Bryzgalov leaves KHL team - Reasons unclear....

Yeah, I guess that's my point - we will ALWAYS remember Flyers "backbreakers" over anyone else's.

It's not like anyone was terribly concerned with Bryzgalov's "backbreakers" in Phoenix or Anaheim.

Consistency is the best that I can hope for from a goalie. As we all know, if you get consistent backstopping it can change a lot of things in front.

Bryzgalov has been horribly - HORRIBLY - inconsistent (but has shown in previous seasons he can be more consistent).

That said, I DON'T want them to keep Bryz...

Do you really think they'll admit their mistake and basically throw away $60M?? I mean, I really really want to see him gone too, but that's a pretty drastic move.

Do you think he's tradeable? If they can get him to waive his NMC, I think he is. The Flyers will not get value, but that's the price you pay for dishing out stupid contracts.

Leighton's takes the cake though...

As ugly as Kane's Cup-winner was Sharp's goal (to tie the game at 2) was the real back-breaker.

Over the years there are so many absurdities surrounding Flyers' goaltending ... but bringing back Leighton may top the list...

If Bryz looks "the same" as last year, yes I think they buy him out. $60M is a drop in the bucket for Comcast-Spectacor. This was a team with a $70M payroll before the last lockout. This is a team that was about to pay $68M in signing bonuses to Shea Weber. They have money to burn, a box of quick start matches and a big can of kerosene.

I can see Bryz agreeing to a trade over a buyout, but it would be very restrictive and on his timeline and approval.

can't find the link where I read it but I'm sure I read something like $22.8 million would be the cost of buying out Bryzgalov...

edit: here it is

Bryzgalov will play the shortened season knowing he is basically “auditioning” to stay with the club and avoid being bought out. His annual cap hit is $5.66 million, meaning his two-thirds buyout would cost the Flyers almost $23 million.

I've been seeing reports about cap hits reverting to the team that originally signed him.

So, for example, if we traded Bryz away, his cap hit would be on the new team. But, if he were to retire before his contract ends, the cap hit would revert to the Flyers until the expiration of the original contract.

But, that was about 10 days ago, so maybe that's been dropped.

I think that was dropped. And it was, quite frankly, a stupid idea to begin with...

Imagine, for example: the Caps signed Ovechkin to that deal. The owner fires the GM, trades Ovechkin to another team and sells the franchise. Ovechkin decides he doesn't want to play in Edmonton (for example) and "retires" to go back to Russia. The Caps are now on the hook for a contract that the current regime had absolutely nothing to do with.

The League HAD an opportunity to impose penalties on teams making these ridiculous deals - they could have rejected them for noncompliance. They missed it.

Worse than that, they let NJ decide when they will lose their first round pick (Kovalchuk deal). It would have been nice if they lost the pick that got them Adam Larsson, like it should have.

Addressing the reason for this thread...it appears we now know just why Bryz left Russia....from today's Metzler's blog..

" * The official reason for Ilya Bryzgalov leaving CSKA Moscow a little early prior to the end of the lockout was that he needed to see a U.S.-based specialist regarding an upper-body injury. I have no idea if that was legit or simply a convenient reason for a parting of ways, so I'm listing it here. However, I suspect that he's fine and just wanted to get back to North America after a largely frustrating stint with CSKA. He actually played fine in each of his last four starts, including the one against SKA St. Petersburg in which he was said to have aggravated an injury."

I don't like this one bit. If Bryz is just ok, then gets hurt, it will still be in question whether he should be bought out. Upper body injury.....pffffft.

The only way he can weasel out of the buy out is an injury.....good Lord!

The Flyers docs are notoriously awful, they'll clear him with an arm missing. Not worried about it one bit.
