I didn't like the Briere signing from day 1  but he certainly won me over as a playoff performer. One of the better small players of alltime.

A portion of the article:

I am terminating my playing career to get more involved in the lives of my three boys. They arrive at a crucial age when they need a father at home.

Caelan 17 years old. He began his senior year in high school. Carson will celebrate 16 years next month. Cameron is 14 years old. For him, the secondary begins.

I want to be more present to help them in their studies. I want to show them the right path. Sometimes when parental supervision is not optimal, human nature pushes young people to seek easier paths. To cheat. It is important that I come home to this.

I also want to get more involved in their sport. They will play every three hockey this season.

By being more present, I can show them simple things. I can for example inculcate good eating habits and good training methods. These are things that will accompany them to the end of their days.

These are things that my parents made for me.

This column is suggested to use me to thank people. It is precisely my parents, Robert and Constance, who come to mind first.

The parents of young athletes invest considerable time and money to allow their children to live their dreams. Guylaine with my sister, mine have imposed many sacrifices during my youth. I say a big, big thank you.

As for the others ... Let's say I could blacken the pages of several newspapers if I started naming all the people who helped me, who supported me all these years. I am afraid of forgetting. I am convinced that the people I would like to thank today will be able to recognize themselves.

It is perhaps not over. Although my focus in the coming months will be not too far away from home, I could still find a little time to get involved with the Flyers here in Philadelphia. I've always been treated well within this organization and I would be proud to maintain a role.

Nothing is set, nothing is official. I have not accepted a full-time position with them. I've always been a fan of hockey. I always loved the game . It will not change.

Otherwise, I can not wait to spend some more time with Misha, my partner the last four years.
I shall not be sorry to prolong a bit my golf season. In the past, I had more or less put my sticks towards the end of July, when I had to start training more intensively on ice.

I will give my formal decision tomorrow in a press conference in Philadelphia.

I didn't like the Briere signing from day 1 but he certainly won me over as a playoff performer.

Given that they "had to have" one of the three ZOMG #1 Centers! at the time, he turned out to be the best. I can't even imagine how this town would have reacted to Drury or Gomez.

Of course, they then spent most of his time here trying to find any place to play him that wasn't the ZOMG #1 Center! position that they "had to have" when they signed him, but I digress...

And his playoff performance cannot be understated - .93 ppg.

I hope he can hook on with the team in some capacity.

Best to Danny & his family.

lil' Paul McCartney remains a class act.

I liked him and his stone cold killer mentality, he wanted the puck on his stick in the biggest moments and succeeded.

I like that he opened his home to young players, he is a great guy and was a very good hockey player.  I wish him the best.

One of the handful of players who were capable of elevating their play in the playoffs to a level we never witnesses during his regular season performances. In addition to being a very decent guy from what I have gathered, what's not to like? Here's to hoping he enjoys retirement!!!

I like them signing Danny just didn't like the length. He was clutch in the playoffs.

Will the Flyers ever see a player score 30 points in the playoffs again?

I wish him well in his retirement. He was killer around the goal. He won't be the 1st center in the league who didn't like playing defense.

Yeah, but the whole length was a cap circumvention that would have probably worked out exactly the same way (buy out) even if there wasn't a compliance buyout option.

Quite frankly, they wasted that compliance buyout on Briere...

God i hope so with a 20mill dollar and climbing 1st line........what else needs to be done...defense is overrated...Hawks won one with a 50 year Kimmo!!!!

Also, too, Ville "21 points in 19 games" Leino

Career .867 ppg in the playoffs for the Flyers.

:hocky:

Yep, Leino has Briere to thank for that ridiculous payday he got from the Sabres because Darcy Reiger was a moron. Reiger saw the numbers he put up playing with Briere and presto, "there's our new number 1 center" LOL

I don't know who in Buffalo thought Leino as a #1 Center was in any way, shape or form a Good Thing. It was ridiculous from the start.

The team really hasn't had a #1 center since Drury/Briere left - which is saying something given that their entire focus was on finding a "#1 center" for Vanek for years.

Leino could have been a top six forward for Buffalo, but only on the wing*. Ruff forcing the round peg into a square hole and then getting mad at the round peg for not fitting was a mysterious choice for a guy I otherwise have pretty good feelings about as a coach. But as soon as they brought in Leino, they blew the damn team up.

FWIW, Leino's getting $1.2M a year from the Sabres this season. And next season. And three more seasons after that...

* Craig "any forward can play any position" Berube's "best hockey mind {Homer} knows" opinion notwithstanding.

I will never forget the heart he showed in the playoffs. He stepped up large when the team needed it most. Nor will I ever forget him dogging it in the regular season for the his final 3 years as a Flyer....he was outright disgraceful during the regular season. He is no role model.
