Can't say enough what a job hextall has done turning this franchise around.

Agreed. Out of all his moves so far I think the most significant was drafting Provorov. Other GMs might not have at #7. I'm not saying it was a tough one. Easy actually. But it's still the most important. He's a future Norris winner.

I'm so ready to see these kids come up to the big show. Move on from Bellemare and Vandevelde and let the jack rabbits like Martel and Leier get full time spots in the bottom six. Let them use their speed to drive the opposition nuts.

We know Morin and Sanheim will be in Philadelphia soon and that's going to be something to watch. I read a post on another site that someone said Sanheim has been a disappointment in Lehigh Valley, but Sanheim has been a revelation. He and Morin have effectively become the shut down pairing. More important, Sanheim gets very little power play time and if he did, I think he'd be one of the AHLs leading scoring defenseman. Right now, his defensive game comes first and it's coming along very well. As for Morin, he'll never be a scorer, but he'll certainly be a nasty, mean SOB on the blueline in the mold of Derian Hatcher and he's going to give the opposition fits.

I'm so excited for the future. There's such an abundance of depth now that players are going to be forced to be at their best as there's someone behind them waiting. Great way to run an organization.

@BobbyClarkeFan16 Bellemare is a great 4th line player with a cheap contract, Vandy can be easily replaced but  you cant have a 4th line full of tiny guys like Martell. You need a balance of speed and size and some shutdown guys. Martel is useless as a 4th liner and probably has no chance of ever making the Flyers since he will not beat out any of the top line wingers we have. What we really need are a few more big scoring wingers. Martell is a little Tinkerbelle and Leier is just a third line checker.  We desperately need some finishers. Leier, Cousins and Raffl are all similar, they work hard but none of them have great offensive skill. We have too many "hard workers" we need some goal scorers. I just don't see Martel making an impact

I agree with the pornstar i bring Bellemare back and let Van de velde walk.

Guys on the Phantoms can replace him. Leier, Laughton or maybe Martel (maybe 3rd line role when needed) might be ready.

I actually like our 4th line. As @Howie58 said, they have consistently done their job. If we dump PEB and VV and replace them with little fast guys with some more skill, we would quickly miss their size.

VV is boring, but he is big and he gets on the puck. I'd like him to have some more skill, I'd like him to generate more scoring chances, but mostly I want him to do what the 4th line is currently doing. Heavy on the forecheck, hard on the D, firm on the puck.

Scott Laughton (6-1 190) can take Vandy's (6-2 190) spot on the line plus he'll add more speed...and well if he can't then yeah i guess you can call him a bust.

But a 4th of Belly-Scotty-Luby would make a good line. Plus Laughton could play up if need be.

I'm perfectly content using guys like Martel and Leier in the bottom six. They bring speed, they bring tenacity, they have skill and they've shown they're willing to do what ever it takes to win. I could care less about the size factor. I keep hearing size, size, size and I was around when the Flyers drafted big stiffs or traded for them. Size doesn't mean skill and that's usually what the Flyers acquire when htey get size. Look no further than former number 2 overall pick James Van Useless. The guy should have been a 40 goal scorer here. But he never used his size, was lacksadaisical in his play and was as soft as butter. Useless. I could go on and on about size, but if you've been a fan for at least 20 years, you'll know that that was Clarke's MO and we all know how his lust for size turned out.

I just want something different because the bottom six lines have been constructed the same for an extended period of time now and what they have simply doesn't work. I'm content with trying something new because it can't be any worse than what we've seen.

I almost always agree with you Bobby, but in this case I don't, at least not as the 4th line goes. I know you're talking bottom 6 generally, but I want a 4th line that is fast and heavy. One gritty smaller guy is OK, but not 3. I want one line that simply pounds the other team's D for 12-14 min a night.

It's cool. I can respect that. I'm just of the opinion that with my fourth line, I want them to skate the hell out of the opposition. It'd be nice to see an opponent for once pinned in their own zone because they can't overcome the speed that's coming at them. That's why a guy like Martel intrigues me in the bottom six. We know he has good hands, there's chippiness to him and there's blazing speed to burn. Honestly, this is a guy who could be the that waterbug that just gives the opposition fits because they can't catch him and he's an annoying little bug that will just skate circles around everyone. The Vandeveldes, the Bellemares, etc...they don't have the speed that Martel brings and I think it's an element, that if used properly, can catch teams off guard.

Fair enough. Is he any good at faceoffs? 'Cause that's the other thing: a center who is a regular 60%+ is essential. Maybe Laughton becomes that guy. Which would be fine. Maybe the Jets would trade Lowry? He's not fast really but he's getting good on draws and hits everything in sight HARD. Put some speedy pests on the wings and I could live with that.

@BobbyClarkeFan16, JVR maybe is somewhat of a disappointment, but he would certainly be our first line winger today. He is also on pace for 30 goals. As far as giving up size for speed, if it comes down to a big guy with speed over a small guy, I'll take the bigger guy. Playoffs are a grind and you need some toughness to get through. Every time we go out west and play big tough teams like Anaheim, we get pushed all over the ice.

You don't have to go out west just check last year versus the Caps their size was grinding on the Flyers and it was obvious.

Our 4th line needs a physical presence on it. Actually, the entire team needs an increase in physicality up front and I don't see anywhere internally where that will come from

Carson Twarynski is certainly a physical player. So too is Connor Bunnaman. Wade Allison is also a physical player. All three are 6'3 and 200+ pounds as well. Those are some big kids that will be coming to the club soon.

In the meantime, it's time that the guys with size start using their size. I'm not looking at Simmonds because he's a physical dude. I'm looking at Voracek and Couturier to start throwing their weight around.

I'm also looking forward when Morin gets into the lineup because he's going to make life hell for a lot of teams. He and Gudas should be a fun tandem to watch in the future (although gut feeling says Morin gets paired with either Sanheim or Gostisbehere).

So there's size on the way. It might be 3 to 4 years away, but there's size coming none the less. Oh, and you can add in Oskar Lindblom as a physical presence. He might only be 6'1, 190, but he's very physical along the boards. The size will be on it's way shortly.

Then what do we do for the next 3-4 years? We need forwards that can play physically now. We are an extremely soft team up front (and on the blueline for that matter). Simmonds can be. But neither Voracek nor Couturier have ever really thrown their weight around. We need forwards that will pound the body after every time the other team's players move the puck. That's why the other teams has such an easy time bringing the puck out of their zone. Our bottom 6 may be the softest in the league. Cousins, VdV, and Weiss...3 players that really add nothing to the bottom-6. VdV at least kills penalties, but aside from that, nothing. They don't hit, they don't create plays, they don't take face-offs and they don't score many goals.

Was Weal ever tried on Giroux's line at any point during his limited on-ice opportunities last season? Kid seems too good for the AHL and may be the finisher G's line has been lacking.

Sami:  Weal's lack of play at the big league tells me he is a perennial AHLer.  I suspect he is viewed as too small. That is one man's guess.
