Flyers sign Chris Porter

The Flyers have inked forward Chris Porter to a one year deal.

The University of North Dakota alum played in 27 games (including postseason) with the Blues last season: 1 G, 2 A (53.4 SAT%)

The contract is two way, so he’ll be paid less with the Phantoms.

Porter (31), a round nine pick in 2003, has spent his entire career with the St. Louis organization (signed in 2007).

Chris Porter has bounced between the AHL and the Blues for most of his player lifetime.

In 173 NHL games, Porter has 11 goals and 16 assists (27 points).

The 6’1″ 206 pound left wing missed two months with a leg injury at the start of 2015 and was a frequent healthy scratch.

Looks like a solid depth signing for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

_____________

Phantom depth / injury call up. Don't you think?

Organizational depth signing... 2hy anyone question this is ridiculous. Time to start building depth on the farm. This is what Hextall does best and did the same in LA...

Guy has NHL time and can help out down in the A. Nothing more...

I wouldn't, but I don't think it's an apt comparison. It was funny, though.

Aside from being somewhat successful college coaches with no previous pro experience showing a potential bias towards players from their college programs?

Jury's still out on both.

Aside from that.  And neither coached at Oregon State, so there's that too.

By the way, for whatever reason, I wasn't thinking Hakstoll.     I was thinking the comparison was Hextall/Kelly.

This guy certainly fills a role and a need in today's style of hockey, but it's a shame that all he needs to do is take up some time on  the ice in order for the talented guys to rest a bit.  It's the nature of the beast but back in the golden age of the 80's and early 90's more was expected from 4th liners than to just stay out of trouble and eat up some time on the clock.

I think that is because of the switch from all out offense to at least paying attention to defense. Current coachs want and demand the 4th line to impose their will physically, but first and foremost, keep the puck out of their net. Most coaches that get this simple thing consider anything else gravey. The 80's had so much offensive depth, that it spilled into the bottom six. In general, the strategy has changed due changes in how pts are awarde.... it brought in a defensive shell to try and take at least the single point.....and that sucks..
