Recommended Posts

Here is the beginning list, of what I hope will be he NHL2015 Entry draft top prospects.  I thought it would be nice to have it in one central location to discuss and debate who the Flyers or matter fact what other teams may do come draft time.  I have 1-5 done.  Hope to have 6-10 done later today.  Enjoy!

1) Connor McDavid

Ht/Wt: 6' 0"/185 lbs
Position: C
Team: Erie (OHL)

Has a 'next generation' processor and sees the game in a 'parallel universe.' Lightning quick in his head, hands and feet and what the minds directs the feet and hands can do. Exceptional ability to recognize both opportunity and danger at the same time and then exploit the opportunity and avoid the danger. Big time competitor albeit a 'quiet' one but lethal.

Analysis: Craig Button - TSNs Direct of Scouting - updated Sept. 25th

An intelligent and highly creative player who makes dynamic plays that will pull you out of your seat…a fluid skater who moves with outstanding speed, agility, solid quickness and an impressive change of pace…he controls the game whenever he touches the ice, and uses his intelligence and vision to put the puck exactly where he wants it…has a very sharp, accurate shot that allows him to pick corners or small openings on the tender even while in full flight…not afraid to work the wall and retrieve pucks himself…has all the tools to become the NHL’s next superstar…just an incredible offensive talent. (August 2014)

One of the most talked about prospects in awhile, he was granted exceptional player status by Hockey Canada, and became just the third player to be granted the draft exemption behind New York Islanders forward John Tavares and current Barrie Colts defenceman Aaron Ekblad. In April 2012, he was named the GTHL’s player of the year after scoring 33 goals and 39 assists for 72 points in only 33 games with the Marlies. Incredible on-ice vision, and can control play at top speed. Possesses all-direction skating ability and great acceleration that compliments his high-end skill-set. His vision, IQ, skating and hands make his a threat with every touch. Plays at such an exceptionally high tempo that he is a threat whenever he is on the ice. He was selected to the roster for the World Junior Under-18 Tournament in April, 2013. and was also a member of his homeland’s team roster for the World Junior Under-20 at Christmas 2014.

Projected to be drafted in 2015 NHL Draft: 1st Round, 1st Overall Pick

2) Jack Eichel

Ht/Wt: 6' 2"/193 lbs
Position: C
Team: Boston Univ.

The other superstar in the making, Jack Eichel, looks like he is prepared to give Connor McDavid a real run for number one. He was very impressive after the first period in the US Top Prospects game period (nobody looked that good in the first period other than the goalies) playing on a line with Jeremy Bracco. There doesn’t appear to be a lot separating the two potential superstars and a team could easily swing for the big body feel that a Jack Eichel in your lineup could provide.
Profile from: Eldon MacDonald of The Hockey Writers - updated Oct. 19th

Jack possesses excellent skating ability and is able to execute at a very high rate of speed. He attacks and because he can beat defenders with speed, quickness, or lateral mobility, they are on their heels trying to defend him. He can adjust on the move and he recognizes where he can take advantage. With an excellent shot and power in his game, he is a nightmarish proposition for opponents to try and deter. Takes on the challenges in a game & excels.

Analysis: Craig Button - TSNs Direct of Scouting - updated Sept. 25th

A very consistent offensive force who brings it every shift…tough to contain for his peers as he can bull his way where he wants as well as maneuver the puck with skilled hands…is a responsible defensive player who has the ability to pick-pocket the puck on the backcheck and start up ice quickly…is dangerous with a strong selection of shots, plus elite-level playmaking skills that include the ability to find seams with impressive vision and deceptive passing...gives strong efforts and plays in all situations…relentless on puck pursuit…NHL star in the making. (August 2014)

The US born centre may not be as good as the top guy but he sure looks like a generational player in his own right. He is a quick off the face-off circle skater who can jump onto defender can get pucks before they know it. A power player who could also project to wing, because he has tremendous jump, balance and punch when he engages. So light on his edges, with a powerful long stride, and a really long reach, he is beyond dangerous with the puck. Finds himself the open spaces. Can enter and exit the face-off circle with the the puck and ramp to high gear and let it go as quick as the best. Reads situations and can go end to end like the 200 foot player he is. Plays centre and is very good there, but his quick release and wall work might have teams projecting him as a attack winger too. He is a lunchpail team player with impact player toolbox. He was selected to the roster for the World Junior Under-18 Tournament in April. Already committed to Boston University where he began with strong goal and point totals from the onset. There's no doubt in my mind he could dethrone McDavid, based on his all-around smarts and play. So many of the recent early first rounders are kept on the NHL rosters because the braintrust think they better off developing there, and giving the fans a look at what might be coming. In Eichel's case, you will see him take a top centre role away from someone, because he is a game-changer from shift one. A member of his homeland’s team roster for the World Junior Under-20 at Christmas 2014.

Projected to be drafted in 2015 NHL Draft: 1st Round, 2nd Overall Pick

3) Noah Hanifin

Ht/Wt: 6' 2"/200 lbs
Position: D
Team: USA U18 NTDP

Noah Hanifin also had a very good US Top Prospects game although he didn’t stand out as much as Jack Eichel and Jeremy Bracco. Noah is that NHL-sized defenseman with an elite skating ability and all the physical and mental tools that NHL teams are looking for in a defenseman these days.
Profile from: Eldon MacDonald of The Hockey Writers - updated Oct. 19th

Plays with a poise and guile that is exceptional. His ability to put himself in advantageous position to make plays, both defensively and offensively, allows him to impact the game in every single situation. He never seems to be rattled, rushed or hurried in his play. Skating is superb and he has great confidence and ability with the puck. Can dictate the play.

