franchise....EVER.

Buffalo as a franchise definitely tanked to try to get McDavid and wound up with Eichel. Definitely. Not even a shadow of a question. It was a stated goal.

It's not a matter of "playing to lose" - it's a matter of assembling a roster without any real talent on it.

Look at this mess: https://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/BUF/2014.html

The top scorer had 44 points in 76 games and it was Cody (freaking) Hodgson. They had two 20-goal scorers. 20 and 21. They scored 151 total goals. In a season.

It happens.

I am and always will believe that there is no way in hell an NHL player would EVER tank, no player or franchise....EVER.

Just does not happen in hockey.

Every time there is a generational player in the draft teams tank. You can call it whatever you want. It doesn't mean the players on the ice are not trying(Kevin Hayes) but hockey ops have bottomed out their lineups countless times.

The purpose of the draft lottery was to eliminate, or at least diminish the trend to tank. It doesn't seem to work so well when you see what did bottom teams like Chicago for example. Just emptying the team and reach a tremendous level of suckage. And the idea of being rewarded for being horseshít with the first pick bothers me a bit. I think we've all done that but here's two recipes:

One solution would be to have a Loser bracket with eliminated teams once the playoffs begins. You go 9-16, 10-15, etc. The winner gets the first pick, the finalist the #2, and then you go by number of points with the remaining teams. For the play-off teams, you stay as is. Also, more games = more money, the League would love this angle. The teams failing to qualify for the playoffs by a few points would then have home ice advantage and play against the worst teams: logical in a sense because they previously fought for grabbing a play-off berth rather than just losing. No need to have a best-of-7, you can go with best-of-5 or even best-of-3 series. You want the first overall? Fight for it.

Or if you wanna keep the lottery, equal odds for all teams: 1/8 = 12.5%

Oh ya, the Sabres DEFINITELY tanked. Murray traded away all his decent goalies to make sure it happened after Nolan had them winning a few games. That on top of the already depleted roster. He also made the trade for Evander Kane knowing Kane was injured for the season among other "deals". He destroyed that roster so badly it's now 11 years and counting.

So Torts is right, tanking is asinine.

Chicago management has done their best to tank this year as well. Players might not all be on board, or the coach, but management certainly is.

Great suggestion! Equaling the odds for the first pick would prevent GMs from assembling rosters that are designed specifically to lose games. I’m not sure how you’d sort the remaining picks but removing the incentive to lose is a good start.
