Survival Without Koivo

Don’t think about making the playoffs, not this year at least.  The exciting run into December has passed.  It was a short ride, the Wild were on top of the Western Conference on December 14 and the excitement was grand.  However with an Avalanche win tonight the Wild will fall from playoff contention.  Plan for next year Mr. Fletcher. Mikko Koivo’s separated shoulder put a stake in all Wild hope of making the playoffs this season. Koivo could miss between 4 and 6 weeks.  Horrible news for the t

Oh How Things Have Changed

Look back into the past and all of Buffalo was full of joy with new owner Terry Pegula in charge. Fans in this city were as amped up as I've seen in regards to the Sabres. Fast forward one year and my oh my how things have changed. Pegula and his management are under huge fire in Buffalo. Fans in this city are calling the new ownership team liars, greedy, and uninformed. These are terrible accusations and a terrible way for fans to look at their teams ownership group. How could you argue w

New York Rangers Beat Down The Maple Leafs

They may all look different and wear different numbersand names on their jerseys, but the Leafs came out as a eighteen Alex Kovalevs PHOTO: mapleleafs.com After a frustrating 3-2 loss last night against the Buffalo Sabres, the Maple Leafs were back at home in the ACC hosting the New York Rangers. Another loss tonight would put the Leafs back on the rim, fighting for a playoff spot. So the Leafs had to come out with some energy, but instead they came out flat. The Rangers also didn't have a grea

Has the Message Been Sent?

Marco Scandella was sent to Houston, Colton Gillies sent to Columbus via waver acquisition. Zanon to be benched from tonight’s lineup replaced by Lundin. Hackett will be the back-up in place of Backstrom who is said to be still ill. This list could be larger, there were more players in need of a wake-up call after the game with the Blackhawks on Thursday. So are these moves enough? Has the team heard the message that Yeo is stating? “It’s not acceptable to play one good game and then not p

Leafs Lose First Game of 2012 in Buffalo

Gustavsson in net for the LeafsPHOTO: TMLsHockeyBlog The Sabres started off with a quick goal against the Leafs. The puck was centered from behind the net and it deflected into the back of the net for a 1-0 Sabres lead. The Sabres would add another one just a few minutes later and suddenly the Leafs found themselves down 2-0 just five minutes into the game. Toronto would answer with two goals in the first to take a tie game into the second period but would ultimately lose the game by a s

UPDATE: Will Colton Gillies clear Waivers?

UPDATE: Colton Gilies was claimed by the Columbus Blue Jackets. -------Well, well, what a surprise. Claimed by the worst team in the league and he will now play under former Wild coach Todd Richards. Was Gillies not even worth a draft pick in a trade? _____________________________________________________________________________________ Colton Gillies was put on waivers this morning. If he clears at 12:00 EST Saturday, he will be reassigned to AHL Houston. Money isn’t the issue Gillies is in

Prepared for the Big Boys?

Thats a question to be answered by the Hawks on Saturday and Sunday. Coming off two 5-2 victories over Columbus and Minnesota, the Hawks now get a chance to test out their new lineup and (possibly) improved defense against two of the NHL's elite teams: at Detroit against the Deadwings on Saturday and Sunday at the Madhouse on Madison versus San Jose Sharks. Just a few comments on last night's game: Blackhawk Rookies, Andrew Shaw and Jimmy Hayes again had very good games each scoring a goal. As I

Winter Classic 2013

www.freep.com/article/20120112/COL22/120112046/Michael-Rosenberg-How-about-Winter-Classic-Ann-Arbor-Detroit- This column appeared in the Detroit Free Press yesterday by one of their sports/opinion coumnists. Now Michael Rosenberg is pretty much one of the biggest idiots they have on staff there. However, he does raise a few interesting points. Hosting the Winter Classic in Detroit does present a number of options which the NHL can "experiment" with. In my opinion, The SPIRIT of the Winter Cl

Let's Get Wild!

Tonight at the Madhouse on Madison the beloved Blackhawks take on the Minnesota Wild. Wow how a few weeks change things in the NHL. In mid December when the two teams met, the Wild were first in the Conference and the Hawks were slumping. When that game was all said and done, Kaner had just completed undressing Wild netminder Niklas Backstrom in the shootout and was leading a victorious Blackhawks team off the ice with a 4-3 win. For tonight, Minnesota is currently seventh in the West and ended

Wild @ Blackhawks Preview

Thursday, Jan 12, 2012 8:30PM EST at the United Center in Chicago Both Chicago and Minnesota are coming off much-needed victories on Tuesday. Minnesota (22-15-6), currently seventh in the West, ended a 1-8-3 slump with a 5-4 shootout win over San Jose on Tuesday. And the Blackhawks (25-13-5), though, followed that run by losing four straight before a 5-2 win over Columbus on Tuesday, pulling into a tie for the Central Division lead with surging St. Louis. Blackhawks to Honor Veteran of the War in Iraq

This was brought to my attention via an email received earlier today and I wanted to share it with all of you. First let me state that, the Mighty Blackhawks do an outstanding job of supporting and honoring our military, and tonight will provide another example of the organization helping a veteran and raising awareness for a great cause. At each home Blackhawks game there is an active-duty member of the Armed Forces as well as a veteran in attendance during the singing of the National Anthem by

Are Things Really Different?