Analysis: Craig Button - TSNs Direct of Scouting - updated Sept. 25th

The 2015 draft’s top defenseman…a smart and powerful two-way force… big, but very mobile... moves well with good speed and agility…uses his strength and reach very well when he rushes the puck, and he is tough to contain when he gets going…is skilled and confident with the puck and has the ability to take it end-to-end…used his size and body well to contain players and box them out on the walls…is smart and makes great defensive decisions…has an instinctive knack for knowing where his teammates are on the ice…supremely skilled quarterbacking the power play. (August 2014)

Large two way defender who displays good vision and on ice smarts. Is a mobile fluid defenseman who has an excellent offensive upside to match his edgy defensive side. Four-direction skater who has great vision, poise, and makes the best plays on most shifts.
Has verbally committed to Boston College.

Projected to be drafted in 2015 NHL Draft: 1st Round, 3rd Overall

4) Dylan Strome

Ht/Wt: 6' 2"/177 lbs
Position: C
Team: Erie (OHL)

It was apparent right from the first puck drop in the Ivan Hlinka tournament that Dylan Strome was going to be that special player that many thought he could be this year. Bigger, stronger, faster, providing real offense, Dylan has almost kept up with his famous teammate, Connor McDavid, with twenty-one points a game after eight games. He was also a real sniper in the Ivan Hlinka – getting a goal per game in the tournament.

Profile from: Eldon MacDonald of The Hockey Writers - updated Oct. 19th

A smart, good skating, center who can not only make plays but can finish them also. Reads the play so very well and he gets himself into positions where he can take advantage and be a threat. He's multi-dimensional in that he can play two-ways, can play a skill game, can play a 'heavy' game but regardless of the situations he plays a game where he contributes in some way, some fashion.

Analysis: Craig Button - TSNs Direct of Scouting - updated Sept. 25th

Elite offensive forward…a big forward who moves well, and demonstrated some very good power and speed…is tough to contain as he used his speed, strength and creativity to beat defenders...has great vision with the puck and sees the ice very well…uses his crafty hands to dance around defenders and get into positions where he could shoot or set-up teammates…distributes the puck well and is able to create a lot of chances…has a lethal wrist-shot with great power and a pretty good release…uses his size and reach on the boards to win the puck and get in good supporting areas to pick up loose pucks…defensive effort goes up and down. (August 2014)

Needs very little time and space to let quality chances fly off his stick. He does tend to hold the biscuit and try to one man the play when he could use his linemates. That may be because he has high confidence in his handling abilities, and his ability to put the eventually puck wherever he wants. If he keep his game simple he can be part of a dominating unit. He is great at finding a place for himself in the slot and get his stick on shots or his devastating wrist shot go. Has shown in junior all the attributes you look for in projecting a prospect to the pro game: Speed, power, vision, and high end hands that help him carve the attack zone piece by piece. Has a willingness to work the wall and his reach and speed win many 50/50 puck battles. The only negative might be that his defensive effort has been questioned and that it appears on many shifts, he can go unnoticed or just seems to be invisible. (In perspective, there are very few prospects whom this description doesn’t apply.)

5) Mitch Marner

Ht/Wt: 5'10"/164 lbs
Position: C
Team: London (OHL)

I liked Mitch Marner last year in London where he had 59 points in 63 games. His even strength points per sixty minutes (ES 60) of 3.1 were the best of the first year draft eligible players for 2015 in the CHL not named Connor McDavid who had 3.9. This year, he was, in my estimation, Canada’s best skater at the summer Ivan Hlinka tournament (seven points and a plus five rating in five games). What I particularly like about Mitch is that he is a complete player with size his only major shortcoming. Unfortunately, Mitch, like the rest of the London Knights, is off to a rather slow start (five points in nine games). I expect Mitch to pick it up substantially as the season moves on.
Profile from: Eldon MacDonald of The Hockey Writers - updated Oct. 19th

Combine skill, smarts and confidence and you have Mitch. Excellent playmaker who can make plays in and through the tightest of spaces. Very elusive with his skating but can attack & beat defenders 1-1. Sees plays unfolding and is very comfortable holding puck to allow them to develop. Plays with an assuredness that is threatening and he doesn't take a 'back seat' in the game.

Analysis: Craig Button - TSNs Direct of Scouting - updated Sept. 25th

Smallish forward with a real scoring touch…scores in multiple ways…always in the right spot to receive a pass…a good wrist shot, and he plays with a lot of grit and isn't afraid to crash the net for chances…has the hands and creativity to go end to end with the puck…speedy and very agile…excellent foot speed and quickness, and is tough to contain when he gets going; he can beat nearly anyone on the ice with his speed…impressive hand speed and creativity…sees the ice well and makes some really good passes…is a threat on each shift…work ethic and compete level are impressive…relentless pressure on the puck. (August 2014)

Has abundant skill, speed, agility, and quick hands that makes him a threat on every touch. A hard worker who uses his gifts as a relentless forechecker, attacker and scorer. Reads the play and is a good set up man besides being a 200 foot home run end to end attacker. Clearly not a kid man but still is willing to attack the front, work the corners and engage with the enemy whenever necessary. He works hard to get pucks back, no matter the price. Great combination of hand-eye-feet speed and edging that set him apart from most of the others in the Canada Under-18 camp. His strength is his great lateral agility and ability to keep possession through countless defenders, read the options, and then place a soft pass on to a teammate’s stick.

Unless the Sharks win the lottery, I think I would be going for Hanafin 2nd overall. Game breaking #1 defensemen are so much harder to attain outside of drafting. Not that Eichel is not awesome. I have seen him play.

McDavid is running away with 1st overall.

