Game #16 - Capitals at Flyers - Nov 12 2015 - 7:00 ET

What killed the Flyers was special teams.

...their best players.   I believe out of those first 3 PP the Flyers only had 1 shot on net.   The effort was better than against Colorado, but their execution is still pathetic. They can't pass.  I can't give them credit for effort and execution if they can't put more points on the scoreboard than their opponents.

This was hard to watch.  I think the VanDeVelde line is the only one earning its keep.  The D is letting players get behind it with regularity. It reminds me of the Rathje/Hatcher days.  Where is Lasse Kukkonen when we need him?  It is bad..very bad.

I would like to think that Hakstol will be given time to grow with a team.  But I wonder if he will be let go after another embarrassment or two?

Howie

I need to add Ryan White (an Nuevirth) to those earning his keep.  White always gives 100%.  Hard on the forecheck, blocking shots, etc.

I have come to the point where I watch something else on TV and then have the game on my ipad on mute and look down every so often to see what is going on in the game.

I was surprised to see the Flyers scored 2.  Nice shot by Laughton!

But, really, how can it be this bad?

The top line has played together for the better part of two seasons coming in - and now they can't play?

What's Couturier doing out there - has he forgotten how to play? Is "second line center" too much for him?

If this team wants to quit - fine. Just stop collecting your paychecks and walk away.

And, on that note, I will be a broken record about this, but Lecavalier has to go after this season ends (if not before by some miracle). He had the second least ice time of anyone on either team and the guy he beat for Washington - Michael Latta - had a five minute major, a shot on goal, two hits and was 6 of 9 at the faceoff dot. VLC managed all of one faceoff win.

The sad thing is that Voracek managed just two more shots and one more hit than VLC in almost twice the ice time. Oh, and was -1 with a giveaway as well.

This team is sadly - SADLY - lacking in heart and just seems to fall to pieces at the first sign of adversity.

"It could have been 3-1 and suddenly it's 4-2" - they say. Ho hum. Oh well.

Dear OTP:

You are so right...the guy is an inspiration..great work ethic, stands up for teammates. He is a keeper.

On a related note--the Inquirer has an article related to trading Giroux.  I guess they read this board. The gist is simple--get what we can for him because the rebuild will take longer than his prime.

I think we're in for quite a rough patch.  The pieces aren't fitting.  I don't think Hakstol can wave a wand and makes things better.

I will never understand that contract.

You and me both rad.... this is truly a Homeresque deal that reeks of the old school flyers stupidity. Yet, most around here believe Hextall is a genius. This contract, mark my word, be equivalent to Homers worst signings...

Definitely puzzling. To his credit, Giroux is still producing. It's the other two stiffs that aren't. Raffl is not a top line NHLer.

Couturier is not a 2nd line center. Yes, he's 22 (23 in a few weeks), but he's played 300 NHL games, and is in his 5th season. Twice as many games as his junior career. He's settling in to a 3rd line, 40-45pt guy. Probably 50 at his peak. Nothing wrong with that. He's great at what he does defensively, so why take him away from that?

This team is sadly - SADLY - lacking in heart and just seems to fall to pieces at the first sign of adversity.

So I ask you honestly, does Calgary also lack heart? Colorado? Columbus? Carolina?

Or are they just bad hockey teams?

Is there really not enough skill to possess the puck on the rush ?  when you're slow from either genetics or just having had your ass kicked at practice the day before...is dump and chase really a 'smart" play ?

good grief, how about making a move keep the puck on your stick , shield a check with your body...this team is really playing some stupid boring hockey.

win a stinkin' face off Brayden,  you too Sean, damn, chasing everything all the time , no wonder they look gassed.

this group is difficult to watch, passes to no one, wrap arounds to vacated points, dumping the puck to the opposite side of the ice as the lead forechecker...

healthy scratch Voacek, let him watch a game tell him to quit pressing, he's working hard but can't get out of his own way.  get raffl off the top line, put Schenn back on Couturier's wing if Sean must be the 2C... i don't know some things seem pretty obvious to a middle aged fan i have to think the brain trust can see them too.

Talk about being between a rock and a hard place....not enough talent to score on the rush....not enough physicality or desire to play the cycle game...this team is downright stinky.

Yes, Homer messed up that timing with trading for AMac and signing VLC.  It was a complete miscalculation coming out of the buy outs for Briere and Bryz.  However in 3 years G will be 30/31 or something like that.  That is not too far out of his prime.  I don't think his play will drop off the map like Mike Richards.  I think if G was 29 now then a trade would make more sense.  I understand the article but it is premature IMHO unless it is for the 1st overall in this coming draft.

I don't watch them much. I watch the Flyers.

This team folds tents faster than Boy Scouts after a Jamboree.

But, for the record, yes, Carolina is a bad hockey team. And they may beat the Flyers twice in the next two weeks...

And, of course, Colorado and Calgary have both beaten the Flyers in the past two weeks...

The Flyers have some problems - no doubt™ - but they should IMO be better than they are playing.

I don't think any GM in his right mind would give up Austin Matthews for a 28 year old Giroux. That is a great way to get fired.

I was waiting to see some more criticism going Couturier's way - and rightfully so. However I don't think playing with Read and Simmonds is doing him any favors.  Read is playing like a dime a dozen 3 liner and the only time Simmonds should touch a puck would be in front of the opposition's net.

I agree with that. And he is "coming off of injury"

I don't mind him at all as a 3rd line defensive specialist - and think that if he's a 15+ goal scorer with 40+ points that his contract is just fine in that role.

Now, who plays second line center now that VLC, BSchenn and Couturier all seem to have failed to fill the role envisioned?

Read's game disappeared when he signed his contract... Coincidence?

It's clear Homer saddled us with some really wicked contracts that will haunt us for years.  OK, maybe we keep G.  Fine.  But other than White, Laughton, our Goalies, and Coots, I am wondering, like Schwarzeneger, if this is "The Expendables?"  I agree with others that firing Hakstol would be scapegoating of the worst kind.

I am wondering if Luukko's departure meant more than was given...maybe he saw the handwriting on the wall and didn't want to be around...or maybe he was not as much of a yes man as others?

Peace,

Howie
