NHL Treading Dangerously with O'Ree and Black History Month Decals

I want politics OUT of pro sports...... I really do........ but pro sports keeps wanting to drag politics back in!  It's incredible. I can't even have my "pro sports bubble/safe space" to get away from the world of politics for 3 f_cking hours because the league is going to force feed it to me.

The NHL is putting special decals on the helmets/uniforms to honor O'Ree, who is apparently the first black NHL player, although nobody gives a sh_t who this guy is nor should they because we're going to STOP making things about race aren't we Gary Bettman? We're going to STOP trying to emphasize our differences with special days/months and racially-based decals aren't we Gary Bettman?

Of course not! The NHL is putting decals on for all of "Black History Month" and to celebrate Martin Luther King day.  Does the NHL realize half its fan base is Canadian and European? Do they realize nobody gives a flying F about Martin Luther King outside the United States of America?  And that we care even less about "Black History Month"?  Which month is White History Month by the way?  I can't seem to find it on my calendar.  Does it come after Asian History Month? I can't find that one either. As usual, special race-based privileges for one but not for all. It's why the US is so divided as a nation. Keep emphasizing the differences and they'll keep growing.

So here's the deal:    If the NHL is going to bring POLITICS into the game, then I won't be watching. For the entire month that the NHL puts up that decal/uniform patch, I'm tuning out.

A clear message needs to be sent.  I don't care what political cause it is or what ethnic group is being examined or praised.  I want politics OUT of pro sports forever.

Again, if we were having beers I'd tell you, maybe you want to keep this in your thought bubble.

You seem angry-about what?

honoring a pioneer?

Like it or not, this is the world we are living in. I would like to introduce you to the concept of radical acceptance.

It will help you to not feel as bad about things you can't control and thus not spread stupid ideas like what's quoted around.

It's purely a matter of principle for me. I want my pro sports leagues to contain 100% pro sports and 0% politics. As soon as they start interjecting politics into the game then the NHL becomes a political organization and not a pro sports league.

The game was perfectly fine when they played all 82 games without honoring anyone, without wearing pink jerseys for breast cancer month, or camo jerseys for the military, or whatever. I'm done with politics and sports. I don't care what group of people they're honoring or what the cause is..... don't do it during the game. I want them to leave the game alone. I tune in to watch hockey..... and hockey is all I should see.

Nobody liked it when Don Cherry went off on political rants during Coach's Corner, and the NHL shouldn't be doing it either.

My two cents as always.  :)

Let's back up right to the beginning:

1.) I had no idea who O'Ree is/was until www.nhl.com mentioned his name. I don't know when he played in the NHL, who he played for, what position he played, or how many points he scored.... and I honestly don't care.

2.) I'm not angry about anything (honest)... other than the slow, persistent, seepage of politics into professional sports. It's one thing to advertise for McDonalds. It's another thing to advertise for a political party, cause, or other agenda. When the league does it, it means that our money is going into that cause (whatever it is) and that's not right. What if you choose to support a different cause? What if you know someone dying of testicular cancer and you want to support THAT cause instead of breast cancer? What if you're asian and don't care about black history month? What if you're indian and want to see indian history month? Watching the game becomes an endorsement for various causes you may or may not agree with.

I think Morgan Freeman said it best when he said he didn't want a black history month. (Neither do I because it's racist.) Why can't we just celebrate history and accomplishments regardless of skin color? Why do we have keep labelling everything by skin color? The truth is, nobody cares about black history month other than a handful of black people. Everyone else just rolls their eyes and lets out a "sigh", as if to say "here we go with this BS again".

3.) I don't consider someone to be a pioneer for being the first person of a particular skin color to do something. To me it's not an accomplishment. Winning is an accomplishment. Achieving success is an accomplishment. Being the first black, white, or asian person to do something is a product of circumstance and timing. It makes someone a historical FOOTNOTE, and that's what O'Ree should be... a trivia question/footnote but nothing more.

I am terribly disappointed of the Bruins' decision to retire O'Gee's #22.

Jackie Robinson had a long and successful career in MLB.  Jackie Robinson was prevented from playing baseball sooner because blacks weren't allowed to play.

There was no white/black barrier to break in the NHL however.

O'Ree played ONE season and had 14 points.  He was a NOBODY.  It's an insult to Jackie Robinson to call O'Ree the Jackie Robinson of hockey.

I think it is best not to think to much on this subject these days.    I didn't know who O'ree was either, but now I do.   I'd be ok with them removing all jerseys from the rafters.   Glorify no one.

I didn't know who he was either and I regret knowing now that I know lol.  ;)

I think Oleg Petrov had more points. Let's dedicate a patch to Oleg Petrov!

Anyway, I said my peace on this topic.  Good evening!

Alas, you're not in danger, nor are the rest of us.

So you disagree with Morgan Freeman on this issue then?  Okay.

My point is that I agree with his stance on this issue. Every word he says in that 1 minute video is what the world needs to hear right now.

The difference between you and me is that you're willing to go along with the pandering that is currently going on whereas people like Morgan Freeman recognize that what you're doing to black people is the true racism. You're quite happy to keep black people in training wheels so they can never stand on their own. Every time they try to remove the training wheels you quickly rush over to put them back on.

The Wild, though, introduced an interesting concept by retiring a number (#1) that nobody wore in franchise history.

I guess if a franchise has no worthwhile accomplishments or track record of success, they can retire whatever numbers they want.  For fans of teams with some actual history, the retired number actually means something to the player, the fans, and the organization.  It's the highest honor a player can receive from their team.

There you go trying to overthink things again. Best to stop. Don't you have spreadsheets to update? Focus on the stuff you are good at.