#6 - #10

6) Ivan Provorov

Ht/Wt: 6' 0"/191 lbs
Position: D
Team: Brandon (WHL)

A strong transitional blueliner…a smooth skater that keeps up with quicker opponents and can create some separation with a decent first step…very patient and poised with the puck…moves the puck in a way that will translate well at the next level… always makes forward progress when he is on the ice…shows good patience and purpose in his decisions…strong in the corners…hockey sense elevates the effectiveness of all his other abilities…a distributor of the puck that can head up a power play with great vision…steady and reliable at both ends. (December 2014)

A strong elusive skating puck carrier who is also great with his stick as a defensive weapon. This improving six foot skates head up with confidence great knee bend and drive, holding that extra second and always aware of all his passing options. Attacks with shake and bake head and body moves and gets by defenders on the attack. Reaches quickly on defense. Still needs polish defensively but has upside that will most certainly have his name called. A member of his homeland’s team roster for the World Junior Under-20 at Christmas 2014.

7) Lawson Crouse

Ht/Wt: 6' 3"/200 lbs
Position: LW
Team: Kingston (OHL)

So who is Lawson Crouse? Here is what I believe: Lawson Crouse is a power forward with good skills, a good work ethic and a willingness to do what it takes to win – the type of player all teams covet. What I am still unsure of is how much of a scorer Lawson will be at the NHL level. Is he that elite scorer that he showed at the Ivan Hlinka tournament where he tied for the lead in goals scored (six) with Brock Boeser of Team USA or is he a secondary scorer worthy of a second or third line. NHL scouts think highly of Lawson as Bob MacKenzie’s pre-season poll of ten NHL scouts has him fifth overall. I like him a lot but I am still uncertain what his scoring level will be. I am sure he will straighten it all out for me as the season progresses. Lawson has six points in his first eight games in this year’s OHL season.
Profile from: Eldon MacDonald of The Hockey Writers
- updated Oct. 19th

Lawson is a 'big' man who can impose himself on opponents and make it extremely difficult for them. He is a strong skater with a good burst of speed and if he has the slightest step on a defender, it is an almost impossible task to regain position vs. him. Good puck skills and is a smart player with and without the puck. Developing into the type of player that can be a force at the NHL level.

Analysis: Craig Button - TSNs Direct of Scouting - updated Sept. 25th

A big-bodied forward who gives opposing defenses headaches with his effort on the forecheck…tough to contain with his huge frame and strength…impossible to separate from the puck and consistently is successful winning pucks and generating scoring chances through his hard work…moves the puck well with good vision and passing skill…a strong net-front presence… has decent speed for his size, though he could improve his quickness…plays hard on defense; forces plays and takes away angles…uses his size to play physical, including laying some devastating hits…is a moose along the wall down low…tremendous potential going forward. (August 2014)

A big man with an excellent size/skating package. Gets in quickly and handles the forecheck and control the play along the boards. Can control things in the crease area, and has a big time heavy shot and release. Is strong on the puck, and gets through contact, and can drive the net. Very high hockey IQ, and anticipates the play well.

8) Mathew Barzal

Ht/Wt: 5'11"/174 lbs
Position: C
Team: Seattle (WHL)

Mathew Barzal is that Sam Reinhart (Buffalo – 2014 – 2nd overall) type thinker that outthinks his opposition. Mathew also possesses elite passing and stickhandling abilities. Mathew had a good Ivan Hlinka tournament where he helped bring the gold back to Canada with seven points and a plus five rating in five games. He also is looking good out of the gate in the WHL with eleven points in ten games.
Profile from: Eldon MacDonald of The Hockey Writers
- updated Oct. 19th

Difference maker may sum up Mathew. He not only wants to be one, he is one. Always in the 'guts' of the action and he has the puck so much during the course of a game. Smart and really understands what is unfolding and is both quick to take advantage yet patient to let it unfold. Exudes confidence and with a very good skill set, that confidence leads to productivity, both for him and the team.

Analysis: Craig Button - TSNs Direct of Scouting - updated Sept. 25th

A smart, creative player with a wide, strong, fluid stride…plays a 200-foot game…makes good decisions with the puck…has decent strength, and looks bigger than listed…shows flashes of dominating offensive skills, but need to do so with more consistency…not overly physical, but will engage in contact for the puck…shows his creativity, vision and playmaking ability on the power play…finds seams and open ice with his impressive senses...really doing well in his rookie WHL season…has high-end offensive NHL upside. (August 2014)

Creative player with excellent vision who skates well with a wide base and strong stride. Responsible 200 foot player whose seeps with offensive upside. He plays with speed and has a good understanding of utilizing all his resources in the attack zone.

9) Zack Werenski

Ht/Wt: 6' 1"/206 lbs
Position: D
Team: USA U18 NTDP (USHL)

Smart and reliable two-way defenseman…shows skill at both ends of the ice...is a good skater with a smooth stride and fluid movements...handles the puck well with decent hand-skill, good strength and some elusiveness with it as he moves through the neutral zone…makes a great first pass and outlet…has good poise and vision with the puck on his stick…has a decent wrist shot, which he'll take from the point…isn't overly physical on defense and he needs to play tougher and meaner than he does…has good reach and he uses his stick well to take away lanes and force players wide and off the puck…poised on defense and recovers well. (August 2014)

A fine all-around defensive prospect who displays all the qualities necessary to progress as an NHL defender. He is very mobile player who passes thread the needle on tight breakout passes. Smartly activates into the attack with explosion causing matchup problems for the opposition. Smart and gifted point man who effortlessly walks the blue line to open lanes on the PP. Excellent lateral mobility on dee. Closes down on the wall. He is going to need time and with improve gap control and hopefully add more aggression, using his big frame more. A member of his homeland’s team roster for the World Junior Under-20 at Christmas 2014.

