If there's another show that drops, then I'll re-evaluate.

As of now, there isn't one.  So, I am reacting to what we know.

I do not want to get into the usual pros/cons on Coots...too much on that topic in these parts.  But I think the four horsemen you identified wouldn't be so bad...upgrade over current set.  Coots defensive prowess may mean less if we have a serious defense.

Schenn was one of the few who would actually throw his weight around

Seriously? The guy is soft.... Throw his weight around you say, I never once seen him go hard to the net. No always off in the corner waiting for a infamous one timer that never went in... Soft as an ice cream in a freaking hot summer day in Florida, Mr. Brayden Flim Flam Schenn.

I never said that, but for 5 mil a year I mean come on dude....

For $4.7m per year 7 total goals.

I mean come on dude.

I'm repeat: I am by no means a Schenn defender (though I believe you are not a fan of his, correct me if I am wrong).  My criticism in this thread isn't necessarily in defense of Schenn, but a criticism of Hextall.

What criticism though I just do not under stand, the guy just got us two 1st round draft picks plus a player who probably will fit tter on this team than Schenn ever did. You are not a Schenn defender.....?...................coulda fooled me.

Yes I can't stand Schenn not a fan at all.

Never once went hard to the net?  Never?  Not once?  Ever?  Ok...

I know you don't like Schenn.  Not worth trying to change your mind otherwise.

Btw, Blues fans love this.  Simply because they got rid of Lehtera.

Tells you all you need to know.

I hope I am wrong, but this is pathetic.

Someone please tell me the rationale?

And we are rebuilding and got 2 1st round picks for a guy that wasn't going to part of this core anyways by the time we are contenders.

I know you do not like building a winning team. Not worth trying to change your mind otherwise either.

Gave up on a 25 year old player.  For late first round picks who may never play in the NHL, let alone produce at Schenn's level.

But, hey, maybe they will crack the lineup in 2021.  I'll be patient.  Hope Hextall still has a job then...

If the Flyers are just becoming contenders then, this team is in big trouble.

In general, I agree. There was times that he forechecked efficiently and threw some weight around, but it was few and far between. I think a team will always get hurt putting a B.Schenn type in the top 6, the other team will put out faster and more tenacious players and create mismatches in the process. In my opinion, he was not part of a championship core, so he had to go, AS LONG as they got good return, which it appears they did, but we won't know for sure till 3 years or so.

What if they plan to trade Couturier too? G, Patrick, Lehtera, Laughton down the middle.

Strange trade on the surface.

There almost has to be some truth to that. Then, this trade might make more sense, but honestly...as much he has regressed, I would rather have Coots. Not the contract, just the player.

People have been bitching about this team for years to do a proper rebuild. Hextall is in the middle of doing that, yet people still bitch about what he's trying to do.

2 1st for Schenn is good value.

They are...Lehtera is not, unless (cue broken record), there's another trade in the works.

Who is better?

ha.

Maybe there is something else here that we aren't thinking about.  Maybe Lehtera and Flippula play well together?

but my guess here is the Blues asked Hextall what would it take to get B. Schenn and Hextall stated what he wanted 2 first round picks and the Blues countered with you have to take Lehtera too.

That is the main part, whatever line he was put on the line could not meld, or create any chemistry, and declined in production.

You already said you're giving up on this team. What patience you have...

Probably that's how it went down.

Honestly, some of my frustration would be blunted if the pick didn't seem off-board to me.

I just don't see a need to make this trade.

Other pick is top 10 protected and it's pretty certain the Blues won't be picking in the top 10.

Help me understand this criticism.  If the blues get a top 10 pick then we do NOT get a pick in 2018.  So isn't it a good thing that the Blues won't be picking in the top 10?  Doesn't that preserve the 2018 pick for us?

By my score, we trade

- a power play specialist who occasionally throws a big hit, but who otherwise does not impact the game

for:

-A defensive forward

-slightly more cap space for 2yrs + losing schenn's cap hit in yr 3

- 2017 late first rounder that we used on Frost (going off the board)

-2018 first rounder falling between picks 11-30

What am I getting wrong?

Just playing devil's advocate here, but we paid Schenn more money to score 12 even strength goals. 17 of his 25 goals on the man advantage, having Ghost and G passing you the puck. Plus, it was slight, but he regressed from 26 goals to 25 despite being at the age when kids usually explode for career years. With Schenn, it's what you see is what you get, I don't see a ton of upside here. He does NOT crash the net, he does not out think other players....where do the goals come from, not that one timer which is a failure. If you are not fast, I want you no where near the top 6.

He's a playmaker who takes a lot of nights off, and if you think Schenn disappeared from the scoring sheet, this guy makes Schenn looks like Gretzky. They need more scoring on the team, not less. They also don't save really any cap room at all. I agree that getting the picks was a big plus, though.
