Wild Message Board Chronicles...

Recommended Posts

I decided it might be fun to talk about some of the good 'ol days of the Wild.com message boards.  What do you remember from that time?  Good, bad...hilarious?

Even though some of you remembers those bygone days...we should probably start by giving our Wild Message Board names if we're using something different now.

I was LemaireisGod.

My Top 5 Wild Message Board Memories were...

~ The epic clashes between Wild fans and Canucks fans, I am sure @DJ Ricky can recall more than a few of those threads and the barbs and memes traded back and forth.

~ Get togethers with members of the forum both at the game, at Reid's, Alary's, or for practices / scrimmages and other places.

~ The members we lost, due to illnesses.  We lost some good people over the years.

~ The hilarious memes made by OldTimeHockey and others.  The Garth Snow / Chris Simon trade one, still makes me laugh just thinking about it.

~ Matt McConnell's wife going on the boards to complain about the fact fans were teasing how her husband was calling the games.

Man, I miss those boards.. this place just doesn't hold a candle to the Atmosphere that was over there. Great Times!

The Avs fans piling in at the start of the playoffs any time the Wild faced them only to slowly die off when they realized the inevitable.

The battles with Canucks fans.. and Ducks fans.

The posters from Finland that would come in and shame us for knocking holes in any Finnish players game at any time even if it was obviously something they needed to improve on.

All of the college and high school hockey talk.

The hilarious photo edits and homemade memes lol

The odd obsession with the blonde gal behind the bench at the X. 😂 I never really got that one having seen her multiple times in person but it is what it is and the legend will live on.

I don't think any forum can or will beat the game day threads from back then. They were fantastic and lively over there for years.

Mostly.. I miss the collection of degenerates of all ages that made up the forum for years bickering and celebrating with each other. It really was something special and it's still a bummer it's gone. A lot of people got lost in the shuffle and I hope they're all doing well.

Yes, the 40-something-year old blonde!  She was such a fixture and now...it seems to be a mix of fans.  She never seemed to cheer much, but she certainly seemed to be focused watching the game.

In that same realm, remember the discussion about Crazy Amy and Filip Kuba obsessed fan?  Hahahaha.

I would agree with you about the atmosphere of that place versus the old boards.  But a lot of that was generated by the pure volume of activity going on there.  It seemed like there were 30-40 lurking all of the time.  But that was when the message boards didn't have to compete against Twitter.  It was the one place you'd go to to talk, collaborate, plan, etc.

A collection of degenerates is pretty apt description.  The intensity of those threads were incredible at times.  But lots of hilarious characters indeed.

That was AvsJen right? Anyways yeah those times were great. Also I remember the guy from way up north like the iron range area who was just being annoying and posting a very seizure inducing Goal Light gif constantly.  I remember lost ones like PnltyBoxBabe and others who are still around just haven't been here much, Rotty, Mega, and Mom can't remember her screen name and I don't think she's made it here either but I hope you and your three boys are doing well. Our consistent what's for dinner chats and Broken appliances giving us "luck" etc etc, All in all just great times.

I was, I was LemaireisGod there too.  In fact, it was at Metroboards and also Fanhome if anyone remembers that place.  It was at Metroboards that someone contacted me about blogging for them.  Who knew, 17 years later I'm still doing it.

AvsJen was who?  The 40-something blonde?  Crazy Amy?

Yes I think I remember that guy.  @MNSOTAwould probably remember that better since it would've been on the gameday threads and I didn't spend as much time there as she did.

I do remember PnltyBoxBabe.  I just found another Wild.com message boarder on Twitter, Wildark45, I told him about this place and I hope he joins and tosses in some of his own memories to this thread.

I also remember the non-Wild related parts of the boards, where people talked about job / career struggles, wishing people happy birthday or ranting about whatever.  Yes indeed, great times more often than not!

The person who contacted you was probably me, was known as "alex primakoff" back then, later changed my user name to happy gilmore...lol.

I do remember Alex Primakoff.  You got that name from the commercial; I can't even remember what its for...maybe Southwest Airlines?

I don't think you recommended me to blog.  I do remember doing either a fantasy hockey league with that group and some NHL draft-based discussions.  Metroboards was a pretty good place.

