Howie58
Greetings: The Kraken are favored (-135) with a 57% win probability, but as this sportsbook notes, the Flyers do better as an underdog than the Kraken do as a favorite: https://www.bleachernation.com/picks/nhl-picks/2023/12/29/kraken-vs-flyers-prediction-picks-live-odds-and-moneyline-friday-december-29-2023/ Statistically, we are better on the PK, they are better offensively, but neither team is a faceoff leader: https://www.nhl.com/gamecenter/phi-vs-sea/2023/12/29/2023020554 Torts downplays fatigue in back-to-backs, but it may be a factor. Historically--we've met four times and split the series, but the Kraken are on a two-game win streak: https://champsorchumps.us/team/nhl/seattle-kraken/head-to-head/philadelphia-flyers I suspect Hart gets the nod, even if he did relief work. Erssson was taking infusions for dehydration after the game.

GratefulFlyers
wow Laughton -> Konecny shorthanded working the 2 on 1 again... 4 for TK now 9 for the Flyers tied for the league lead. those 2 on a rush read each other so well. pretty tight 1st not a ton of chances either way but the Flyers get one on the PK...nice! Imagine being an NHL coach and thinking that a guy like TK should not be on the PK?! And yet, that's what previous Flyer coaches, including Hakstol I think, thought. Amazeballs. 1

No seriously...you can't make this up.
GratefulFlyers
somebody tell the Flyers' skaters it's too early to salt away a 1-goal game. lol...what the hell...the whole 2nd on their heels waiting for the Krakers and flipping it out to center. could be the travel and playing last night is catching up to them they looked a little tired in the 2nd...be nice to get a win tonight after working at it for 40 minutes...they might have to dig deep to find some energy for the final 20. Howie58
The second almost put me to sleep. Zamula makes the PP more agile, but that isn't saying much. I hope the Flyers score early in the third. Agreed with Grateful, they can't sit on heels.

GratefulFlyers
yeah they got outworked and now it's 1-1....Hart is doing all a goalie can do.. Seems like that goal woke them up a bit now , some better pressure even a little forecheck happening finally man you gotta love the Flyers' transition and breakout game it's so good - can't remember when it was this good. the only thing is it may not be enough tonight they need to slow it down I think, work it deep and get a scrappy goal. Howie58
Seattle is charging. We need an expresso or two.
GratefulFlyers
tough one to get beat on...Hart had it read but left the 5-hole just barely open...bummer. I hate this 3 on 3 crap. Sure I like it more when the Flyers win but it still sucks.
Howie58
Sad loss but they got a point. This was a chess match. Schultz got the squeeze through. On to Calgary.
Samifan
Not a bad performance by a team in a back to back situation with the flu bug apparently going through the team as well
Howie58
We saw a game between two teams with similar coaching styles and no dominant scorer. I agree with some who say this could be a Stanley Cup preview a few years down the pike. I hope they're right!!!

Coming out of this game with a point is a victory.

I hope Briere doesn't try to land a big-time scorer this summer (or worse at the TD). The forward group has at least 2 promising young snipers, TK and Couturier the veteran leaders. Atkinson should fetch something, opening up a slot. Farabee, Tippett, Brink, Foerster even Frost are developing nicely. Poehling is a nice surprise. I love the 4th liners even if they are older guys; they "bring it" every night and they're not terribly expensive. I wouldn't worry about the forwards. The back end needs the creative attention. Maybe re-sign Walker? He sure can play but he'll bring a nice return. 29 years old, pending UFA with a reasonable cap hit ($2.65mil), plenty left in the tank. Re-sign him or deal him it should be a win for the Flyers either way. The TD is coming up fast. Ristolainen, Atkinson...Ristolainen, Atkinson...Ristolainen, Atkinson...
Howie58
I agree with all of you assessment, save for one point, our fourth line. Their expected goals is somewhere around .5 a game, and they are giving up dangerous chances. Agreed, they work hard, but it may not contribute. Stats say that ND should go when Cates comes back. The modern NHL needs a fourth line with credible scoring potential. I'm not sure the PHD line has enough jam. They have character, but stats say the team is hurt by them suiting up. My gut says that Hathaway and Poehling have some offensive skill, and Poehling skates well. Nic has character. But he may be clogging things up. I suspect Briere is aware of that.
GratefulFlyers
Yes you’re right I just have a soft spot for grinders and guys who make it a mission to hurt the other team. Not permanently or anything you know what I mean…. Even though their stats stink the eye test says they’re valuable as a line. There’s a good reason Tortorella keeps trotting them out there to start the game. If they don’t score they usually get a forecheck going. When the Flyers are rolling that carries over when the next bunch hits the ice. But you know all this and your point about 4th lines these days is a good one. The best 4th lines, like the Isles had (maybe still?) bring the pain but score goals too. And if the Flyers don’t eventually get a Kane/Matthews type they’ll need scoring from all 4 lines even more. I guess the question will be what you’re willing to take for Deslauriers. I hate to just give him away for a 3R but it’s probably the right thing to do.