10) Mikko Rantanen

Ht/Wt: 6' 4"/195 lbs
Position: C/RW
Team: TPS Turku (a) (SM-liiga)

The Finnish Bull likes to go the net like a big man should; he also likes to erase the graffiti of ugly defenseman along the walls. This kid has got “game” in him and has decent skills to boot. He too is off to a slow start with just five points in eleven games. He will have to pick it up if he wishes to remain in the top ten. However, I would not expect for him to fall far if he does at all as his big man game is just too attractive to most teams.
Profile from: Eldon MacDonald of The Hockey Writers
- updated Oct. 19th

A strong three-zone playmaker who is also defensively responsible…has an awkward upright skating stride, but gets from Point A to Point B just fine…not a big ”wow” factor to his game, but is a smooth, fluid, big-bodied forward who can be hard to handle…uses his strength and reach, along with his vision and hands, to protect the puck…has good instincts when to pass and when to hold…puck seems to follow him around the ice…good in his own zone and consistently makes himself available for a breakout pass…has impressive hockey sense and awareness…needs to work on his shot and add more muscle mass to his growing frame. (December 2014)

Displays a strong game on the wall and dominance below the circles. Has excellent vision, playmaking skills, and above average feet an effort in all three zones. He is very strong on the puck and uses his size to control play, bring havoc in the front and when he gets the puck it’s tough to get it from him, whether it is in the cycle or when he moves out off the wall. Seems very in control in his carries. He has solid jump and speed and the vision to find openings. If there was a knock it would be his low scoring totals so far. One could argue he wasn’t playing with pivot able to get him the biscuit. Others might say he lacks the high end soft and quick hands, foot speed and agility when passes are sent his way. He has spent time on IR, but is a very intriguing prospect. He was selected to the roster for the World Junior Under-18 Tournament in April and also was a member of his homeland’s team roster for the World Junior Under-20 at Christmas 2014.

@Podein25

Senyshyn looks like a real late riser...really his first season in junior, he's got size, speed   skill and apparently a good hockey head on his shoulders.

Sprong isn't even rated as a 1st rounder? He's got great skill and is tearing it up lately. But there might be some issues with him, he doesn't seem to give a crap when he doesn't have the puck.

I forgot all about Sprong. He was top-10 in most lists only a few months ago, no?

@Hockey Junkie   As it gets closer and closer to the draft, how exciting is it to be a hockey fan in Buffalo right now, huh???    If I was you, I'd be losing sleep wondering which superstar you are going to get. Think about it...assuming they finish last or second last...the worst they can do is Eichel or Hanfin...and either guy would be a slam dunk for #1 oveall if it were not for McEverything.

McDavid reminds me an awful lot of a former Sabre, namely GIlbert Perreault....in fact, the more I think about it, the more McDavid's skating style reminds me of Perreault....which is one of the highest complainants anyone can give a young future star...at least that's the way I think.

You are a few months away from having a 1-5 shot at the next Perreault....WOW....that is exciting. Whoever the pick is, I expect the Season Ticket base to explode AND there will be new found stability in a city with great, rabid fans....they deserve stability and a winner, they have suffered for quite a while. FINALLY, the Sabres have a GM who is smart and insists on building through the draft. It will take a while, but the end result will be worth the tedious journey to respectability. Their defense is already showing signs of looking quite mobile and effective. They badly need a #1 franchise center and all kinds of depth at the wings....AND a goalie of the future. Should they be lucky enough to land McGod.....a very nice second pick would be the goalie from Barrie McKenzie Blackwood, who is huge....6'4 and mobile. Those 2 picks alone would assure the Sabres of having their best draft ever.

@flyercanuck   Yep, Sam is gonna be a superb pick also. Needless to say, you just have to go BPA, especially up high in this kind of a draft. Could you imagine though, the unGodly haul they could get in return for selling off this pick?  They could swap picks with somebody like Carolina, still stay in the top 10 and get 2-3 first rounders and a NHL top 6 forward....and that would be just for starters, if a bidding war started....watch out....a team like Arizona could covet McDavid as somebody who could *literally* save the franchise there.

Finally you're starting to make sense Rick! Just when I was ready to give up....

Just kidding. In all seriousness, I'm with you in hoping that neither Toronto nor Arizona get it. I don't want Edmonton to get it either. Or Carolina. Or Jersey....

I'm looking forward to a McDavid - Johansen duo in Columbus for the next decade or so. Eichel will flee Arizona once he reaches UFA status.

@Hockey Junkie   GOOD GOD MAN....I never thought about the Leafs getting McDavid until just now.....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you, the Panthers have tried and tried....the NHL product is just not catching on there....BUT Gary will never admit defeat...just look at all the crap we have to put up with Arizona. The league friggin bought them so they would not leave the desert!!

There are much more deserving areas that would KILL for a team, that particular part of Florida simply has not and never will support the NHL....time to move on and get a rabid fan base a chance!!

Interesting take. Of course, being a Johansen owner in our keeper league NAHANA....I'd be ALL FOR this little scenario you have drawn up. You would have to think that McDavid, Johansen and Boone Jenner would make a WICKED first pp. That is one hell of a LOT of talent and nifty moves on the ice at once!!  Once they got to know each other tendency's......they would be virtually unstoppable. Having a talented guy like Jenner to retrieve pucks and maintain possession would really make that line click!!

