Game 76: Flyers at Capitals; 3/24/19 @ 12:30

It would be a good game to start Talbot and Morin.

There is nothing to play for now but a draft pick.

I would say pride but this team doesn't have any.

This could be a slaughter today.

Caps 6

Flyers 2

"Especially today, we were god-awful, oh my God in the second," Jakub Voracek said of the middle period. "I don't think we had a shot in the first 10 minutes. When they get zone time, they do a great job cycling us and keep the puck away from their net. I don't think we were moving well enough in the second period to give ourselves a chance to create something."

I'm sorry I know many here aren't wanting hear this and that is fine. I'm sure some will flock here to throw out 80 points and yahdah yahdah something else.

But the truth (and some here will also agree) Jake is part of the problem and he really needs to go.

I would love to see Chuck turn Jake into the vet defenseman the Flyers need.

I am tired of him floating and tired of his boneheaded turnovers and cycle killing plays.

Maybe he needs a wake up call and has got to comfortable and complacent in Philly.

I don't hate Jake but I acknowledge he is part of the problem not the solution.

Let's take his money and give it to a #2 defenseman to help Ivan out with his heavy burden.

Think of it as addition by subtraction.

Go take a run at Panarin this offseason that is another huge step in the right direction, don't let the Isles add him.

This won't fix all their problems but it will a few.

Greetings:

The Flyers are underdogs but have played well on the road of late:

Elliott may get the start to rest Hart.

6-1 Caps.  The Flyers haven't shown me they have any answer for the Caps this year.

One thing is for sure they need to add some fire power this offseason.

This team just has to many passers.

Someone has to shot and I would prefer someone who can actually get it on net.

The only two sniper types the Flyers have already who can help in that department are Farabee and Allison.

And both are young and don't even have entry level contracts even.

They need some proven scoring ability.

They need a guy like Panarin pretty bad.

It would be ashamed to see him go sign somewhere else in the East.

I'd love Panarin on Frost's wing. Frost can keep up and get him the puck.

It's not a realistic hope because even if the Flyers were to sign Panarin, he'd be put on a line with Giroux or Coots. Or even Patrick. Sigh.

I would be happy just to get him we can figure out where to play him next year....or the year after or the year after...

Well agreed.

What I guess I'm expressing (because you know how I do) is pessimism that they'll put him with the right people and they don't "gift" Panarin to a center based on seniority.

As long as they remove Jake for something nic in return I can't be patient while they play him with everyone except who he should be on a line with.

If they can find a #2 vet that they can lean on and no Gudas is not that guy, his folly in the neutral zone yesterday that lead to that last Bailey goal is just to know yeah not him.

Remove Mcdud from the roster completely and maybe even find a suitor for Hagg it would be a good start to next year.

Fingers crossed.

The #2 vet seems to be the common mantra, but I really don't even need that.   I mean, I wouldn't say "no" to it depending upon who and what it takes to do it (trade, FA-term/cost, etc.).

But just to agree to a certain extent.

Provorov, at this point, is my vet.  Yeah, he'll only be 23 next year so it's odd to say, but he'll be into his fourth season.   But admittedly, we probably want someone with a little more mileage and (hopefully) accompanying wisdom.  I don't know who that would be.  I don't want someone with a ton of salary or term, but I think that's legitimately what it would take, right?

On the current roster, other, than Provorov is (in no particular order)  MacDonald, Gudas, Ghost, Sanheim, Hagg, Myers, Morin.

Prospects are:  Freidman, Zamula, Ginning, Hogberg, Bernhardt, Wylie.   I'm probably forgetting someone.

Ordinarily, I'm of the "don't sign/trade for someone and block the kids.   But of the people currently on the roster, I think we're starting to have a good idea of what we have (with the exception of Morin, though maybe we're starting to see that too--an injury prone guy that might not make it).

Obviously, I don't move Provorov.  My other two "don't touch'em" are Sanheim and Myers.

I do anything I need to to not have MacDonald on the team next year.   I'm okay keeping Gudas for the third pairing, but I don't need to.  I like Hagg better than most, but I'm not against moving him to make room for the vet you describe.  I kind of want to hold onto Ghost yet.  Even if as a 3rd pairing PP/OT specialist.

I've been a little disappointed in Tyler Myers, but among free agents I'd consider him.  He'd probably be looking for $6.5M for 6 years or so.  Maybe slightly more on salary.  I honestly don't know that I want to pay him that much.

Jake Gardiner?  Also probably in the $5-$6M range and similar term.

I have a very hard time believing we'd be happy about the salary and term Erik Karlsson is going to command.  Particularly with anything past year 5.   I can see the torches on Broad Street and on this board by 2025 when he's a broken down mess and still making $9M+.

Strahlman will be 33 in August.  Interested in a 2-3 deal in the $4-5M range?  I might be.  He's not top flight and I don't think a #2, but he is steady and would provide veteran influence coming from a team that has been highly competitive.

Ben Chiarot?   He'll be 28 in May and is UFA coming from the Jets.  She shoots left.  He's only currently making $1.4M so what would that take?

The trade market is a whole different beast so I won't begin to play with that.

Let's pretend it's Tyler Myers (just because it will confuse the crap out of me with two Myers).

Provorov / T Myers?

Sanheim / P Myers

Gudas, Morin / Ghost

That leaves out MacDonald and Hagg.  One of Gudas or Morin (probably) becomes our 7th defenseman.

If it's someone like Strahlman, I think Phil Myers or Sanheim (likely) play with Provorov and Strahlman...I'm suddenly not really liking this idea at all.  LOL

Oh well [/ramble]

Quickly:   I don't think I'm interested in Jacob Trouba.  Talent yes, but he doesn't really check off the "veteran" box and I just perceive him to be a troublemaker.   If someone could alleviate that last concern, then maybe I'm interested.  But then I'm likely interested in talking to suitors for Ghost.

I would be interested in obtaining Nick Hjarlmrsson as the vet possibly of course depending on the price.

Okay, so you're talking trade rather than FA.  And that's probably the way this is going to have to go.

I'm okay with Hjalmarsson, but for me he slots like Strahlman at this point.  No offense whatsoever (which is fine), but I think a bit more swagger  than Strahlman.   I don't think he fits the #2 criteria but slots more at second pairing.   With only two more years on his deal, I don't think we have to worry about hating him down the road.

So, what are you thinking?  Something like this?

Provorov -- Sanheim

Myers -- Hjalmarsson

Gudas -- Ghost

Morin

One of the reasons I don't like Hjalmarsson with Provorov is that it would push Provorov into the position of being the one providing offense.  Maybe that's not a horrible thing.   But i kind of like him being the one defensively responsible on his pairing.  I'd definitely entertain the opposite argument now that I'm typing, though.  In general, I actually really like the idea.

This is why you need to show Elliott the door when they really really need him to cover their mistakes he craps the bed...

...really my grandma could shoot through that 5 hole....SMFH.

I'm not saying Talbot is the answer.

I'm just saying Elliott ISN'T!
