Thanks for your topic  and yes, you will find quality hockey conversation here, and often some humor as well.

What is your reasoning why the Coyotes would pass on Strome?  I also see the Leafs choosing d-man Hanifin or Provorov.

I'm also not entirely sold that the Flyers will pick a D-man with the first pick,  I have them picking Rantenen,  but then again if they choose the best available Provorov might be the right pick.

HF101,

Essentially my reasoning for having Strome drop to the Coyotes is two-fold. First, I have a hard time insuating that Dylan Strome was able to create much offence without the presence of McDavid forcing other Ontario Hockey League top defenceman to entirely gameplan towards McDavid thus leaving Dylan Strome the opportunity to weave freeingly. Secondly, in relation to the Coyotes pick, from purely a team need perspective, Marner fits into the mold better then Strome for no other reason than due to the built in chemistry he has developed with Max Domi. Also, unlike Strome I don't have any glaring skating concerns.

I think the Toronto Maple Leafs are in aching need of a playmaker over a Provorov or Hanifin. On a personal basis, I don't see Strome as that playmaker but I can't imagine the Leafs would pass on Strome given  his inevitable availability.I'm very high on Hanifin, arguably the third best prospect in the draft, but circumstance may dictate that he slides to the Hurricanes at five which will be an absolute coup.

A comment on Provorov, excellent skater with above average hockey IQ, but questions remain with me to whether or not he possesses top flight compete level

Again good post.  Sure there is some Chemistry with Marner, but playing against the other big centers in the Pacific division I think the choice of Marner still might fall a bit short.  If Hanifin goes #3 to the Yotes then surely I see tvery excited  Leaf fans with Strome.

I forgot to mention earlier, I like the choice of Timo Meier for the Wild.   :)

@Regina_Hockey  Welcome to the board!  I never really contemplated the built in chemistry that Marner would have with Domi, while I don't see it as a sole reason to make Mitch the pick there, it certainly cannot hurt. The thought of Mitch over Strome due to skating concerns, I agree with that. While I don't think Stome will be slow at the next level, he will not be elite fast like Marner will be....and in this day and age, geez, just look at Kane and Johnson skating the opposition to death in these playoffs as living breathing proof. It is a legit train of thought, so kudos for that.

 From a Flyers perspective, If Marner and Strome are gone (and if they are not gone, more than one GM screwed up real bad)....I see them going Crouse before a d-man....and if it's a d-man...I think Werenski is the best d-man in this draft, although I doubt any GM shares that opinion.

 A bit nit-picky, but I think Carlo is a bit to late in the first round....a 6'5 d-man (might be 6'6 when it's all said and done) that can skate like the wind and has a legit mean streak...he should be in the 13-20ish range....but I've been wrong before. I think his offensive upside is suspect, but regardless, he has a lot of tools GM's covet.

Nice to see another list that rates Marner higher than Strome as I do :)

Here's to hoping this list plays out. Passing on Hanifin would be hard. He looks like the next Drew Doughty. Arizona might drool at the idea of him playing along with OEL. For that matter, Toronto may decide to build from Defense out before moving to forward since defense traditionally takes longer to develop. But I agree, both teams are dying for that #1 center they need.

Carolina is so shallow in their forward prospects too, while relatively deep on defense, but I can't see them passing on Hanifin. I would trade the moon for that pick.

Columbus is a bit more of a maybe to pass Werenski. I pray they do because I WANT him drafted to the Sharks like nobody else in his range. But all season, we hear they are in the market for a Dman. At Forward, they are set for awhile. 23 year old Johansson, 27 year old Foligno, 25 year old Cam Atkinson being their top 3, with 28 year old Dubinsky, 32 year old Hartnell still effective, 27 year old Anisimov missed some games this season, but is a decent top 6.

I just dunno.....

I am high on Werenski because it is what the sharks need an right around their pick projection. I see him and Provorov as near equal, but slightly behind Hanifin.

But the Flyers did hint they may draft forward.

They are nutjobs. Crouse ahead of Hanifin, Marner is insanity. Werenski 11th? I wish!

@hf101

@jammer2

For all the times I agree with you, this time I believe the Flyers go Provorov if he is available.  It would make all the more sense since the Flyers just signed Medvedev.  i have nothing against Crouse and he certainly would look good in O&B.  Provorov, according to most, has all the skills that is required at the NHL level.  It appears he is also most ready to be in the NHL.

No offense @hf101, but I just have some concerns if the Flyers go after Rantanen.  I agre with jammer though, if Marner and/or Strome are still available then you draft either one of them.  That is grounds for a GM getting the axe.

I still believe that as everyone agrees upon that the top 3 or 4 is McDavid / Eichel / Strome / Hanifin.

I can't believe ISS final ranking has Marner at #6.  Personally I think Carolina / NJ / Toronto is a crap shoot.  They could go in a variety of directions.  Regardless, the Flyers are going to get a very very good player.

My personal wish list is: (based on who might be available at #7)

  1. Provorov
  2. Crouse
  3. Werenski
  4. Barzal

Note: if Strome / Marner  are still available they trump all the above.

  • 2 weeks later...

With Arizona, Toronto, Carolina and New Jersey all having stated that "they were open to trading their first pick", you have to wonder what percentage is just gamesmanship..... trying to feel each other out and find out who is going which way.

If T.O really wants Strome do they need to move up??? Will Arizona go for a Dman??? Or Marner? Or Crouse? who really knows....

I see so many drafts where Zona skips Strome but I wonder how many of those mock ups are written by Leaf fans to start with   :)

Really...we dont even know who T.O will be picking...we are all just guessing like the TV reporters are.
