flyers need more scorers after being shutout twice in the last 9 games.

Maybe he can help.

And I don't give a rats ass if he is small Cam Atkinson is only 5-8 what if folks never gave him a shot because of his size.

Goals are goals. Let's see if he can do it.

They need wins now swap Read out for him i say.

@OccamsRazor

Agree with all you said.  Yeah I guess my question was more of a rhetorical question.  We don't know what he is capable of at the NHL level.  At 48, yes I remember Chris Carter.  Huge mistake IMO that the Eagles let him go.

Agree swap him out for Read now ......

I don't know how current or accurate this profile of him is on EP, but if Martel is still 161 lbs, that's terribly light even by today's standards. Sure there are a handful of players like Gaudreau in that weight class, but they are still the exception.

What's interesting is Martel's PIMs. He's plenty scrappy by the looks of it and this doesn't appear to have translated into prolonged periods of injury.

The other thing about Martel is he's more of a scorer than setup man. He must have some filthy mitts on him. You'd think he could be lethal on the PP.

The weight report is old. Martel is at 170 pounds now. He's solid, real solid. I hope he gets a call up. There's a guy on HFBoards who's going off about Martel and said that he won't make it to the Flyers because he's too small and that he can't play in the bottom six because he has to be a top six forward to be successful.

Honestly,  the Flyers have a potential Jonathan Marchessault on their hands. Personally, if I'm the coach, I'd put Martel on a line with Simmonds and Filppula, play Weal with Patrick and Konecny and then keep the fourth line in tact. Lehtera and Weise are the healthy scratches, Read gets sent back to Lehigh Valley. That would be in a perfect world, however, we know in Haktard's world, the grinders like Weise and Lehtera will always have a spot in the lineup because those are the types of players Haktard likes.

Yeah, not sure there's much of difference between Weal and Martel. I'm with you, hopefully he gets rewarded with a call up.

Flyers because he's too small

That is horseshit.

Brian Gionta 5-7

David Desharnais 5-7

Nathan Gerbe 5-5

Cam Atkinson 5-7

Mats Zuccarello 5-7

Rocco Grimaldi 5-6

Stephen Gionta 5-7

So if someone tells them they are too small and they listen to them it's on them. So it can be done.

Totally agree with you on that. Like I said, it was a specific poster on HFBoards going off about Martel. The poster has a fascination with everything size related and often quotes nothing but CORSI and advanced stats. Anyways, as mentioned, I think Martel is another Jonathan Marchessault and could pop 25 to 30 if he's given the opportunity. I'd have no problems if Martel is with Filppula or Patrick, just as long as someone can get him the puck.

As far as Martel goes, I'm sure he'll get his chance. Hex likely has a reason for not bringing him up. Maybe he doesn't want him languishing in the bottom six and doesn't see a fit for him in the top. Maybe he wants LHV to remain competitive for this season. That would go along with his culture of winning mentality. Maybe it's something else entirely.

He'll get his shot. It might be this year if a call up is needed, or he might just get a shot at camp next year. Hex seems to really like the camp route. My honest guess is he'll get a shot this year, especially if he keeps his current pace.

Morgan Frosts Soo Greyhounds came up against the top team in junior...Anthony Salinitris Sarnia Sting. The Hounds prevailed 4-3 in OT with both Flyer prospects scoring twice each. Check out the hand-eye on Frosts 2nd goal...he bats the puck out of the air twice.

Rubstov had 1 g 2 a as did Mathew Strome, and Ratcliffe had 2 g.

Nice thanks for sharing.

Ruby and Salinitri should join the Phantoms next year to add to an already stacked lineup next year.

Phantoms are really getting so deep there is almost no room for the Colin Mcdonald and Corban Knight type AHL lifers.

It is a good problem to have.

It is why this year is so big for the Martels and NAKs they have the competition breathing down their neck come next year.

Time to sink or swim.

Exciting times!

Frost with another goal and assist. 26 points in 20 games. Yet another incredibly talented center to add to the pipeline. Add in that Rubtsov has been moved back to center with Acadie-Bathusrt and the pipeline dynamic really changes. Gut feeling tells me that in there years time, we're going to see guys move around in the big club to accommodate the youth. I'm expecting the four centers to be Couturier, Patrick, Rubtsov and Vorobyov. I think we see Frost move to the left wing on the Patrick line and Laughton move to the left wing on the Vorobyov line. The depth is ridiculous now. Add in two additional first round picks and we're bursting at the seams. I'm wondering if they get more salary off the books if Hextall is going to swing for the fences in terms of a blockbuster trade.