Ok here is #11 thru #20 from http://www.mynhldraft.com/2015-draft/mock-draft/

#11) Timo Meier

Ht/Wt: 6' 1"/208 lbs
Position: RW
Team: Halifax (QMJHL)

Strengths

  1. Shot

  2. Offensive Play

  3. Scoring

Area’s For Improvement

  1. Defensive Play

  2. Protecting The Puck/Corner Battles

  3. Pass accuracy

Scouting Report: A winger with a great wrist and slapshot who loves to use it. His quick release makes it hard for goaltenders to track the shot. Uses all of his shot arsenal. Good first steps and speed but could be more agile. Has a good offensive mind and is always looking to put himself in a good shooting spot. Good play away from the puck in the offensive zone, though not in his own zone. Tends to make blind passes and turns the puck over too many times. Improved his physical play and is willing to use his body but still needs to use his size better in corner battles and while protecting the puck. Rather shoots than passes. Shows hockey sense and is making himself always available for a pass. His point production exploded this season and he elevated his game to a new level but this should be enjoyed with caution as he is on the teams most dominant offensive line together with 9th overall pick Nikolaj Ehlers.

NHL Potential: Sniper. Has a very good shot and isn't afraid to use it.

Wide bodied six foot Swiss winger whose improved feet and more robust play in the Q has him in the scout’s sights. Good battle zone player who needs further work on his acceleration and starts. Very skilled but still on the low end of the learning/development curve in terms of thinking the North American game and instinctively reacting. A work in progress who was a member of his homeland’s team roster for the World Junior Under-20 at Christmas 2014.

#12) Pavel Zacha

Ht/Wt: 6' 3"/200 lbs
Position: C/LW
Team: Liberec (CZE)

Pavel Zacha is that big-bodied center with separation speed, good hockey sense and passing ability that team’s drool over. He is still in the process of acclimatizing himself to the OHL (nine points in nine games) but when that process is over, watch out OHL. Zacha is trending upwards, playing a lot better the last couple of games).
Profile from: Eldon MacDonald of The Hockey Writers
- updated Oct. 19th

Pavel may draw comparisons to Eric Staal at the same age. He has excellent confidence playing with the puck in offensive situations and is a very dangerous offensive player. Skating is very good & he can get to open ice and beat defenders. Competes to contribute offense and he plays with a determination to make a difference. Like Eric Staal at this age, will only get better.

The top Czech prospect for the 2015 draft…a big boy who is pretty physical for his age…he will hit you because that's what he does…goes hard to the net and is relentless on the forecheck, which can be a scary sight for the opposing defensemen…has a strong shot that is both hard and accurate… good one-timer…prefers a shot to a pass…willing, but immature game defensively…goes back to defend the crease and knows how to use the stick in the defensive zone…good on PK where he gets his frame into lanes and just clears the puck when he gets the chance…patient player with good vision, soft hands and the ability to make one-on-one dekes…strong skater with good balance, but needs to get faster. (August 2014)

Big man who has a strong physical game, excellent hands and really good shot. Not the fastest guy at this point but very strong on his pins and well balanced, and uses his size and reach to wear down the opponents. Good in the battle areas and goes hard to the front. At this juncture prefers to hold the puck, try and deke out defenders and shoot than to look for linemates. His arrival in the OHL will be his chance to get better all around, and build an even stronger game., and he has shown solid performances at both ends. Plays major minutes, and despite not being a dazzling stickhandler, still manages to dominate and take opponents off the puck, with strong wall work. He plays strong on the puck and never stops working. Displays a quick release and hard heavy shot. He sees the ice, gets open and has at times, high end touch with his passes along with that vision. This unselfish team first player continues to improve his skating but, at this juncture, where his feet are may determine where he eventually gets selected. Can he improve and be a first line NHL player? That's the question. A member of his homeland’s team roster for the World Junior Under-20 at Christmas 2014.

#13) Travis Konecny

Ht/Wt: 5'10"/172 lbs
Position: C
Team: Ottawa 67's (OHL)

Travis has a blend of skill, physical play and determination that reminds one of Pat Verbeek. Like Pat, Travis can score and he can do so with a shot from out or determination around the net. He asserts physically and he does not get pushed off puck or out of his space and will punish opponents. Doesn't let himself be denied and he plays with smarts and an intensity that allows him to make a 'dent' in the game

Analysis: Craig Button - TSNs Direct of Scouting - updated Sept. 25th

A skilled forward who is a threat in all three zones…has great speed and quickness with tremendous feet and balance on his edges; great agility…very flashy with the puck, but smart…able to create space for himself with his quickness and his vision…impressive puck-distributing skills…moves the puck very well and is constantly able to set up his linemates with excellent chances…possesses a hard shot with a deceptive release…effort level is terrific each shift as he is a hard worker and high-compete player…hits, battles and plays hard defensively; always involved…fun player to watch and is already one of the OHL’s most dangerous scorers. (August 2014)

Another one of the top end elite skaters and puck movers in the class, with excellent edging, burst and agility. Has the ability to go into tight spaces and control the puck and dictate play. You will see him involved in all three zones, giving strong work ethic in his end and quick bursts to loose pucks or throw checks. His compete level is bigger than his stature so might see him getting bounced a bit along the wall in those puck battles. Simply takes no quarter. The lack of size might be an advantage when he pushes his way through crowds to reach scoring areas, receive passes, and take shots. A player who clearly has a quick release and deceptively strong wrist and snapshots, but is very comfortable distributing the puck and using his smarts to read and react to the defense with slick set-ups. There is much to like about this young man

#14) Nick Merkley

Ht/Wt: 5'10"/175 lbs
Position: C/RW
Team: Kelowna (WHL)

An offensive forward that makes an impact in the game every time he touches the puck…improved skater this season and possess more jump in his step…not big by any stretch but shows a willingness to throw his weight around…impressive hockey sense and ability to think the game…very creative and crafty with the puck…plays a complete 200-foot game…a strong playmaker with impressive vision and touch on his passes…willing to take the puck to the net…has an effective shot that is quick off his stick. (December 2014)

Undersized “Dub” centremen with good all around skills and edge. A good skater who can turn into the middle and dish. Very good player from behind the net, whose speed gives him opportunities as he come out. Started the 2014-15 season with league leading point / assist totals. Shorter but very thick. Very willing to get froggy for his team when they are down in a contest and they need some physical. His fireplug frame gives strong body contact and also absorbs the ones returned. A player we will be watching.

