  1. Expect Lou to see about re-signing him and then dealing him if he won't sign. In classic form, right after the break the Canucks visit the Devils, Rangers, and Islanders...
  2. According to the GM who hired him, it's the big hits he was looking for. Not, you know, actually playing defense... It's almost like the GM doesn't know how to build a successful hockey team.
  3. Again, I don't dislike the player, but at eight years and $6.25M he's totally a Fletcher creature now.
  4. You know who signed Sanheim to his current deal? Chuck Fletcher. You know who signed Sanheim to his eight year extension? Chuck Fletcher. True story.
  5. People would point to Giroux - who it should be noted they didn't want and knew little about. And there is a case for defensemen to develop slower. Sanheim is 26/27 - there is a point at which the player you see is the player he is. Maybe the master plan all comes together when Atkinson and Couturier are back. OK, shouldn't have said back... Anyhoo, when anyone thinks about players who really define this era, Travis Sanheim, lifetime Flyer, is on the top 4 for defence. If anyone ever talks about this legendary era once it's over...
  6. I don't dislike him, but I don't at all understand the rush to extend him for eight years at $6.25M. Especially not an entire year before they had to even make that decision. When I see a GM look at players like Laughton and Sanheim as worth 10+% of the cap, it makes me wonder. Good players, fine. Foundational pieces to lock up? When you're looking at a core of guys in their late 20s/early 30s who have never really achieved much of anything in terms of team success in the NHL and you're saying "these are our guys" it's worrisome. When it comes to "making the most of what you have" I like ol' Herbie Brooks as much as the next guy, but he was 219-222-66 in the NHL and never even made a Conference Final.
  7. And was picked two spots ahead of Cam York after Fletcher - wait for it - added a second rounder in a deal that, of course, he then packaged with a third to get... Bobby Brink. Also "passed" on Caulfield, Newhook, and Krebs to take York. A lot depends on how Brink and York pan out to evaluate those transactions.
  8. Yeah, another guy they just had to lock up long term because... reasons? Signed through 2030-31. At $6.25M per. He had 35 points in a season. Once. Four years ago. Another long term commitment to a player who hasn't achieved very much and is poised to compete to be adequate. Bring it to Broad.
  9. I remember it well, I was six to eight years old. OK, maybe I don't remember it all that well. Now I try to cope with it still being when I was six to eight years old with something that's disturbingly? conveniently also six to eight years old... If the glass is half empty, add ice - it's hockey.
  10. Right, like there's a franchise out there looking for physicality and willing to give up valuable rebuilding assets to take a risk on injury history. Pshaw.
  11. I traded a second rounder for a van down by the river!
  12. Added to your observation - the issue is that they're back to being a middling, bubble playoff team that they've been for a decade. And there's precious little evidence that more than that is even possible. Meanwhile the Phillies were in the World Series, the Eagles are in the Conference Final, the Union were in the MSL Final, and the Sixers bless their heart have challenged for the Conference Final the past few years. And "definitely a playoff team" is staring down another year no playoffs three years after the "good sign" of making the second round just six years after the "good sign" of losing to the Cup Finalist Rangers in 2014. That's not rain.
  13. There was a point at which the point they lost on Deangelo's trip would have been the cause for some discussion. Now, it really doesn't matter. For that matter, I'm not entirely sure he was tripped. He was stepping over a prone Copley and I suppose Kopitar may have clipped an ankle? https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/flyers-vs-kings-john-tortorellas-025100459.html
  14. I don't know that they need to do anything about him this year. But a motivated Patrick Kane at a reasonable salary interested in bringing a Cup to Buffalo is a UFA I'd be interested in.
  15. It's not a about controlling individual decisions. It's about how the organization* thinks about everything at a fundamental level. They are staring at five decades without a championship and Dave Scott is declaring they are doubling down. They can actually physically stop you from doing this at casinos.
  16. Pretty much what happens when other teams play "bad teams" that they think they should be able to beat. Like, for example, the Flyers... Don't underestimate Columbus, now. They're right in it to win it. Or lose it. Something. And Montreal is right there with potentially two lottery picks - a 10% chance as it stands now. The excitement is just...
  17. All three of them are signed for next year... I'd imagine the idea is to play Sanderstorm to see if they can increase his trade value.
  18. Right, good point. I was thinking "home grown" vs acquired. Same goes for Carolina. I don't know that there is a good "UFA" example in the post-cap era.
  19. Yeah, sorry, there was a lot happening and it was more putting down fire retardant than anything. Several mods have been in on the process.
