  1. I threw his name up too The only person I have ever seen trash Tretiak's goaltending is Phil Esposito. I heard things about a goaltender for Czechoslovakia who outdueled the Soviets and Tretiak for gold twice in the 70's on a vastly inferior team. Anyone got a name for him?
  2. Was Roger Millions fired for this?
  3. I saw it a lot in Shark games vs Columbus. but also when I happened to catch a columbus game vs anyone. Often if the sharks are not playing, I will watch whatever team strikes my fancy.
  4. And Kurri With Brodeur that is usually the point I bring up when people decide to go with pure "He has the best wins + shutouts" Yes the Oilers were not all that bad in their own end. Coffey was pretty bad, and sometimes Gretzky, but Gretzky tilted the ice the other way in a way that makes him transcend the need for 2 way play.
  5. I hate that idea. Usually the truly skilled superstars can make magic happen no matter who their linemates are. Joe Thornton turned Cheechoo into a 56 goal scorer and scored 96 points at one point when michalek was 2nd with 55 points. Occasionally you get a superstar who needs others specific tools to make him stand out, but usually, players who need to carry the load and play more because they are the team do better than Nash. What I notice about Nash is, his lack of effort. Sometimes, you can see him just dictate his will. He decided to show up that night and the other team is easing up on the forecheck and crossing their fingers every time he is on the ice. But if for whatever reason he decides he is not happy that night, he will float. Which is 2/3rds of the games I see him play.
  6. Heya hollywood. Good to see the most active poster from our prospects/minor league forum still filling us in
  7. Welcome old friend @Dgill haha. I forgot you live in Halifax too. Nice win for the mooseheads eh? Pretty nice to watch the #1 and #3 overall picks their entire predraft season. I kinda prefer Drouin over Mackinnon(Even though Mackinnon is a beautiful Skater.) you must be beyond pleased to have grabbed Mack.
  8. oh Definitely, but like we said, it is more for the people who merely look at stats and GAA and win/loss records that we apply that philosophy to Brodeur. Some people equate stats with wins. Ed belfour has more wins and a better GAA than terry Sawchuk, but I have never seen a list that rates him higher. Same if you look at Curtis joseph vs Billy Smith. The point is merely that his wins and GAA don't necessarily make him better than Roy/Hasek. I know I rank him below them
  9. This was the first thing I was wondering
  10. In some cases, nothing. In some cases, it means a lot. If someone picked up a game winning goal in a 7-2 Hockey game, I would say the goal did not mean a whole lot in terms of clutch. However it "May" have. When 2 teams are tied and playing hard, sometimes the game winning goal opens the floodgates as the other team goes a bit more offensive trying to tie it back up. Witness Canada vs USA in 2002. The 5-2 score is deceiving because that game was super close. The Game winning goal in that game definitely means something. And obviously, Crosby's game winning goal in the 2010 Olympics overtime was HUGE
  11. Oh defnitely. But it certainly inflated the look of his win/Loss ratio and GAA/Shutouts compared to other better goalies.
  12. Since I work today, ill entertain in other ways
  13. yeah, I have been a big fan of old time games. i watch every one can get my hands on
  14. Good old 80's Hockey Goal # 7 two leafs haul him down and he scores it while falling. I swear to god, his stick lights on freaking fire as he shoots that one in AMAZING Not quite as amazing as when he put the puck in Bourque's skate and let Bourque kick it forward for him. but close
  15. The thing is, they expected him to be more like Mark Messier. If you clutched and grabbed Messier, you could almost certainly count on getting part of a stick or Elbow in your face when he was young and hotheaded.
  16. Clutching and grabbing was happening a ton even in the 80's. The main difference in the mid 90's were team systems were figuring out how to exploit it better. Goaltenders like Brodeur were so good at handling the puck that the trap that forced people to dump and chase could not really be chased. Jersey won a cup with it. the next year, the league cracked down on obstruction at the start of the year. So many powerplays that year and so many 100 point seasons. but they put away their whistles in the playoffs and then a starless Panthers team went to the finals. The next year, 50-75% of the league decided to employ it one way or another. The red wings Left wing Lock was not quite the trap, but it was a defense first system and a lot of teams with better superstars tried emulating that as well.
  17. at best, when the era is that big of a gap, all you can do is read old news articles and compare them relative to how they did to their peers and how the news portrayed them
  18. There have been tons of rumours like that for other teams Some were not rumors tho. Shanahan for one
  19. Yup. Pads today are twice as big and half as heavy. Remember when the leather soaked up water and by the 3rd period, goalies really were tested?
  20. Not with Sakic or Bourque:) He was a bit of a freak tho
  21. Agreed, although I rate players by their peak and Prime quite a bit more heavily than I do their career. For Example, Mike Gartner was a very good player for a log time. Like 20 years. However, in No year that he played was he among the top 10 players in the NHL. Alex Ovechkin could retire tomorrow and I would consider him a better player easily with his 8 years vs Gartner's 20. However if you were exceptional for a long time, like Joe Sakic for example. I consider him above both, and do not think twice about it
  22. I tend to agree, although Hasek's year in buffalo were behind a trap system as well
  23. Stay Away, the Sharks want him There are a few names still out there that the sharks could look at to fill their depth problem. i am still estranged by the Idea that our Big Defenseman Brent Burns has moved to wing. Dan Boyle is not getting any younger.
  24. Hmmm, Well for the hall of fame numbers.....(Should not be team specific). Bill Barber 12 seasons. 903 games played. 420g, 463a, 883Points RS, 129 Playoff games, 53g, 59a, 108 points 6GWG. Rick MacLeish 13NHL seasons, 349 g, 410 a, 759 points. 114 playoff games, 54 g, 53 a, 107 points 11GWG. MacLeish has 2 big years to Barber's 1, but Barber looks better if you look at 5 best seasons. Honestly, I do not think either deserves the Hall of Fame since neither were ever going to be considered close to the best player in the league. but I am picky about the Hall of fame like that. I think it should be a more rare breed of superstar inducted.
