After a Flyers trade down, they choose from Russia U18 - Center - German Rubtsov.

NHL Central Scouting final international ranking: 5

Rubtsov is said to be the most talented prospect in out of Russia.  He is being coined as the next Pavel Datsyuk and if it were not for the Russian U18 Meldonium scandal Rubtsov may have even gone in the top 10.

Dennis Schellenberg - THW -"Rubtsov is a highly-intelligent two-way center and is probably one of the players with the highest Hockey IQ of the entire draft. He possesses a great vision and can really distribute the puck very well. He seems to always be aware of his line mates and is a great setup guy. Rubtsov makes smart decisions with the puck and barely turns the puck over. He is a calm puck carrier and uses his strong puck-handling skills to dance through the neutral zone with speed.

His strides are powerful and he is hard to knock off the puck as he is an excellent puck protector and uses his long reach and body to make it nearly impossible to steal the puck. Although he is not an overly physical player, he is hard to knock off his position and can play with a physical edge if needed. He possesses smooth hands and has a good and accurate shot too. However, he is more of a pass first guy and does not shoot the puck very often.

Rubtsov understands the game mentally very well and is a leader on the ice. He is a coach’s dream as he combines work ethic, a strong two-way game and smarts. His backcheck is strong and he is very well aware of his defensive responsibilities. He often uses his stick to interfere passes and is excellent when using his active stick work to steal the puck or cut passing lanes. In the neutral zone, he is a pain to play against as he cuts passing lanes with an effective positioning game and is able to prevent a quick transition game by the opponents. Rubtsov is great in anticipating plays and can be used in all game situations."

From Future Considerations:
Rubtsov is a highly intelligent contributor all over the ice. He is a game-changer and a highly competitive kid. He can be a dominant puck-possession guy, a strong puck-distributor, a finisher, a defensive specialist and even a pest at times. He has strong skating ability, as he is fast and agile; he uses his skating on both sides of the puck.

The Russian center plays a complete game and commits defensively, getting back and being hard on his man at all costs. Rubtsov gets back with speed and can break up plays unexpectedly from behind with a quick stick lift and puck scoop. He continuously makes great defensive plays before turning back up ice. Rubtsov seems to always be on the puck, and when he is not, he is relentless in getting on it. He pounces on opportunities, taking advantage of loose pucks and time and space, and has an impressive ability to create something out of absolutely nothing.

He is strong on the puck and possesses unexpected soft hands in tight. Rubtsov uses his size and strength to protect the puck and fend off incoming checks all while maintaining possession and getting himself in position to try a shot or pass. He uses his long reach to his advantage to break up plays as well as pull the puck back in tight to his body and away from opposing players; he also uses it to keep the puck a distance from the check, increasing his ability to protect it in open ice.

Rubtsov has deceptive speed and is quite shifty while moving full steam ahead, making excellent use of his edges to move laterally. He possesses incredible hockey sense, reading the play well and adapting accordingly, showing no quit in his game. Rubtsov picks his spots very well and has a high-velocity shot that he can get off as he moves toward the net, keeping the puck away from his body just enough to unload. He has a creative mind, and can find his man in traffic with crisp tape-to-tape passes. Rubtsov’s on-ice vision, awareness of the game and work ethic are probably his biggest strengths.

Sounds like he fits into Hakstol's system.....

more from Future Considerations.....

He is a very strong skater with excellent acceleration and balance. But mix in his mobility with strength and tenacity, and you get a coach’s dream. Rubtsov is a “big play” center who preys on the weak, and his superior playmaking ability and vision enables him to be used in key situations regardless of which end of the scoreboard his team is on. He’s an extremely competitive leader who will involve himself physically if the game is in need of a momentum shift. Rubtsov has a very good shot which he can wire off his back foot or unload via a slapper, and while he is very accurate in terms of getting it on net, we has a tendency to look for the pass as a primary course of action.

One of the knocks on him is that he rarely shoots the puck.  Not sure I like that.  Hopefully, he can shake that.

Howdy:

I wonder if this says Laughton or Cousins are downgraded in the long-term plans?