#15) Kyle Connor

Ht/Wt: 6' 1"/170 lbs
Position: C
Team: Youngstown (USHL)

A smart two-way forward who sets up his linemates with well-timed passes…is mature and intelligent with the puck, and does not rush a play no matter the pressure he is under…has impressive hands and vision, but it is the creativity and hockey sense that make him most dangerous…sees lanes opening and hits his targets consistently…also has a decent one-timer, but is definitely a pass-first guy… plays well away from the puck, constantly moving in order to get open…not overly physical…comes back deep into his own zone to make himself available…needs to add considerable strength, but the potential is there. (December 2014)

A responsible up and down centre-wing with excellent skating ability and feel for the attack zone. He is smart with the puck and his soft mitts allow him to hit linemates on the move, or put his hard shot on the net. Finds the open space and creates scoring chances. Has an extra gear that he can hit to get to that scoring lane. Is a patient puck-handler who can slow things down in order to break them open. Needs more credit for being a finisher, as he really can score, even though he is always willing to use his feet and then send a soft pass to a teammate. Not a hard nosed wall player but will engage. Smooth skating winger with soft hands and good instincts. His deceptive stride shows excellent acceleration which he uses to get by pairs of defenders and able to get of quality chances. When he shows more edge, intensity and activity in the high traffic areas we will be sold. Like so many youngsters, his defensive game is a work in progress. He does come back. He needs to get more overall strength and when that comes he will be not only more able to be physical but also a even stronger puck carrier. Was named to the USA Developmental team playing in the Ivan Hlinka Tournament the last two years . Was named to the U.S. World Junior A roster for the Junior A Challenge. Committed to the University of Michigan.

#16 Colin White

Ht/Wt: 6' 0"/175 lbs
Position: C/RW
Team: USA U18 NTDP

Strong, well-rounded, two-way center…one of the best skaters for this draft…great speed with an excellent stride and tremendous acceleration…moves quickly and is tough to handle when he hits top speed…has great strength on his skates and is tough to separate from the puck…battles hard for possession…drives the net and is strong in close…can beat a goalie in many ways…has a great shot and also distributes the puck well…a very hard worker with an edge to his game…great on defense with a great defensive stick and strong defensive-zone awareness…always in the right spots on the ice and he is a tremendous worker. (August 2014)

Possesses average size, but high end skills and smarts. Opportunistic scorer who can make plays at high speed with some edge. Moves well laterally, and has a quick stick to control loose pucks, and cause turnovers. Anticipates the pass and needs little time to unload his big-time shot. Possesses a quick release and superb accurancy with his shots. Top player on US Under-17 Team in the past. A solid forechecker and responsible two-way centre. Pressures the opposition and steals pucks that he quickly turns into scoring opportunities. Very strong on the puck because of his solid skating and balance. Projects as a NHL point producer.
Committed to Boston College.

#17) Thomas Chabot

Ht/Wt: 6' 1"/181 lbs
Position: D
Team: Saint John (QMJHL)

A strong passer who delivers pucks with good timing and accuracy…has the ability to read the play and pick-and-choose his spots…has a powerful stride that generates power but could improve the overall quickness in his feet…willing to join the offensive attack…handles the puck well…not a big point shot but gets it on net consistently…reads the play well in his own zone and defensively he has the size and reach to close off lanes…good transition defender that moves the puck up ice. (December 2014)

Athletic puck moving defender who has made big strides in a year in the QMJHL.

#18) Oliver Kylington

Ht/Wt: 6' 0"/180 lbs
Position: D
Team: Farjestads BK (SHL)

Just one look is all it should take to see that Oliver Kylington is poetry in motion – the ease and naturalness of his skating and passing are at the highest level. While his overall game, both offense and defense, has not yet reached the elite level that his physical tools would suggest, I am betting heavily that they will improve enough that Oliver Kylington will be drafted in the top ten and likely in the top five.
Profile from: Eldon MacDonald of The Hockey Writers
- updated Oct. 19th

The smooth skating Kylington was a regular in the Swedish Hockey league as a 16 year old player. Skating ability is excellent with an ease that allows him to beat the fore-check, transition from defense to offense and to jump into the offensive forays. Very good passer and his vision and smarts makes him a multiple threat because he can beat you multiple ways. Reminds one of former NHLer & fellow Swede, Calle Johansson.

Analysis: Craig Button - TSNs Direct of Scouting - updated Sept. 25th

Exceptionally poised, mature, two-way defenseman…handles the puck well and likes to join the rush…plays with impressive confidence and is absolutely fearless with the puck on his stick…doesn’t possess a bomb of a shot, but knows how to put the puck on target...quite impressive top speed and acceleration, especially in offensive situations…not overly big and has some defensive positioning issues to sort out…minute-munching ability as this kid just has ice water flowing through his veins. (August 2014)

Clearly one of the top end elite skaters and puck movers in the class. Has the ability to play in tight space and control the puck and play. Plays like he knows he has more ability than the rest of the ice, and is poised and composed in all phases when he gets a puck in his end. He is able to work out with smart passes or carry the mail with top acceleration. Good in his one end, and although not overly big framed, he have the stamina to fight through the rough going and excel. A member of his homeland’s team roster for the World Junior Under-20 at Christmas 2014.