I had completely forgotten about crazy amy! all of these memories flooding back reading this are great nostalgia lol

I also remember my inbox being full of non stop message requests to get in touch(I'm talking THOUSANDS of messages) with Tom Saterdalen from a guy that wrote a  blog(100% wasn't LiG lol). I let it slip that he's my relative on mom's side in a post and we had a guy constantly trying to get me to get him in touch or get him his contact info even though I stated multiple times I never really spoke to Tom outside of large family reunions or a quick hello at hockey tourneys around the cities growing up before I moved to Btown.😂

LiG.. do you remember people coming into the boards and calling those of us that often posted there "The Message Board Mafia" or something of the like? Someone would post a well thought out post with facts and info backing stuff up and as soon as another member would say anything that agreed with them and disagreed with another point "OMG MESSAGE BOARD MAFIA BACK AT IT" lol

Edit: I 100% remember that seizure goal light in the game day threads lol and I wanna say it was someone from another country that was posting it but I can't put my finger on the name. I could be wrong lol.

I never had someone hound me for contact information on a coach.  Sheesh, and I didn't know Tom Saterdalen was your relative.  Talk about a high school coaching legend...he certainly deserves that and to be honest I've heard nothing but good things about that guy.

Anywho...

Yea, the Wild Message Board Mafia, the made up creation by people who hated a group of posters because they didn't like their takes on the team.  Disagreement was considered an 'attack' by the mafia.  Yea, anyone who agreed with the mafia was a minion.

One would think if we had such a group we would have some kind of organized agenda.  i think all we did was drive away some fragile homers (because we disagreed with them at some point) and exposed frauds (i.e. people that claimed to be members of the police or military or former professional hockey players).  The 'mafia' was a cop out for blaming us for just about anything from the team's play on the ice to the activity on the boards, etc.

Although I do remember joining HFBoards, and there was like a member introduction thread and I remember laughing at reading people talk about the Wild Board Mafia over there.  Unfortunately, the mods over there were the same fragile people who left and so if you said just about anything at HFBoards you'd get a 1-month or 2-month ban.  I think I got a 1-month ban for saying Zack Phillips was going to be a bust.

And..he was.

I never really ventured outside of the old boards until they forced us to leave and now I'm here on occasion when life slows down a bit lol so I didn't get to see all that on HFBoards at all! I would have gotten a kick out of it for sure!

I actually remember you pointing out Zack Phillips skating issues well before the Wild drafted him in one of your pre-draft prospect write ups. Then, the Wild took him and most of us let out a collective groan realizing we just gave away Burns for basically Charlie Coyle and "Beer Time" Setoguchi.. You were spot on with that one and I don't know how anyone watching the kid play couldn't see the skating issues with their own eyes!

Burns is still my favorite player to ever play for the Wild and I'm still upset atbout that trade and lack of return all these years later. 😂

Yea, I still remember being at the draft with Bruce @KISSArmyMan, and after the Burns deal we talked about who they should take with a second 1st round pick.  I feared they'd take Phillips because he had a lot of points, but he played on a loaded St. John's team with Jonathan Huberdeau and Charlie Coyle.  We were hoping for Saad or some other scoring winger.  Instead we take Phillips.  I remember leaving the draft with Bruce and @MNSOTAand going to Great Waters Brew Pub to drown our sorrows with a few beers and some food while the 'new' Winnipeg Jets fans were being all kinds of obnoxious.

Right now, the only thing 'left' the Wild have from that trade of Burns is a 3rd round pick in this year's draft.

I will say this, there is a group that has had a message board Yahoo! fantasy hockey league that has been going on for like at least 13 years.  AngelinaE, Pete, HawgWild, Evil Empire and others were a part of it.  Even though the message boards are gone, the league has kept going...and its still called the Wild Message Board League.  Actually, 3 of those people I just mentioned are in that picture I posted above.

We used to get together for Wild games, back when they all had season tickets.  They called it 'Club 216' because that's where we'd meet between periods.  The usher in the photo, SteveAndFlipper was Wild Message boarder who decided to make some extra $$$ in retirement and this way he got to go to games too.  Super nice guy.

Yea, the passion of the board members was pretty incredible.

Luckily I wasn't a part of that posse. 😉

But yeah, sometimes the homerism was bad, especially the Koivu fandom.

Nevertheless, finns weren't the only fans suffering from rampant homerism. 😂 Oh, the good ol' days.

Was Steve was the nice guy with the dog(although I believe the dog eventually passed sadly)? I remember him too if so! I never made it to any of those meet-ups being so far north.. I wasn't at so many games just a couple/few per season when I could get time off work and schedule it in! The pictures everyone would post from them always made it look like you guys had a great time!