On Feburary 18th of 2011 Terry Pegula took over as Sabres owner and gave a energize first speech even shedding tears at the sight of his hero Gilbert Perrault. All of Buffalo was full of joy calling for Feburary 18th to be known as Pegula Day for the rest of time. He promised Stanley Cups, he promised a changed atmospher, and he promised money no longer is an issue with this team. Pegula and Sabres President Ted Black spoke of a 3 year plan, in which they would be a "Championship Team, Attitu

End of the Road

The company I worked for picked a good weekend to send me to Atlantic City for work. I missed the 2 and a half games over the weekend. Loses to Carolina, Winnipeg, and Toronto. I walked off the plane last night and the first thing I saw on the TV at the bar outside my gate was a 2-0 Leafs lead last night. I said to my co-worker "It's like I never left". That score would hold up. The Sabres combined for 3 goals in their last 3 games. Vanek, Pominville, and Myers being the 3 goal scorers.

Stalberg Would Love to Play 82 Games Against the Jackets!

Last night, Blackhawks winger Viktor Stalberg recorded a Hat Trick giving him seven goals this season against the Jackets. He only has twelve on the season and was quoted after the game, "I wish it was like that every night!" I am sure he was referring to his goal output and not playing the 82 games against the Jackets. The Hawks PK killed all five of the Jackets power plays including a four minute pp in the first period when Montador was given an additional two minutes for instigating the fight

Blue Jackets visit the Blackhawks

The Hawks are on a four-game losing streak and have dropped five of their last six overall and tonight they face the Blue Jackets and the debut of interim coach Todd Richards, who took over for the fired Scott Arniel on Monday. Usually, when playing a team that has just changed coaches you worry about that teams players coming out with so much piss and vinegar to try and impress the new guy. Not sure how the Jackets will perform but if you recall when the Blues hired Hitchcock, the Hawks played

Flyers Need to Find a Friend Named Consistency

It’s been the story of the Flyers’ life this season. Bad bounces + deflections = a goal past Ilya Bryzgalov. Nothing changed during last night’s finale of a Home-and-Home series against the Ottawa Senators. With just 1:11 left in the third, Filip Kuba took a shot from the point that changed direction and went passed Bryzgalov. That was the 2nd time that game that a Sens goal went off a Flyers’ stick. However, the Flyers had plenty of chances to take command of the game, but failed to cash in on

Something has Got to Change

The Wild are now winless in its past seven on the road (0-6-1), with only five goals in that stretch. It's now 1-8-3 (five out of a possible 24 points) in its past 12 overall. They have gone from first in the NHL three weeks ago to seventh place in the West. Mike Yeo said after the Vancouver shutout that the timing of it couldn't be better as the team took a couple of days to regroup in Banff, but nothing has changed. The Wild only could put pressure on Kiprusoff in the first eight and final

The Evolution of the Enforcer

Last week with the waiver of Colton Orr, Brian Burke has stated he's "troubled" by the direction the game is going and "“I have this fear that if we don’t have guys looking after each other that the rats will take this game over,” Although the true heavyweight enforcer such as Orr, is slowly becoming extinct, fighting is still a major part of game and is still a skill that could get you on an NHL roster. The difference between today's "enforcers" and yesterdays, is enforcers need to be able to

Can it get worse than this?

Wow what a rough weekend for the Blackhawks. On Friday, the Hawks could not escape the Avalanche at the UC and were shutout 4-0 and last night they gave up a two goal lead to the Deadwings and lost 3-2 OT. During last night's game with the Wings, Sharpie absorbed a slash on his left arm as he scored the second Hawks goal. No penalty was called. Moments ago we learned that Sharpie will be out 3-4 weeks. It is believed that he has a broken wrist. The Hawks are now on a four-game losing streak and

Maple Leafs Trade Talks - Are Kulemin and Gunnarsson On Their Way Out?

Gunnarsson is getting a lot of looks from around the league.Could he be traded out of Toronto for an elite forward? PHOTO: mapleleafs.com Toronto is one of the best places to play hockey. Although sometimes playing in Toronto may bring a lot of heckling and grief your way (see Andrew Raycroft, Brian McCabe and many others