I think it is way to early to tell.

But you stock up at every spot and make them battle it out.

Competition is good for everyone the cream will rise to the top.

Loser will lose his spot and eventually be shown the door.

Final Thoughts from Future Considerations......

NHL Potential:

German Rubtsov has all the markings of a top-six forward in the NHL. His talent is undeniable, and he has the attitude to be a top producer. There’s every indication that he could end up being an elite player in the league.

Expected Draft Position:

If you were to just look at his on-ice performance, Rubtsov would potentially be a top 10 pick. Unfortunately for him, he was a member of the Russian team that was banned from participating in the 2016 IIHF U18 World Champtionship because he and his teammates tested positive for a banned substance. That kind of black mark gives front offices pause, and it will certainly affect his draft position. Currently, he’s projected across most ranking services as a high-teens or low-twenties pick.

Would it be fair the Flyers got a potential top 10 pick at #22?

From NHL.com

Rubtsov makes good decisions with the puck, is an effective penalty killer, and is willing to battle and pay the price for a goal.

NHL.com quick hit: Scouts like Rubtsov's commitment to the defensive part of his game while still being a strong offensive performer. The Flyers have added a number of strong defense prospects the past few years, and now are starting to focus on finding solid young forwards. He could move to North America next season, potentially to play in the Canadian Hockey League.

yup...i saw that too..... "he has a tendency to look for the pass as a primary course of action."

I think with the right coaching, I think this is something that is very correctable....

A guy who plays excellent defensively and passes the puck very well. Sounds like the perfect guy to play with Yakupov. :)

They have enough right wings as it is. Nick Aube- Kubel and Travis Konecny are going to be 1st and 3nd RWs in the near future.

From Silly.com

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/sports/flyers/Flyers-trade-down-then-select-Rubtsov.html

"We've dug deep on his character.  ...  This kid has great character," general manager Ron Hextall said about the speedy Rubtsov, whom he said the Flyers had targeted all along.

"I'm not worried I didn't go higher [in the draft]," Rubtsov said. "I was just hoping to get drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers, so things turned out exactly like I was hoping.  ...  They're my favorite team."

Rubtsov said the Flyers "kept an eye on me and spent a lot of time talking to me.  ...  They put in a big effort to talk to me."

Wait a sec, he's a Flyer fan?!

I find Hexy's comment that they had targeted Rubbie all along interesting in light of them trading down. So does this mean they knew that none of the 4 teams in the 18-21 slot were going to take him?

I mean, if they really wanted him, why not take him at 18 and not risk losing him?

As the trade was announced, I came to the conclusion that Hexy and the scouts had a reasonable expectation that their target would last through picks 18-21. If was indeed the case, it was wonderfully smart. Maybe they target a goalie they really like at #36? I'm a little worried that Dubrincat (one of the big offense forces not picked on Friday) becomes a power play specialist....he's quick but not fast, that's a bit alarming with a 5'7 prospect. Johnny Gaudreau is way thinner, but he's blazing fast. I don't see any way they draft another center, but I really like the game Pu plays, from the Memorial Cup Champs London Knights. London was so deep it prevented Pu from getting the kind of ice time he needed to grow his offensive game, next year he will be utilized much more.

Once you're picking down as far as we were in this draft it wasn't a bad idea to go for the quantity. Ruble isn't a bad pick and could have easily went where we picked originally.

Now that we have 3 - 2nds we can do a lot of things. Cliff Pu is a good choice as jammer mentioned. Pascal Labarge is another if he's still there. You could swing for the fences with small sniper Alex Debrincat. Cam Dineen and kale Clague are two good defencemen still on board. Tyler Benson?

Nice writeup by Meltzer:

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=77775

He points out that the Flyers probably had Rubtsov targeted, but were comfortable trading down because one of either Jones, Gauthier, or Bellows would have probably been available had they misjudged and Rubtsov got picked.

I hadn't really read too much on this draft, but I like what has been written about this kid. And nabbing an early 2nd in the trade is excellent.
