Holmgren was a genius and here is why...

Without having to trade any 2nd round picks or signing a huge NTC contract extension he singlehandedly brought in the catalyst that will give the O&B a solid chance at getting McDavid.  This was not a stroke of luck but rather one of pure genius.

The timing of the move was perfect - knowing the flyers would be at their worst early in the 20014-15 season.  Holmgren knew Chief's "work and compete harder" system was perfect for a group of young players.  Knowing Chief would implement a breakout system which would start with all 5 flyers looking like a novice squad sitting in a box all within 20 feet from Mason resulting in multi injuries from blocked shots and getting outshot almost every night is the stuff of legends.  Of course not even Holmgren could predict the O&B's success on the PP but he did try everything he could to ensure McDavid would be a Flyer.

And the last thing Holmgren did was to call in a favour of one time Flyer Garth Snow.   Homer was quick to send a 2nd and a 3rd for Andrew MacDonald.  Homer was faster to give the now beloved AMac a 6 year extension and then rode of into the sunset providing Hextall a roadmap to McDavid.

It all becomes clear now reading between the lines of Homer's comment that Berube is one of the greatest minds in hockey  he knew.

Lol, great post. Holmgren managed (without thinking of course) to put Hextall in the same situation that Clarke put him in during the 2006/07 season when he took over the gm position. You know a slow defense, stupid long-term contracts and a shitty start to the season. Hopefully Hexie can work some magic and get rid of some of these players.
