So, this Mike Vecchione guy, former teammate of Ghost, gets to pick a team this week...any chance he signs with the Flyers?  Do we even want him on the Flyers?  I know nothing about this guy....thoughts, comments?

I don't either. He looks a lot like a Matt Read clone based on his size and profile. Even is RH. Put up more points in College so maybe he's a better offensive player, but it would be by a matter of degrees I would think.

I like the "C" he wears though. We need some leaders.

The team captain has had a huge season and is now the program’s all-time career scoring leader while becoming the active career scoring leader in the nation (175 points). Vecchione (VECK-ee-oh-nee) is a finalist for ECAC Player of the Year and Best Defensive Forward. Entering the ECAC playoff tourney, he is third in the nation in points, second in goals and leads the nation with 21 multiple point games, leads the nation with seven game winning goals and tied for first with four short-handed tallies.

  • Has 29 goals, 33 assists for 62 points in 36 games – won 61% of faceoffs, 4th in nation
  • Points per game average of 1.72 is first in the nation – History major
  • Active in many events; spearheaded effort to serve Thanksgiving meals at local YMCA

I have to agree @Podein25  he's a replacement for Matt Read.

61% face off wins, 4th in the county! Maybe Hexy will sign him as a FO specialist to take some pressure of G...oh wait he did that already.

I guess the question the organEYEsation has to answer is "Is Vecchione potentially better than Filppula?"

Vecchione will be looking to go somewhere he is needed and, as a center, I don't see much room for him if they keep Filppula long term....what do I know?

Wonder if Hextall would offer to burn his entry level contract year like he did with Lyon to sign him. He could join Flyers for the last weeks of the regular season then join Phantoms for playoffs.

Every time I see his name Vecchione I think of the church seen from Saving Private Ryan the guy they are talking about his name is Vecchio almost the same. Now Vecchione needs to walk on his hands and pee a V onto his teammates equipment.

As a side note, the whole reason he's available now is because of all teams Penn State whooped Union's butt.

Of course I knew Penn State's hockey team was getting better and better over the past five years or so, and I know they're out of it now, but going from a club team that wasn't even a part of the NCAA to the Elite 8 in 6 years is really impressive.

As I understand it, they've got a few Baker finalists too.  kinda nutz.

24 year old putting up big numbers against 18 and 19 year olds in college.  And he disappeared late in the season.  I'll pass.

Harsh.

But fair.

It's a good reminder to people trying to evaluate talent: you have compare apples to apples.

Poco is loco.

He just turned 24.

And is playing against guys his age as well.

19 years old very seldom play big minutes unless they are forced into the lineup due to lack of depth.

Like even in football they have to wait or work their way up.

Regardless they are playing against over 22, 23 and 24 year olds.

ITS' COLLAGE!

He is 3 months older than Jimmy Vesey...big deal if you can find a undrafted free agent around that age and he can help sign him!

His linemate Spencer Foo is a year younger and is available as a free agent to and if i'm the Flyers i try to sign him too.

Still quite out there....

Where would he slot in?

Vesey, for all the hype, has 26 points, and worst +/- on the team at -9. Compare to Zuccarello at +12 and Grabner at +25.

I'm not saying this to knock the guy in his first year, but these guys are fully overrated. The odd one pans out, like Gaudreau, but he also has 3 years NHL experience now and is the same age as Vesey. So he started at 20 vs. 23.

I like getting prospects for free, but I'm honestly not sure there's a place for him on this team. Not at center, that's for sure.

That being said, if they sign him, awesome! If they don't, oh well!

Fair enough. But Vesey might be the exception for College players. I'm all for signing College players - there's a good chance that they are smart, coachable players for one thing - but I think we have to be realistic in our expectations of what their top end potential is.

I'm guessing at center. But he'd have to earn it. But in the meantime he could play this playoffs on the Phantoms.

Phantoms could use him for the playoff push.

Right now Laughton is the top line center so he could push him down or push Andy Miele down to the 3rd center spot.

9 Bardreau 49 Laughton 13 McDonald

23 Leier 22 Vecchione 7 Zengerle

18 Martel 21 Miele 16 Aube-Kubel

12 Goulbourne 14 Knight 19 Fazleev

Greg Carey should be healthy soon as well as Connor. Some decent depth till then.

I never said or claimed what he top end talent could be but just like a prospect that was drafted it's up to the kid how good he can be.

The way i look at it is it doesn't cost you anything right now except money...you can sign him and due to his age he can only sign a one year max deal.

And you go from there.

You'd would own his rights after next year and then you could see how he progressed. All you can do.

Just like when they signed Lyon who is 24 to by the way. He has played well for the Phantoms.

You own his rights now and can sign him to a small bridge type deal or walk away.

Just another option that teams explore. I'm all for it.

Sometimes it works out like Matt Read sometimes it ends up like Mike Testwuide from years back.
