They are going to end up in the worst possible spot

Flyers have precious few true rentals and fewer still with reAl value...

True but you'd think that since most of the guys we'd want to trade would have more value since they aren't rentals. Depends on the buyer.

Everything depends on the buyer.

At the deadline, teams are generally patching a hole for this year.

None of the Flyers guys lose value by being traded in the offseason when the calculus is different for potential buyers.

You would think that after losing Toronto and Carolina that Flyers management and Snider would face the facts that we are not a playoff team and we would clean house and sell off as many of our defensemen as possible and if anyone is stupid enough to take VLC, McD  or the Hamburgler that would be great too. If we do clean house, then a direct result might mean losing more games and dropping further in the standings  to get a better pick, which would be great

Add losing to Buffalo... Even as obsessed with winning now as Snider is, I just can't imagine he is that delusional not to acknowedge they are NOT a playoff teeam.

Clean house, dump salaries, load up on draft picks, pick up some decent free agents, and they are not too far off next year, although realistically, I think this is a 2017 team.

except lately (Feb) they're beating teams ahead of them and losing to scrub teams. Go figure...last night they looked pretty sharp for the most part. Mason saved their ass again but their PK looked great, the PP was good and 5 on 5 they skated well. Without knowing this season's history, looking at the 2 teams last night you wouldn't guess 1 is way over .500 and the other is out of a PO spot. (at least I wouldn't)

If the Flyers make the POs and Mason stays healthy (or at least plays all the games) I figure they have just as good a chance as anyone of coming out of the East.

As much as it was ridiculed around here (because it was interpreted as a statement of the team's philosophy instead of what it was, a simple observation), "just make the POs and anything can happen" is true.

If we're talking about making the Final, fine. If we're talking about winning the Cup it really isn't.

CAN it happen? Of course. People hit the lottery.

But when you can count the number of non top four seeds who won the Cup on fewer than the fingers on one hand, it's like saying that anyone who goes to casino "can" win big. It IS "possible" but the odds are so ridiculous against it that to count on it as an organizational philosophy (Hextall JUST said it again) is a fool's errand.

And even the "surprise" Cup winners genrally made big late season moves (LA/Crater) and/or were at the start of successful runs with a purpose built team.

It's not someone walking in and putting the rent money on 17-black.

He has his issues but he is a better defenseman than Sekara and he basically netted 2 1st round picks...so i'm sticking to my guns i wouldn't give him away.

He'll fetch a 1st at the witching hour!

Any GM that would give up 2 picks (one of which is a first) and a roster player is a boob or desperate. Tampa's GM deserves to me pointed at and mocked.

Yeah, I agree that Schenn *could* be that guy. Coots *could* be that guy too. But as of right now, the only one who *is* that guy is Simmonds. There's a real lack.

So maybe time and patience is the answer. Or maybe Laughton is the long-term answer. Or Cousins. Or maybe we trade Couturier for Ryan O'Reilly. I don't know.

I just know that beyond G, Jake, and SImmonds, we have a bunch of bottom 6 players as it currently stands. That's one of the primary reasons for our struggles this year.

I don't believe that at all.

After i seen what Sekera fetched i knew Coburn could bring as much if not more.

Buy-bye Coburn make sure you remember to turn your back on Giroux when he skates in with the puck on Bishop...you do it so well!!!!!

I am reminded of my Econ 101 class, which I hated. The professor always said an asset is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it and I always thought, "F-ck that, you just got ripped off."

I'm leaning that way too. It's still possible that he develops into that though.

If you were GM and decided that one of B Schenn or Couturier could be traded, which one would you keep?

If I'm a GM of this particular Flyers team, I don't trade either. They are not good enough and the players are still young enough to where it's not time to give up on either. If they were a playoff team and forwards were expendable, it depends on where each is with their career. As is, I'd keep Couturier over Schenn. If Schenn grew into a 70 point player, it would be a harder decision.

Maybe it says something about me, but I refuse to call a grown man "Cooter".

I do just because i always butcher spelling his name otherwise it doesn't bother me...but as a kid i watched the Dukes of hazard to it doesn't bother me.

And i have friends with much worse nicknames than that.

I'd rather spell his name wrong consistently and be judged for my poor spelling than call him Cooter.

If the season were to end right now, the Flyers would finish with the 8th overall choice. That's a top 10 choice and in this draft, that's a good spot to be in. I know people on here would give their right nut for McDavid, but there are a lot of good players available in this draft besides McDavid and Eichel. The Flyers are going to get a good player and when you look at the teams in the bottom third, I'd say the Flyers are further ahead than most of the teams and it could be as early as next season when they're back in the playoffs. There's a considerable amount of talent in the pipeline. They just need a good coach to bring the young kids along. The fact that Berube hasn't been extended yet is a positive sign that he probably won't be back because if he were, he would have been extended by now. I think Hextall's waiting for other other coaches to drop and gut feeling says he'll go after Tippett if he gets fired in Phoenix. Babcock is out of the question because he's going to Toronto.

I was thinking the same thing, n. The fact that no extension has been signed is a positive sign. I really hope you're right. Would love to see Tippett over Berube any day. Loved Lappy as a player but as a coaching staff, he has to go as well
