Leach27
Flyers need to stop this trend of coming out with no energy in the 1st period. This was a huge problem last year and was one the reasons, that we lost so many games. In the 1st pre-season game we were flat vs toronto in the 1st and went down 3 goals and failed to "storm" back. The game tues vs nj they were flat in the 1st and outshot 11-4, painful to watch. What do you think the problem is here??
jammer2
@Leach27 "What do you think the problem is here??" Tons of variables....a bad group that does not care? Lack of conditioning? Lack of proper motivation? Players throwing the coach under the bus? I don't really know the answer, only that it's an ongoing problem. I think out the variables you mention "proper motivation" stands out to me.
jackhole
Not sure if its truly a deficit in motivation. These guys wanna win. I can relate. I know when I play, I usually stink for the 1st 20 mins or so, before I get my head out of my ass. But I usually atone for my mistakes by the end of the game. Its not that I'm not motivated, just that it takes some time for me to get the 'bone head' plays out of my system and get the feel of the game before I start to perform well. Granted, were I a professional, with a coach, perhaps there are preparations that could get me going right off the bat. Perhaps its more that they need better 'direction' for their motivation at the start of games? (Maybe I've modeled my game from watching too much Flyers lately? I don't think they got into the nhl by being a lazyass.
DaGreatGazoo
I've heard all the cliche's about this topic, and not just as it relates to the Flyers. "They are professionals, they should be ready to play", "Players play, coaches coach". Then I've heard coaches say, "It's our job to prepare the team. We need to be better prepared, etc" In the Flyers case, it's been a continuing issue for several years. Because of that, I think this issue falls on the coaching staff. Whatever the true reason(s) are, if the same thing happens over/over/over, and coaches don't correct it, that's on them.

I would like to submit a alternative reason..... The pregame skate. When I get the chance to go to games, I'm usually there an hour before hand to watch the pregame skate. It's the same thing over and over. They skate around at half speed and shoot the puck. I'd even go as far as saying that most don't even break a sweat. Then the first period comes and they play like they are still in the pregame skate. I think Lavy needs to up the tempo from the time they walk into the building. Increase the tempo of the pregame and it will correlate to being better from the puck drop. That's my hypothesis.

MaineFlyFan
I've found the entire pre-season a complete BORE. The 3 games I watched were painfully slow and I was thinking to myself "Oh man, Please don't let the 1`st half of the season be like this......AGAIN....." Prove me wrong Fly Guys! goalnut3133
Very interesting. I wonder how it compares with other teams? Sorry about the game tonite vs NJ, fellas! The game chat in the shoutbox barely lasted... I couldn't see it televised but the guys gave the play-by-play. Well, to be honest, when I started reading this thread, it sounded so eerily similar to the 'Nucks (or as rad calls them, the Nyucks). Only in our case, the annoying pattern is that they tend to come out strong in the 1st period, & then head into Suck City for periods 2 and 3. (or some variation thereof, but usually ends up with a bad 3rd, like they just run out of steam, no consistency, no stamina). The only reason we won tonite 5-0 vs Rangers is cuz they just did not show up to play, no legs, jetlagged, exhausted. King Henrik had also left the building it seems before the game began. Don't know what happened there. So I can entirely relate to the Flyers' situation & your frustrations. In your case, I don't know how they could get the jolt to get going? In our case, I don't know how they're going to have the stamina to keep going the other 40 mins? Hopefully Torts can change things up for us. (See you guys on Oct 15th! )

goalnut3133
I heard they make creams for that stamina problem? @pilldoc But Viagra lasts at least 4 hrs doesn't it? So then, that should cover us for any overtime too! (We'd be willing to try your cream compounds though, heck, we'll try anything at this point...just get us past the 1st/2nd round come playoff time! IF we make it there, that is!)

I have a job that is really physical. It sounds odd, but I love to get soaked in sweat before my shift even starts. (yeah, I work for free 10-15 minutes before I even start to get paid!) It gets me into this work mode and I even get a snarl going...it sets me up for a good hard days work....so yeah, I love that theory of yours, the more I sweat to start out, seems like the harder I work, as strange as that sounds....I can easily see this being applied to hockey players, given the physicality of the game itself. Please nobody say it can tire them out, ha ha....their cardio should be at the point where a early pre game soaking should take nothing out of them. If it does not make me tired and lethargic for the rest of my shift (and I'm 48 soon), I'm thinking a pro athlete in their prime should be ok.