#19) Jansen Harkins

Ht/Wt: 6' 1"/177 lbs
Position: C
Team: Prince George (WHL)

A highly intelligent two-way forward…skates well and will only get better with added strength…consistent and reliable…impressive in the faceoff circle…high-end defensive zone play due to his smarts, a long reach and positioning…has impressive vision and good puck skills…strong on the cycle…protects the puck well…possesses impressive playmaking skills and delivered pucks at proper times…not many holes in his game…has room to grow physically. (December 2014)

Total team player who does all the little things to help his team win. An unselfish centre
—Bill Placzek

#20 Yevgeni Svechnikov

Ht/Wt: 6' 1"/180 lbs
Position: LW
Team: Cape Breton (QMJHL)

Big body, excellent skater and passer, likes to swoop to the net like Valeri Nichushkin (Dallas – 2010 – 10th overall). Even with 18 points after 13 games, I don’t feel we have seen anywhere near the best from this player yet.
Profile from: Eldon MacDonald of The Hockey Writers
- updated Oct. 19th

A powerful and skilled forward…has great strength and balance on his skates…decent speed and agility, but not a real burner…has the creativity and hands to skate the puck through defenders and then power his way to the net…has a heavy shot that when it hits its mark, is pro caliber…uses his strength and long reach to protect the puck well…not much of a defensive game at this point…goes through long stretches where he is ineffective or downright invisible…can be physical, but also undisciplined…has great upside, but some bust potential as well. (December 2014)

Big bodied Russian import who hands and feet can at times make him a dominant player in games. Has a good shot and feet. Possesses a big frame that has room for more weight. A member of his homeland’s team roster for the World Junior Under-20 at Christmas 2014.   —Bill Placzek—

#21 Daniel Sprong

Ht/Wt: 5'11"/175 lbs
Position: RW
Team: Charlottetown (QMJHL)

Strengths:
1. Passing
2. Offensive Play
3. Hockey Sense

Area’s For Improvement
1. Defensive Play
2. Strength
3. Needs to shoot more often.

Scouting Report: A good, agile skater with fast first steps and great speed with the puck, able to move in different directions unexpected. Likes to go one on one and possess slick hands and puck handling skills. Has a great overview to set up plays with his accurate and strong pass. He doesn’t need a lot of space to make plays and shows great patience with the puck. Still needs to gain strength and doesn’t show a lot of physical game. Needs to use his powerful wrist shot more often and sometimes tends to try too much with the puck on his stick. Doesn’t panic when under pressure, though. Sprong is a player who always gets things going and doesn’t shy away from making plays. Shows hockey sense in many of his shifts and can make a difference on and off the ice in favour of his team.

NHL Potential: Playmaker. Has a very good overview and great accurate pass to setup plays.
Profile from: Dennis Schellenberg - updated Jan. 25th of Scouting-Factory.Blogspot.ch

A strong offensive player…he’s quick and extremely involved in every play…an explosive player who can create chances out of nothing…strong skater and very slick hands…a wicked shot and can snipe top shelf...not easily pushed around, but still does need to add strength to truly dominate…he’s adaptable and able to find ways to make an impact in every game...defense needs to come along and he isn't very physical, but his offensive skill set will make him a game breaker at the pro level…at times, he shows some real initiative in his own zone though, blocking shots and breaking up plays…works his butt off both on and off the ice to improve his game. (December 2014)

An undersized winger who can make it rain on the power play. Shifty and opportunistic and strong on his skates. Slips away and finds the soft spot and wants the puck. Exceptional athlete who despite an undersized frame will not be taken off the puck. Although he may not project as high as a second line contributor, he has been his team’s key PP player, because he set up teammates with cross-ice feeds as well as having one terrific shot. Don’t make the mistake of thinking he can’t beat you from many areas with his deadly shot and exceptional set-ups, because he will. The questions will come as what exactly is his high-water mark.

have a good vision of play, speed and great hand very good with the puck he lack of back check he dosen t make a real effort to get back in the zone and get the puck back he really need to improve on this matter.really good offensive player but more defense from him would make him a player that every nhl team would like

#22 Paul Bittner

Ht/Wt: 6' 4"/201 lbs
Position: LW
Team: Portland (WHL)

Paul Bittner is yet another big physical power forward who is not afraid of traffic or playing in front of the net. He also has the skating, vision and passing skills to accentuate his big-bodied physical presence. Paul had an excellent pre-draft year. His ES 60 of 2.8 was tied for third best of first year 2015 draft eligible players in the CHL (the others being, Lawson Crouse and Tyler Soy). Like his Portland Winterhawks team, Paul is off to a slow start with just three points in nine games. However, he is getting his chances. He had two breakaways in the US Top Prospects game but just couldn’t bury them. Paul just has too much talent not to break out from his slow start.
Profile from: Eldon MacDonald of The Hockey Writers - updated Oct. 19th

Big, long good skating winger who is smart and can make very good plays. Paul will attack with his speed but has the awareness to make plays off of it after he has created room. Good shot and will jump into openings quickly to take advantage. He is a winger who makes it very hard on defenders because he asserts with his size, not in a punishing manner, but in an imposing one.

