I also needed a place to share Neuvirth's cool new helmet even if he doesn't get the starting role.

Not quite. There are quite a few players who are "injured". I agree most of the best players will be there, but almost no one has their best team, due to Team North America and Team Europe. I'm just not sure that the effort will be there. We'll see I guess.

The "World Cup" is nothing but a blatant money grab hidden under national flags.  What a joke.  It annoys me that players feel compelled to play under the guise of nationalism and it does nothing but take them away from their team commitments. I understand the Olympics every four years.  But this is pointless.

Team Sweden will now be without Zetterberg and Kronwall.  Kronwall was previously replaced by Hampus Lindholm and now Zetterberg will be replaced by Mikael Backlund.  Zetterberg states that he isn't 100% healthy.

LOL. The tournament nobody wants to play in and the NHL would rather doesn't exist. Players are jumping off the bandwagon everywhere. Nobody wants to get injured or aggravate an injury. Young players have to play against their own home countries. Nobody gets to play their real, best team.

I wonder how much body contact there will be. I'm betting this will be the last one of these we see and I'm not disappointed at all. What a joke.

Curious that the NHL would rather the tournament not exist, given that they are the ones who organized it.

And, according to the NHL, they plan on having this run every four years on an ongoing basis.

Now, I agree that it's silly and players are risking injury - potentially career-ending - by playing in it. But you do have players like Johnny Gaudreau who is planning to play despite not being under contract.

I guarantee this tourny will produce some excellent hockey. Maybe even better than the Olympics, because it's NHL rules, so some wicked hitting. I'm betting if a player dominates this tourny he could turn that into a very nice contract....after all, if you stick out against the best in the world, you can make a case for more money. Those who think this thing is a rip off,, you will be shocked.

I can't even wrap my head around who will be at center for Canada....Crosby is a lock for 1st line, Toews a lock for 2nd....pretty sure Bergeron will be the 3rd line center....then the 4th line is a contest between Getzlaf, Tavares, Thornton or Giroux....that is just sick.

They sucker these kids into thinking its national pride so they can't say no.  I hate it.

I hear that - but the NHLPA is firmly behind both this and the Olympics and I don't think the NHLPA is dominated by the "kids."

The players in general want to play for their countries - just as they do in soccer and basketball.

I am pleased to see guys with even relatively minor injuries deciding against participating. Wouldn't surprise me at all if Bettman and his cronies start with "penalties" a la guys skipping the All Star Game

Heck, Johnny Gaudreau plays in a charity tourny in South Jersey every year. There's no checking, but it can still be physical, and there are 3-5 games per team over a single weekend. I think there were 15 or so AHL/NHL guys in it this year, including Ghost and Stolarz. Hexy was holding his breath.

Rooting for Finland and Europe.

ha ha....saw that...this is what, Andersen's 8th injury in the last year and a half?  A good goalie, but given his past history, the Leafs really stuck their collective necks out here. Signed for 5 years at 5 mill a year...they had better hope and pray this guy is not as injury prone as he looks.

I'm gonna go ahead and guess you are the lone vote for Finland?  ha ha..

If anyone is interested, it appears most of the goalies have purchased brand new masks for this tourny....some are very cool.....don't know what to make of the Pac-Man tribute though....lol.

https://www.nhl.com/news/world-cup-goalie-masks-revealed/c-281487018?tid=278386054

Rumor has it, Gibson's Pac Man mask was created to show what he will do to the nahana opponents set to face the Windsor Warriors. Yes...that is a tip...holtby AND Gibson will indeed be Warriors next season....2 of the 5 keepers will be goalies....an act of necessity as I see it....a real life Goalie shortage is coming to our fair league....lol.

I'm interested.  First of all, I miss watching hockey, as I'm not a big TV or movie fan, secondly, this is the best of the best with respect to talent, and I also enjoy watching teams play for their countries colors.  I hope the tournament is a success.  That said as I look through the list of rosters I can't help but root for the North America team. (Will they play "God Bless America" as their anthem?"  I'm curious as to how well their speed plays in their game plan.  I'm also curious to see how well Couturier plays with talented speedy wingers, will he drive to the net at all or will he just pass the puck and stay off on the perimeter.  Team USA I think has the best Goaltending, however, I think a top three finish will still be a challenge.  On paper Team Canada has this tournament in the bag, but let's see how it all plays out.

I dunno, Canada has a strong top 3. If Price is on and healthy, he is *arguably* the best in the business. If It's not Price, it might just be Holtby, who just happens to be Carey's back up....and our 3rd stringer who does not dress Crawford, has a Stanley Cup ring.

The loss of Duncan Kieth weakens the defense a bit, but Price having rock solid guys l like Weber, Vlasic, Doughty, Burns, Muzzin, Pieteranglo...these are all very talented d-men who combine skating, smarts and the ability to lug the puck up the ice. They are gonna make life pretty easy for Mr.Price. Other teams will be hard pressed to fluster this group. Even the 7th d-man Boumeester can skate like the dickens. I do think they made the wrong choice for Duncan's replacement....Giordano deserved to be on this team...hell, I would have taken his teammate T.J Brodie before Jay.

One other thing that has me puzzled. Should not come as a surprise to anyone posting here, but I just don't get the Jeff Carter love. He lost half a step last year....and the high and wide shots will send opponents on odd man rushes....ha ha. Then, they replace the injured Carter with Corey Perry. Hey, I know grit is important.....but Corey was just not very effective last season.

If you want to create natural mismatches, why did Taylor Hall get left off this team. He's probably the fastest player in the league, can create all kinds of odd man rushes and has a great shot. I wanted to see a 2nd line with Toews centering Hall and Tavares. Perhaps Team Canada's architects used the same reasoning that the Oilers used when they dealt Hall for substantially less than what he was worth. There has to be some kind of off the ice thing that is dogging Taylor, cause he really should be on this team.

Any truth to the rumor you will sit for Finland's national anthem to protest the lack of tanning facilities in Finland?  Very suspicious how white those people are, any nation *that* pale probably has a hidden anti-coloured agenda. Would not be surprised to see Trump build his next Golf course there....tisk, tisk.

Ok, then Canada is just hands down the best team on paper, lol. -- maybe a tie with goaltending  but as you said darn good.  :blushing:

Perry has always come up big for Canada and frankly I'm surprised Carter got the nod over Perry in the first place.  As for Hall, there seems to be a conspiracy theory going that Hall will never be on a Canada team until his two way play improves.  Considering he didn't make the North America team either -- I think this says something.  Maybe with the Devils he'll be able to prove himself a worth two-way player.

Yes, I agree...the lack of defensive acumen is probably what did in Hall's Team Canada's dream. When Taylor played in Windsor, at *least* 3-4 times a game Hall would refuse to come off the ice and basically pull a unauthorized double shift. Not sure if he pulled that in Edmonton......but, in general...Hall's ego takes away from a teams unity. He got away with that stuff in Windsor, but the coaches, management and even the fan base demand a certain level of co-operation at the nhl level....they won't accept players being cowboys. If I had to take a guess, I'd say ego is the root cause of Hall's problems. Maybe being reunited with Adam Henrique will have a positive effect on him. Would like to see Taylor wake up and secure a spot for the 2018 Olympics.
