Holy Shattenkirk!

Out of the Blue last night, (no pun intended) Image result for kevin shattenkirkKevin Shattenkirk, one of the games best power play quarterbacks who is about to break the bank when UFA begins on July first was acquired by the Capitals from the Blues for prospect Zach Sanford, this years first rounder and a conditional second rounder. After months, maybe years of speculating where Shattenkirk would land he lands with the games best team making the rich richer.

Speculation has been that he has turned down deals to several other cities who have attempted to get him under contract for next year and beyond, the big rumor is that he wants to play for the Rangers next season, the Rangers have been rumored in recent days to be in the running to acquire him for this year but have played hardball, refusing to part with a prospect the likes of Sanford in any potential deal and now Shattenkrik fixes one of the few small weaknesses on the leagues best club. The irony is not lost upon me either that the Capitals are playing at Madison Square Garden tonight.

Wow is right!  Talk about a team coming in from right field and under the radar.  Did not see this coming.  So do you replace Carlson with Shatty on the PP?

Ovie - Johansson - Backstrom - Oshie - Shatty?

Talk about the rich getting richer....wow....

And a small relatively unnoticed piece of the trade had AHL goalie Pheonix Copley sent alongside of Shattenkrik to the Capitals as part of the return.

I am not saying that Copley is the next Glenn Hall or Gump Worsley but he is a relatively young netminder who has performed very well at the AHL level for several years and his addition signals that MacLellan looked around at organizational depth in net and was preparing his team in case they lose Grubauer in the expansion draft as Maclellan stays a step ahead of the competition. IMHO Copley could step into the backup role in Washington and seamlessly do the exact same job as Grubauer as if nothing had changed.

Those PP Combos now....Teams are going to have matchup nightmares with their 2nd PK units.

Trotz likes running his PP units 1 minute each, as opposed to the traditional 1:30 with 30 seconds for the second unit.

Ovechkin is the only one who tends to double shift. But now you have 2 deadly PP units.

Ovehckin/Backstrom/Oshie

Johansson/Shattenkirk

+

Ovechkin/Kuznetsov/Williams

Niskanen/Carlson

or somesuch. Orlov and Burakovski now get bumped out of their PP time and teams have to figure out if they want their top PK unit playing tired vs Combo 2, or putting in the B team PK unit vs that second combo. OUCH

With Oshie, Alzner, and now Shattenkirk all UFA this summer, it's now or never for the Caps.

From where I'm sitting, it's a wise all in kinda move by the Caps. Plus, Shatts is IN Wash, gets to see the team, how things work which may play to their advantage when trying to secure a long term deal.  Plus, it's a very late 1st rounder on a team that has decent organizational depth already, no big huge loss.

And if they don't, the Shatt's gonna hit the Fan!

If you really look at it closely, Alzner is easily replaced from within or a cheaper UFA option, and Oshie, as good as he is, can be supplanted from the top pp by Burakowsky, who has been a rising star in the bottom six for quite a while. They will be ok, maybe even stronger.  The bigger problem is making sure the bottom six has quality forwards like Burakowsky etc.

You are not kidding....It looks like the cupboard is going to be bare for a while in Hershey. The Caps don't have a single pick before the 4th round if I read that right. Plus, the salary dump that will have to occur just to get them under the cap next year might free up a vet like Justin Williams who would be a great leader for a team like the Flyers on a 2 yr deal.

A great interview with Doug Armstrong, re: the Shattenkirk trade, where he talks about this as a rebuilding phase all while still trying to make the playoffs:

Great signing by the Caps, but if they face the Penguins again there's a more than good chance they Shatt the bed. I'm still not sure how well they can deal with teams with a very good amount of speed.