Analysis: Craig Button - TSNs Direct of Scouting - updated Sept. 25th

A big body that is hard to move…possesses a powerful stride that is hard to stop once he gets going…wide skating base allows him to bull his way around the ice and power through his checks…shows some decent hockey sense and awareness…possesses decent vision and quick hands…has room to add some serious muscle to his already impressive frame…has a long reach…physical play could be ramped up…still learning the defensive game, and is raw, but talented, in aspects…combination of size, hands and vision could make him a formidable offensive force in the future. (August 2014)

Lanky winger with plenty of potential. Was named to the USA Developmental team playing in the Ivan Hlinka Tournament. Emerging Western League winger with great size, strength and solid skills. Displays prototypical size, along with toughness and a strong shot. Displays a wide skating base with powerful stride that will give the opposition fits as adds even more muscle. Projects as a power forward excellent feet for a big man. A strong skater with a powerful stride making him difficult to check. He effectively creates space and read the set-ups well from the neutral in. Keeps his feet going on the wall and corners. Plays on the special teams effectively. Possesses tremendous smarts, vision, mobility, maturity, and over-all skill set that may apart from much of the class as time goes on.Has good awareness and hockey smarts and excellent vision, a long reach that combined with his above average hands project as

#23) Jakub Zboril

Ht/Wt: 6' 1"/184 lbs
Position: D
Team: Saint John (QMJHL)

Jakub is a very good skater with an ease that affords him the opportunity to be very effective defensively and offensively. Very smart and poised with the puck where he can make plays that create opportunity and alleviate pressure. He plays all situations in the game with a strong understanding of what is unfolding and finds ways to be a contributor in some form or fashion as required.

A good two-way blue liner…plays a complete game and relies on his impressive footwork to maintain defensive coverage as well as put himself into the offensive play…has a good top speed and all-round mobility…has a dangerous point shot that is both accurate and hard…has a physical element to his game and will step up to make a hit…clears the crease and separates opponents form the puck with his body in the defensive zone…has an active stick…good upside as an all-round NHL defender. (December 2014)

Emerging defenseman with good size/skill ratio. Displays excellent vision as a first year player in the "Q" who has superb four direction skating ability. Very elusive when carrying, and really good at closing the gaps when defending. Has shown he can ride attackers to the wall and check them hard when away from it. Poised and quick to make that accurate pass in transition. Is smart and patient on the PP where he makes use of his hard low shot, or move the biscuit to the option. Still learning and far form the polished player on the backline. He still has mishandles and lapses in judgement due to bad positioning and sloppiness I will defer to his newness to the higher competition. Needs a stronger commitment and full game commitment, but there's much to like.

#24) Brandon Carlo

Ht/Wt: 6' 5"/198 lbs
Position: D
Team: Tri-City (WHL)

Brandon Carlo is an industrious, shift-by-shift defenceman who lets the game come to him. He doesn't chase the play and is able to quickly adapt to the pace of the game on the fly. Through maneuvering his way around the ice and making high-percentage, skilled decisions in all three zones, he is able to shut opposition offense down before it begins to take shape. Carlo is a smooth skater who can control the puck very well and get into open areas for scoring chances. That being said, he does and will need help finding offense due to his natural defensive style of play. All-in-all, a towering, defensive d-man that has very few holes in his game and is physically ready to make the next step.
Profile from: Curtis Joe of Eliteprospects - updated Feb. 27th

An absolute monster out on the ice and skates extremely well for his size…a good powerful skating stride and displays good lateral mobility…a mean, nasty, physical player… looks to jump up into the rush and push the offensive pace…possesses a hard shot and does a good job getting himself into shooting positions…good offensive instincts to go with his skating and snarl…ability to make some big body checks…a big minute muncher who plays both sides of the puck…physically he is almost NHL ready. (December 2014)

Projections have a lot to do with selections. When teams see a Colorado-born six foot five defender who handles the defensive side quite well they all look forward to a emerging offensive side to go along with that 200 foot smarts he displays. Very slight for his height, he has plenty of room to grow into a player who can take on into a bigger role. A team will call his name and wait to see if his hockey IQ helps spawn a bigger offensive presence. A member of his homeland’s team roster for the World Junior Under-20 at Christmas 2014.

#25) Jake DeBrusk

Ht/Wt: 5'11"/171 lbs
Position: LW
Team: Swift Current (WHL)

Jake DeBrusk, son of former NHLer Louie DeBrusk, is a mature, intelligent winger. He reminds me a lot of the way Daniel Sedin plays; he can make plays happen, using his creative passing ability, or he can be dangerous with a sneaky little shot. Where he and D. Sedin differ is that he can grind it out in the corners, and he is also able to play extremely well without the puck.

He is a shy player in the locker room, but he has confidence beyond his age on the ice. His linemates benefit from the style of game he brings, which is a high-tempo, playoff-type mentality; this can catch the opposition sleeping sometimes, and he puts up points utilizing his strengths. When he is on the ice, you can definitely sense the youth, excitement and energy he brings to the table.

Assets:

  Incredibly High Hockey IQ; Thinks the Game at a High Level

  Creativity with the Puck

  Play without the Puck

  Makes his Linemates Better

  Workhorse; Hard-nosed Work Ethic

  High-Tempo, Energy-Based Scoring
What He Needs To Work On:

  Size & Conditioning

  Consistency

  Fine-tuning his individual skills: he is a raw talent; he must work on his individual skills (ex. shot, hands, skating) to make a difference at the next level

Who He Reminds Me Of:

  Daniel Sedin

  Tommy Wingels

  Joffrey Lupul

  Tyler ToffoliWhere Will He Go?

  Late 1st -> Early 3rd Round


Profile from: Curtis Joe - updated Nov. 4th

A strong skater with good acceleration and speed…son of former NHLer Louie…drives the net with the puck and is dangerous in and around the circles…creates chances with his speed off the rush…an aggressive guy who attacks the net…has both a hard wrist shot and a good release…gets himself into open pockets around the net…works hard and grinds along the walls…a work in progress defensively but the tools are there…has a nice edge to his game. (December 2014)

Displays improving offensive upside to his aggressive style. Will cut to the front and beat defenders wide. Loves to crash the net. Has a wide skating base and he holds his ground in the paint. He isn’t a slick stick-handler or strong finisher at this juncture, but there is much to like that is already in place.
