@bags2 Boston has 56.6 mill committed to 16 players next year, and have yet to secure the services of future RFA Tuka Rask....which is gonna take up a lot of their remaining cap space. When they sign Rask, and give Horton the money he wants, they will be out of cap space with positons left to fill, I suppose it's doable....but they would have to make moves to make this happen...which could very well happen.

If this was "who will make offers to these FAs?" I'd win big.

EDIT: It is not actually possible for the Flyers to re-acquire Briere next season

I feel like they'll do what they can to keep Horton around, but it won't surprise me if they let him walk. Not a whole lot of cap space after they sign him and Rask like you said and they'd still need to sign another goalie and defenseman. And if they sign those two they'd have no choice but to let Ference walk (allowing the Caps to swoop in ;) )

@bags2 Yep, Ference does not get a lot of hype, but he is a solid defender with a lot to offer. I would even make a case that he deserves to be on this top 15 list ahead of some of the guys listed. Ference does not put up a ton of pts, but a super dependable d-man is hard to come by.

@radoran

The funny thing is -- and more evidence that we may, in fact, be the same person -- I thought about putting Flyers for everything too.

I figured that the chances of them going into the season with Mason/Mike Smith/Backstrom as the goalie "tandem" were pretty darn good.

I'm supposing "age" is involved in these rankings because I wouldn't put Smith ahead of Backstrom and think that Danny Briere today is better than Derek Roy ever was or will be...

I'm really hoping the Caps can land either him or Scuderi. We're in desperate need of at least one more LD, because as far as I'm concerned Erskine and Hillen aren't cutting it.

@bags2 Dimitri Orlov is one of my favourite young defensemen in the league. Wow, is that kid tough or what? Plays a nice brand of sound positional d also....which is only get better with experience. If he played for Philly, he would become a god.

@jammer2 I'm a big fan of Orlov as well. Love the way he plays, but after his injury with Hershey during the lockout the Caps gave him essentially no time to recover and just handed his spot to Hillen which I think was pretty stupid. I'm more than happy with Alzner and Orlov at LD, but we need one more.

Just off the top of my head....didn't research cap space etc...

1)Horton- Montreal

2)Flippula- Capitals

3)Clarkson- Detroit

4)Ribiero- Toronto

5)Weiss- Ottawa

6)M.Smith- Calgary

7)Elias- Panthers

8)Dupuis- Penguins +1

9)Iginla- Oilers.....I kid, lol....actually Detroit

10)Bickell- Rangers

11)Roy- Ducks

12)Briere- Islanders

13)Backstrom- Minnesota signed prior to making picks

14)Hainsey- Stars

15)Brunner- Columbus

I also think the injury history of Mez and Grossmann force the Flyers into another defensive d-man so Scuderi is an obvious choice, will also strengthen the defense for the new goale and Mason.

If these are the top 15, it gives me hope the flyers might be able to woo scuderi without shelling out too much.

The flyers unfortunately can't make moves for most of these guys without trading most of the team.

I wouldn't mind having clarkson though. NJ will spend to keep clarkson though and lose Elias (who will want another stab or two at a cup) to someone else (probably not us).

Briere will end up in jersey at the end of that mess for very little money.

Horton will be resigned. They'll let loose Jagr and a few others to make the Horton Rask thing work.

Here is a list of the top 15 FA available in 2013.

1. Nathan Horton, RW

2. Valterri Flippula, C/W.

3. David Clarkson, RW

4. Mike Ribero, C

6. Mike Smith, G

7. Patrick Elias, LW

8. Pascal Dupuis, LW

15. Damien Brunner, RW

@King Knut "I wouldn't mind having clarkson though. NJ will spend to keep clarkson though and lose Elias (who will want another stab or two at a cup) to someone else (probably not us)"

In a normal situation, I'd agree with this statement, or at least think it's possible. What we are seeing from the Devils is not normal. Bailed out twice already by the NHL, and facing yet another situation where they are unable to pay creditors on a deadline. I believe the time has come for NJ to implement their own cap, one that forces them to let go of stars in order to stave off complete and total financial devestation. Then, hope that what is left of their fan base is patient and they some how draft well enough and pluck a few ugly ducklings that turn into stars. It really has reached the breaking point...I see Clarkson and Elias leaving for top dollar, I don't blame them, but NJ just is not in a positon to financially compete right now.

One of the things I worry about is the fact Clarkson has taken a TON of beatings in front of the net, how much longer can his body hold up? Guy is tough as nails and I always secretly wanted him to be a Flyer, even before he started popping in 20 goal seasons, but I reallly wonder when he starts to break down and how qucik the fall will be when and if and when his body does give out. Wendel Clark comes to mind as a primary example. When he went, he went quick. I'd be really concerned about giving him a long term deal. Maybe it's just me being a worry wort, but that's the way I see it.

At the risk of going to far off topic, is it not time the NHL comes up with an award for best combo of physicality and scoring? Yeah, heaven forbid we glorify the two things that pure hockey fans love and respect...knuckles and scoring!!! Can a new trophy not generate interest and debate? It would be good for the sport.

  • 2 months later...

Sure took longer than expected to get all the players signed.

We have a tie.

Ruxpin and AlaskaFlyerFan with 5 correct FA signings.  500 very imaginary tokens to each!

Congrats!

This also proved to be much tougher than expected.  We will do this again for the trade deadline.
