Regarding the tanking, most NHL fans realize the Pens basically had an AHL team for some years because ownership didn't give a crap about the product on the ice. Shero walked into a great situation in 2006 when he became GM when he had the second pick overall and drafted Staal but he already had Crosby, Malkin, Fleury and Whitney on the team. I don't care what anybody says, the Pens were gifted Crosby in the 2005 draft after coming out of the lockout, the formula for that draft should have been 1 ball for each team in the league not 3 balls for teams that didn't make the playoffs in the previous 3 years -- every team lost big time in that lockout so everyone should have had an equal chance of drafting Crosby. So if you take away those "gifts" as Flyercanuck posted, then it would have been interesting to see how Shero would have been as a gm. Don't forget when he took over there was no pressure for him to win right away where as Holmgren doesn't have that luxury in Philly because of owner Ed's lack of patience. Granted Holmgren has made some good and bad trades, good and bad signings but as long as Ed Snider's impatience attempts of trying to win every year so he'll have one more championship before he kicks the bucket, things will never change as to how this team is managed.
