VLC to 4th Line C?

Meltzer tweeted this morning

Vincent Lecavalier moved down to 4th line center. Raffl on 3rd line RW with Read switching sides. McGinn on 2nd line LW.

and

40 has struggled at 5-on-5. Has been outplayed by Schenn at 2C. Hasn't worked out at either LW or RW. Limits remaining options.

"Happy" to see VLC back at center - he looks absolutely lost on the wing. Hopefully this can get some production into the 4th line and create a First, second and 3a/3b line?

That said, I'm not sold on McGinn on the 2nd line for any length of time. Not particularly happy with Downie there, either for what it's worth.

$4.5M to center the fourth line. Four more years to go.

Rad, I honestly think it is the only real spot for VLC at this point.   It goes w/out saying that he is not growing into his role as a winger and truthfully this move should have been made a while ago.    McGinn, well, I think he is a decent 4th liner and nothing more although I really dislike Downie too so not sure what I would do.   Raffl deserves a spot on the 3rd and think will be a good addition to that line.

I would much rather see Raffl on the 2nd line and McGinn riding the bus.

Ideally:

Raffl-Giroux-Voracek

Hartnell-Schenn-Simmonds

Read-Couturier-McGinn

Rinaldo-VLC-Hall

Something is off with VLC and this probably is not going to motivate him into playing better, but there is a "log jam" and he clearly is the weakest link at center. I can't wait to see how this contract looks in 3 years......

There is a reason that Tampa is paying him $30M over the next 14 years to not play for them...

the sad part Rad is that we did the same thing to Danny and came right back and signed another aging has-been to another ludicrous deal.   I can not even imagine how this is going to end b/c I really think this will go down as Homers worst deal ever.   He had a do-over w/ Danny and Bryzaster but this deal really makes no sense...

I don't mind the move.  I don't see many options. I think moving McGinn to the 2nd line might be trying to recreate the feeling the 2nd line had when hartnell was there and it was a bit more of a bang and crash line.

I know BM call's VLC a power play specialist but I don't see it.  I think using him on the 5-3 set up is a waste.  I would much rather leave the PP lines alone.  Anybody know where to access the 5-3 stats for this year? I don't recall having a worse 5-3 PP and I point the finger at VLC.

That all said I have nothing personal against him and I wish him well but I also wish he was playing somewhere else.

very valid point fanatic... although, I dont think this is a "funk" honestly.  I think this is what VLC is at this point of his career...

I think that's certainly possible, but I still don't think Rinaldo and Hall help him in any way, shape, or form. He needs "something" to work with. You have to create lines that - in theory - have a chance at working. Two muckers and an a washed up 1st line center is an awful combination. If one of those muckers had the slightest  bit of scoring touch, that'd at least be something.

Meltzer goes on to list all of the places VLC has "failed" to catch on with the Flyers

Flyers have variously tried 40 at C2,LW2, RW1, LW1, RW3... nothing has worked well since early this season before back issue.

Anyone notice where they haven't even tried the "washed up" first line center?

Even "before back issue" he had nine goals and five assists - in 22 games.  Assuming we project that out, his "better" performance projects to seven more points in 59 games than he has now.

I think you hit the nail on the head Rad.  Unfortunately, they are not going to move G over to wing but why not?!?!?!!

Similar to my earlier point I think this needed to tried a while ago...

Well, primarily because they shouldn't need to move G to wing.

They "filled a need" with VLC that didn't exist. The fact that there's no spot for VLC right now comes as a shocking surprise to no one not named "Holmgren."

It's too late in the game - especially this season - to muck around with the first line. You just don't do that sort of thing in a playoff push with 10 games to go in the season. You just don't.

Started off the season OK but after the injury he was never right? JMHO

LOL!!!  that line made me laugh!

I agree as well... It is a bad situation...

At least give the guy somebody like Downie or McGinn. I know nobody is please with how he's playing, but Christ, that's not going to change putting him with those two guys. It'd be like throwing Rinaldo on the PP because he's been trying really hard.

I think this signing is going to bite the Flyers in the ass hard. I see the only way out of the contract is to send a high pick with him to get a Walker type player in return.

I hated this signing since day one and think that they may have to ride this one out. Kind of like buying an expensive car with a 6 year note attached. Do you trade it in to pay $600 a month for a Kia Rio, or curse your car every time you get behind the wheel for the next  6 years.

I'd lean towards the second option. Keep him. Really no other choice. Besides we have no idea what Schenn is going to want this summer. Something tells me he'll be the odd man out unfortunately...

Im 100 % fine with this, yes vlc was better in the begining of the season between read and downie, because he was playing more center, yes he played some wing, but that didnt work with g at center either. He is better in the middle making plays. Im ok with this because Couts will be checking the other teams top forwards now, so i wont be suprised if this works, but they will have to keep him at center if he starts to score

Good. Vinny should rot on the forth line until he gets his panties out of a bunch and plays hard across the rink. No way I reward his Jeff Carter in Columbus impression with first line minutes.

McGinn on the second line? Bleh. Hope it's temporary.