Yeah, I probably could have worded that better! it def wasn't ALL of the Finnish posters! and we definitely had some obnoxious homers of our own you guys had to deal with as well! lol good times! 😂

edit: The "what's for lunch?" thread or whatever it was is something I just remembered.. it was always a good read and always made me hungry reading it.

Yes, I'm pretty sure Steve told us that Flipper had passed away.  I always kind of look for him whenever I manage to get to a game; my guess is he's not ushering anymore but who knows.  Heck, that picture is from about 10 years ago yet I can remember being around those people like it was yesterday.

PtoJoneser (Pete) and Angelina and another poster named MNSlappy met up with MNSOTA and I when we won Wild Fan Hotline contest for a trip down to Laughlin, NV.  Like good Wild fans, we placed bets on the team.  That was the year of their lone Northwest Division title only to lose to Colorado in the 1st round of the playoffs.

Man...the stories @MNSOTAI could share from the Laughlin trip.  Even though the casino left a lot to be desired, being around the others made for a really fun time.  We laughed a lot that weekend.

I never participated too often (if at all) in the What's for Lunch thread, because most of the time...especially during the school year I rarely, if ever, have lunch.  So I didn't check out the thread much because it would only remind me I had nothing for lunch.  It was Instagram before Instagram!

I remember when we had this one Switzerland-based fan that tried to tell us that Petteri Nummelin was skilled like Bobby Orr.  When we laughed at the preposterous statement, the guy went crazy and it turned into this massive 20-page thread where we were bringing up every nasty thing in each other nation's history.  The guy said he'd never leave the boards.  I can't tell how many times people who got angry with me would say how they're never going to leave.  And every time...I'd just laugh and say I know you will.  And sure enough...they all did.

I think the Swiss fan left just a few days after his big declaration.  Life on the boards...always something fun to talk about!

I have always had a good time when I used to play in casinos but you are right they often dissapoint. That's why I started betting online and recently I have been getting great results because I take advantage of the reviews provided by this website and I also look for the best bonuses so I don't have to invest that much of my own money.

To be honest, I am not a big gambler.  Neither was any of us.  But we wanted to bet on the Wild because we kind of felt it was appropriate since they and the casino was flipping the bill for us to be there.  But the Sportsbooks all kind of just laughed at us.  Our idea was to bet and watch the game at the sportsbook, but they wouldn't even put it on TV.

I still remember after asking why they wouldn't show the Wild game, they said, "hey, its a desert, we don't watch hockey here!  We're showing the Flyers / Devils game and that's it."

Obviously that seems more odd considering Vegas.  I doubt Vegas would've treated us the way they did down in Laughlin.

Who remembers when the Wild were auditioning anthem singers (this was when Mike Schmidt was the preferred singer)?  There was some country-pop female singer who thought she was the s#!t. Well the people on the old forums weren’t having it, and wanted Mike to get the gig full time. After us critiquing her, both she AND her dad started posting. The best was when she claimed that none of us knew anything about music and/or performing. Yeah, because no sports fans could possibly know anything about music. Well let’s just say, yours truly shot that down real quick. She had no come back for someone who had been taking private music lessons since she was 3.5 years old and had the B. Mus. degree to back it up.

Man, what was that singer’s name?

I will admit after Schmidt, the only guy that I remember in regards to anthem singing at the X was James Bohn.  Bohn was great and its a shame the team kind of pushed him out.  Dicosmaker is ok; but I do remember the board rant about that and how the critique got far more technical than someone just saying they they didn't like their style.

Anyone remember the satirical threads where we'd take a Wild event and then create our own sort of vision of how it all played out with dialogue.  Or of course OldTimeHockey's fantastic Garth Snow / Doug Risebrough phone call Gif file that tried to explain how bad cell phone connection led to us trading for Chris Simon?  Honestly, that thing was a masterpiece.

Oh ****, memories are coming slowly at the surface. I was like "cool, there's another swiss guy here". I remember posting that Nummelin had actually a good shoot-out percentage (like 50% or so) but that was all about it. Dominant in the swiss league (where he came back after his stint in Minny) but too short for the NHL. Too bad we don't have any archive of this, I'm so eager to know what was exactly the nasty thnigs about each nation's history 😄

I also remember about the Sixfootten poster. He used massively the urban dictionary, writing pieces of poetry like "Leipold, U bytchwipe", "numbnutz", "whorebotz" and other things of that kinda type.
