Flyers Qualify Del Zotto

Yes he did have that right but it may punch his ticket out of town which is the teams right...

All depends on what the arbitrator sees as a fair market value for his services.  If he gets more through this arbitration than what the Flyers are willing to pay, then yeah, I would agree that this past season may have been the last one for him in the Flyers' uniform.

This is a contract i expect MDZ to sign close in age Barrie 23 MDZ 24. Close in production numbers as well.

Something like this i would think be good for both sides.

2014-15 $2,000,000

2015-16 $3,200,000

Maybe $2.5 this year, $3.5 for next for a caphit of $3....and maybe the Flyers could throw in a girlfriend, so he doesn't need as much money for pornstars.

That would work for me a slight bump from the Barrie contract since he does have 7 years in the NHL but it should be slightly team friendly since they did give him a chance. If not well they just can afford him and will have to ship him off to somewhere like Arizona or Florida....

Something interesting on the deal....

The side which didn't elect arbitration is the side which gets to select the term of the deal the arbitrator will decide.

MDZ was the elector so it’s the team’s call.

I'd look at a 2-3 year term.

Seems like the hardest part of this is just looking at what the current Dmen on the Flyers make and then trying to justify paying MDZ say less than Luke...hard to do.

I wouldn't think $3.6M is entirely out of line for MDZ.

But if that's the case, how about a 3Y deal with $7M in up front signing bonus and around $1M salary for three years? Does MDZ bite on that before the hearing?

In no case may a club walk away from an arbitration award arising from a hearing for which they filed. Walk-aways are only permitted in player-elected arbitration cases.

Right, I'm not saying walk away, I was saying get a deal done before the hearing.

Is around $3.5M a good benchmark for MDZ at this point? Especially with a HUGE up front bonus payment?

I think it's fair hard not to give him that and Luke is making 3.6mill.

True, but Hexy didn't sign for or trade for Luke.

If we start basing things on what Holmgren and Burke did... :hocky:

I wasn't....i was just trying to pay him close to what one of his young teammate is making...if i was going to base it off what Homer did then i would have compared him to the fine outstanding deal Mcdud signed 5 mill AAV!!!!

Yeah, that's pretty much where I am at, too.

Take $7M now, $1.167M a year for three and let's go home.

They won't make it to arbitration. Both sides are too smart to do that and they know what's ask risk if arbitration is on the docket. Hextall knows that Del Zotto is young, can fit in with the young defenders currently in the system and will probably be a great example to those guys about getting too much too soon. Del Zotto knows that the Flyers gave him a chance when no one else would, arbitration burns that bridge that was built by a good faith gesture and at the first opportunity, Hextall moves him to some club where he probably won't fit in. As well, you can bet that if the Flyers are out of the playoffs by February, Streit becomes a very valuable trade piece and Del Zotto slides nicely into Streit's role. I'm confident a deal is done by the weekend or Monday at the latest. And agreed about the big upfront bonus, but the smaller years in the back end.

Del Zotto signed a multi year contract no $ figures yet.http://flyers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=775050

I heard a 2 year deal for just over 7 mil.

figures are out now, it's 2 years, 7.75.   That seems kinda high, was this a good move?   They do have a LOT of D men...does this signing make it 8 now?  Hard to see any of the young kids make the squad unless they can unload a few more D.

Del Zotto is still a young guy himself, so i think this was a good deal all around... of the 7 "NHL defensmen" on the roster, for me he's the best player of the bunch, the contract goes for two years in which time he can play his way into the Striet leadership role ...and sign another decent deal or play himself off the team.  the term was wise, no one is "locked in" .  i was pleased.
