Any Gagne News?

"Sauve said he’s had only a couple of informal conversations about his client with other teams, because he knows which way Gagne wants to go.

"'I know Simon wants to be in Philadelphia,” Sauve said. “He’s a true Flyer. So hopefully this will be worked out. It’s a different game today with the salary cap. But I’m comfortable that they’re going to find a way to sign him.'”

No news on another team, but they are over the cap at the moment and trying to be below it and include Gagne with the roster.

Hope they mando this situation, because with Gagne in the lineup Team looks good, without Gagne in the lineup the team looks questionable.

(as in people having questions who goes where more often and lack of offensive clutch/defensive forward specialist.)

Well the good news is I think the team has moved on... and we can keep him at the same time. Gagne used to be part of the team's core and a focal point of how they were built. They moved on from that a long time ago now... even before he went to Tampa IMHO.

Now however, I think he's one of those guys that will greatly help this team. He may not put up 30 goals any more, but I think the team is still better with him on it (as opposed to say Knuble or Shelley with whom they were certainly NOT).

Also, he's a good guy to have around to show the young core how to play the total game.

I mean if you're expecting Gagne to be a centerpiece of the team, you're outta luck. If you're expecting him to fill a role and score a big goal once in a while (He has scored some of this team's biggest in the last 15 years) then I think he's a good guy to have a round... especially for a lower cap hit which is what I think he will be.

I hope not. Nice Guy and had his day, but let's move on.

OK, but that would push Read to the 4th line. I woudl rather have Read on the wing and put Talbot on the 4th line.

Agreed, though someone is going to get hurt at some point, and given the flyers' history, sooner rather than later. Who ever is on the fourth line opening night will only be there briefly

@Mad Dog

No my lines are as such:

VL-Giroux-Voracek

Read-Schenn-Simmonds

Gagne-Couturier-Talbot

Rinaldo-Laughton-Rosehill

See if Hartnell and Meszaros could net some solid defensive depth.

Oh I see. I agree, Read belongs on no lower than a 3rd line. Unfortunately, to hope that Hartnell will waive his NTC and won't be with the team come the beginning of the season is a wishful thinking. I can't see him going anywhere.

The lines might be:

Hartnell Giroux VL (He stated he feels comfortable on right wing if he had to change from center.)

Schenn Couturier Voracek

Read Gagne Simmonds

Rinaldo Talbot Rosehill

Hartnell Giroux Voracek

Schenn VL Simmonds

Read Couturier Gagne

Rinaldo Talbot Rosehill

Any scenario where Read is on the 4th line is not good for the team. When it comes to Gagne, I'm overly emotional, can't seperate the facts from my emotional attachment to the player, and what he has meant to the team over the years. When it comes down to it, he makes the Flyers tougher to play against, with his speed and smarts...that is important. I hope they can find a way to get it done, but don't know if my feelings for the player is clouding my better judgement. If it is time to move on...I don't know if I could pull the trigger.

Jammer, I look at him this way: Who are you going to get that's a better 3rd (or even 4th) line fit, can play PP and PK, provides some leadership, and can hop up to the 1st or second lines in a pinch if it becomes necessary, and do a better job in most of those roles, for what it would cost to re-sign Gagne? He's one of my favorite players as well, but it's not hard to take a detached look and come up with about the same assessment as to why keeping him around makes sense.

I agree with you Jammer2, Gagne represents the Flyers and he is the last piece of history of the Legion of Doom era, he carried our team when we were hurting during those tumultuous years, and was a reliable clutch player who brought us hope to an extent, be it a lesser extent like Dr. J use to bring to the spectrum, when we were down by a few points in the 4th qtr. Primeau also to an extent as well, which I slowly warmed up to him and has forever gained my respect.

He still has a lot of value on this team, a dangerous weapon, a leader, a wise counselor and a clutch offensive/defensive forward. Something we hope Matt Read can attain to, someday.

He should be signed for one/two more years and allow to retire a Flyer.

First year 2 mill second 1.5/.8 mill. (of course he deserves more, though with the cap era, thems are the facts.)

Agreed with everything that has been said in this thread. I can't imagine anybody - and I mean ANYBODY in the entire NHL and the fanbase, and not just the Flyers - having anything but the utmost respect for Gags. An ultimate professional in a true meaning of this word, with an exceptional work ethics and conduct. A quiet leader who leads by example every game and every shift. Never complains, gives 100% every time he steps out on the ice (even when there is nothing left). A pure class and great mentor. And I will never forget his leadership in that glorious Boston series two years ago. He set the tone to that miraculous comeback in the series and especially in Game 7.

He may not be what he was 6 years ago when he scored 40 goals at will. But the intangibles he brings to the ice and to the locker room are immeasurable to ignore.

If you are a coach, Gags is everything you want your player to be in every aspect. I can't imagine the Flyers wouldn't be able to find a place for him.

@LegionOfDoom If there is any player I want teaching the kids on how to conduct themselves, both on and off the ice, it's Gags. I want them learning from a true professional. There is no real monetary value you can attach to that kinda stuff.

Where to get the best cars... :D

Seriously, though, I do have to agree with the general sentiments about ol' Simon. I don't think they brought him back last year to drop him this season.

@radoran Seems like just yesterday Gags was kicking some serious butt for the Canada's World Jr team....wow do the years fly by. Would love to see Gags don the O&B for one more year (or more). Like many say, his experience and versitality make him a logical choice to round out our forward group....not to mention the obvious sentimental attachment many of us have. If he was not skating well, I doubt I'd be so adament about his return, but Gags still skates very well...maybe not as explosive as the prime years, but Gags minus a half a step is still better than most can muster.

Silde rule Laughton in juniors, insert Hall. Maybe start Couturier in the AHL for roster space, as he's still waiver exempt. Hartnell LW2, Read RW3, Talbot C3. Roll four lines during the season.
