Making the Case for the Selke

Couturier has always been a solid two-way forward who could have received a Selke nod but due to his low point totals has never been included in the conversation. This season that could change. Through 74 games, he has posted 30 goals and 40 assists for a total of 70 points. His plus-minus rating is even more impressive at a career-high, plus-27 which is tied for sixth in the league.

worst. #8 pick. ever.

clearly, a defensive specialist.

Christ...I remember having to list all the 8th overall picks to a group of pessimists who thought he was a total letdown. Even then he looked like a good pick...now he looks great.

What I like about his season is not only that it vindicates my defense of him all these years, but it really supports what I understand about what I see on the ice and how it relates to a lot of advanced stats.  Reassures me that I know what I'm talking about and understand what I'm seeing.

Long story short, Cooter has been playing very well for a while now and has been the best Flyer at Even Strength for at least the previous two seasons.  What hurt so much and why it was hard to accept is that the team on the whole had been utterly horrible at even strength for about 4 seasons prior.

Now that Giroux has returned from his (presumed Berube, Hakstol &  Injury imposed) exile and Jake is actually a net positive Plus/minus player again, I don't get to claim that Coots is the best at even strength, but I do feel like he's had a lot to do at least the former and maybe a bit with the latter too.

Actually maybe I do get to claim that he's the best player at even strength.  He has the best +/- on the team, he has the most even strength goals (at total goals) and the 2nd most Even Strength Assists (behind G by one).

His Relative Corsi is good for 4th best on the team (which is really best on the team because the guys ahead of him are Morin, Sanheim and LIndblom and don't have a decent sample size... but then again maybe WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SEEING MORE OF THEM THIS YEAR, HUH?).

He's still has more Dzone starts than Ozone starts (most on the team for a forward), which is something most of the other Selke finalists every year can't claim (especially Mr. Special, Bergeron) and this year that's in spite of Cooter now being on the top PP unit.

In short, I haven't even read this article yet, but it's going to be very difficult for anyone to sway me against saying he has earned the Selke this year.

Well said sir. It's nice to see him putting up points...but most of us realized his value to the team prior to his breakout. Like most, put him with better players and you'll see the results.
