Samifan
Depth signing. @OccamsRazor and I have been begging for the flyers to sign him for a couple of years. Tons of offensive potential and still only 27. He will put up at least 60pts for the Phantoms next year. Got to know him a little bit while he played here for the Amerks. Although happy for him, considering the number of defensive prospects already in the A and on the way, the timing of his signing in Philly strikes me as odd. AJgoal
Yeah, I was just looking at that. Flyers/Phantoms had 15 defensemen either under contract or qualified for next year prior to this signing. This creates a real logjam on defense - and that's before you factor in Provorov's chances of making the big club. It's really got to make you wonder if this is a hedge against a future trade. brelic
http://flyers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=888676 The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have agreed to terms on a multi-year contract with free agent defenseman T.J. Brennan, according to general manager Ron Hextall. Below are some news & notes on Brennan: T.J. BRENNAN (D) PREVIOUS TEAM: Toronto Maple Leafs & Toronto Marlies (AHL) DRAFTED: 2007 (2nd Round, 31st overall) - Buffalo Sabres AGE: 27 (4-3-89) BORN: Willingboro, New Jersey VITALS: 6’1”, 213 pounds SHOOTS: Left Spent a majority of last season with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL where he averaged nearly a point per-game with 68 points (25g-43a) in 69 regular season games. His 68 points led the entire team in scoring, as well as all AHL defensemen, while also ranking tied for third among all players in the AHL. He won the Eddie Shore Award as the AHL’s outstanding defenseman for the 2015-16 season, which was the second time in the last three seasons he has won the award (2013-14). He added five goals and nine points in 15 Calder Cup Playoffs games to help lead the Marlies to the Conference Finals. He also appeared in seven games for the Toronto Maple Leafs, recording one goal and an average of 15:06 of ice time. He has a total of 53 NHL games under his belt, recording 13 points (5g-8a), in stints with the Buffalo Sabres, Florida Panthers and Maple Leafs. He has posted a total of 113 goals and 206 assists for 319 points in 443 regular season games in the AHL. Brennan grew up and played youth hockey in the Philadelphia area - he was a member of the Philadelphia Little Flyers and played in the Flyers Cup tournament in 2005 with Moorestown high school in New Jersey. pilldoc
I think it is totally a depth signing .... but I like @AJgoal idea that he could be used in a potential trade. http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/t-j-_brennan/ Talent Analysis A former lacrosse player, Brennan is still taking his team and slowly developing into a well-rounded defenseman. His talents, including his fluid skating and hard shot, projects him to be more of an offensive defenseman, but Brennan is not afraid to get his nose dirty or play physical. Future Brennan was dealt by the Chicago Blackhawks to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Spencer Abbott.
AJgoal
@pilldoc - I didn't mean Brennan would be used in a trade, otherwise someone else would have signed him. I meant signing him because you intended to trade someone else.

Samifan
Apparently he turned down a 1 year/$1.5mil offer from the KHL. http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/t-j-brennan-toronto-maple-leafs-marlies-report-khl-offer-million-ufa-free-agent/
WordsOfWisdom
Is this the same TJ Brennan mystery man from the Leafs? For a team that needs D, why are the Leafs getting rid of prospects? Granted, his appearance late last season sucked ballz, but the guy has never had a real look at the NHL level.

Can't explain why Toronto was not interested in bringing him back or why the Flyers (who have a ton of D) signed him now but I am happy for him. He's a good kid that may never be good enough for a regular spot in the NHL but he seems to be too talented for the AHL.

I think he'd do fine in the NHL if a team would actually play him for 82 consecutive games.

Yes and give him a solid defensive specialist to play along side of him because he is an "offensive defenseman".... ...but unless Hexy is planning something he is coming in to give the Phantoms some fire power on the blueline and help with getting the Phantoms into the playoffs anything more than that would be a cherry on top. That gives us crazy depth on the Phantoms. Brennan / O'Neill Sanheim / Morin Hagg / Alt Wilcox And what about the three camp invitees - Vala, McFadden, and Mennel? I'm guessing if they're given contracts, it will be with the Phantoms? There is some definite potential there. I'm gonna go ahead and say that the Flyers might very well have the most potent blueline in the AHL next year - and those under-the-radar moves to get Brennan and O'Neill will take some pressure off Sanheim and Morin, giving them the time and space to grow into their roles and earn them. I think Hextall has done a great job at getting both quantity and quality on defense. Goaltending seems to be in the same position. Our forward prospects aren't quite there yet, but it's being restocked.

Especially with arbitration he could walk away from Manning and plan on Brennan being his 7th.
