Pens Sign Gonchar to tryout, meanwhile Holmgren is pissed at Hextall for passing on Gonchar.

Homer: "C'mon Ron, he's only 41, he's got some miles left. He could be our PP specialist. I say 4 years/24 million with a full NMC could get it done."

Hextall: "Go for a bike ride!" ;)

If Homer knew he could not skate backwards, he would have insisted Hextall increase the contract off the 6yr/$42mil

Skate backwards?  I thought the Flyers gave those kind of contracts to pylons(like Chris Pronger)

@nossagog- You are correct. Flyers criteria for defense under Holmgren; old, slow, injury prone, poor skater, turnover machine, pylon. The more boxes that could be checked yes, the longer the term of the contract :)

Good side? I can wear my jersey again.

Bad side? What possible use could he be at this point??

Clearly the Pens understand the value that a 40+ year old defenseman with rapidly declining declined skills playing (likely) minimal minutes per night can have.

Kinda sad, dontcha think, that they're trying to mimic the Blackhawks' plan for success when the Malkin/Crosby pairing won the Cup back before Chicago won three?

The Pens gave up two 2nds to sign Gonchar? In that case, I don't like the signing.  ;)

I was riffing off your riff in the first place :)

Of course, they already tried that route with the two 2nds for Murray in 2013. But since neither of those picks turned into anything important...

I mean, it's not like the Pens were ranked dead last in terms of organizational depth or anything, despite not winning a Cup since before Chicago won three.

Wait - so you are saying Cup-contending teams shouldn't waste picks on useless aquisitions of aging defensemen let alone defensemen coming off a year long lay off?  Glad we straightened that one out.   :D

Malkin is not exactly the mentoring type. Perhaps the Pens wanted a mentor/role model for Poltinkov, who is coming over from the KHL this year. Gonchar could help him adjust to life in the North America etc.

No, I said The Pens shouldn't have done that.

I didn't realize Gonchar is 16th all time scoring defenseman in NHL history.  Kudos to him.  I admit I quit paying much attention to him when he left here.  I was a little disappointed when that happened.  I mean he can't touch Pronger on the plus/minus/worthless stat category... but still....   ;)
