Metzler takes a wonderful walk down memory lane...

Just loved the latest installment of Bill Metzler's blog. The stories of years gone by, when the Flyers were more of a family and hung out at their faithful haunt Rexy's. Love the story of Ashbee lighting the Cowboy's beard on fire!!  It's not the present day Flyers fault that this kind of in masse hang out is no longer used, it's just a sign of the times. Many players are not drafted by the Flyers and are hired guns, mercenaries that follow the paycheque. Would love to go to Rexy's....to hang out where they used to...sounds like a wonderful place.

What a great article! It really brings back some old memories; some happy, some not so much. I never knew Kaminski's was a Flyers' hang-out. I spent a few nights there myself--a few years before the Flyers discovered it by the sound of things. If I'd have known, I'd have hung around a while longer.

I often think about these old stories of the amazing camaraderie the Bullies shared and wonder if that's part of what's been missing of late. Hey, what say we encourage all the guys to start hanging out at the Center City Tavern?

Like I said, it's a sign of the times, the players no longer hanging out in masse. Players are being pulled at from every which way these days. Those days at Rexy's, there was no cell phones, no internet, no tweeting or facebooking...if the loved ones wanted to get ahold of you, they had to wait till you got home. Now, it's instant messaging etc, etc...PLUS, the roster turnover was no where near what it is today. There was more of a "family" feeling to the team. Now, it's players selling out for the biggest bucks they can get, not the same type of loyalty that players used to show teams.

@doom88  In the seventies era, drinking was a way of life, it was widely accepted as something teammates do. It's not Mike or Jeff's problem per say, it was just a sign of the times. Who knows how much they partied, or if it even affected their play. Seems to me, players back in the day didn't let the booze affect their on ice perforamance....they were real men who didn't ***** out the next day.

What performance back then?  Goalies stood up.  I assure you, drinking is part of *every* era.

My point was more towards:

@doom88  I was just pointing out, things are more scientific today. Things like what you eat, put into your body are far more important today then back in the seventies era. Things like how much you sleep, when and what you eat are part and parcel of the modern NHL. Players are under the microscope much more these days, so it's a lot harder to be a partier. We used to hear rumors of drinking problems, now we have pictures like the ones you posted, removing all doubt.

It seemed like you meant stuff like that the players don't hang out with each other anymore, and wished they did.

Sure, I 100% agree it's harder to be a pro now, with nutrition, conditioning, and a truly world class field of competition.

It's harder to be a pro now....but they're also paid way way way better. The additional money they are paid more than makes up for the workouts they have to endure.

It was easier to play hungover back in the day, cause the guy you were playing against was hungover. And the other part about cellphones, other than getting called home, is if you're a celebrity of any sort and you're out partying in public, your photo or a video of it is going on the internet.

Looking back, it does appear I was making a point about the lack of hanging out. Got a bit derailed....lol.

absolutely. At the time of the first big expansion that brought the Flyers into the NHL many players had summer jobs, not even hockey-related but just regular, working-stiff day jobs.

On a related note it was good to hear Berube/Hextall talk about the "disgrace" (my word) of last season's early slump due to poor conditioning. I bet that more than anything else got Hartnell traded. Sounds like the message has been sent loud and clear - guys better come into camp ready to compete.

It *is* a disgrace for multi-million dollar athletes to show up for their jobs out of shape and lacking cardio....what a travesty. I would sit anyone who does not show up in tip top condition. These guys have their whole lives to sit around and get fat...for the 12 or so years they play....their bodies are owned by the teams that employ them.

pretty much. I don't mind cutting guys some slack if they want to party and enjoy life. What the hell is the point of earning millions if you can't enjoy it after work? But it's not asking too much for players to be ready to compete by September. All of them have year-round access to dieticians, physical trainers, specialists of every stripe at their beck and call...there's no excuse for wasting the off-season.

@canoli  I agree, they are young millionaires, they should party their faces off and bang everything that moves. Just don't overdue it and go past the point of no return cardio wise etc. Take an entire month and get it out of your system. If you wanna do an 8 ball do it....just don't get caught, be smart.

If you're doing it right, it'll help cardio...zing!

Just for the record, here, Lindbergh was coming back from a "team party"...

The sword cuts both ways.

It is a different era - most Bullies say that if everyone had a camera on their phone in the 1970s they would have played it differently.

And the point that multi millionaires interact differently is a salient one, no matter how new the money.
