The pens beating the presidents trophy team to move on to the ECF does not make me happy.  Some flyers fans wanted that to happen, which I don't understand, but I guess everyone has their reasons.

There's been so much talk about building from the draft.  The pens did build from the draft, but that was like 12 years ago.  Those guys have been their core, but the draft doesn't seem to mean too much to them anymore.  After having malkin, crosby, and fleury under big contracts, they gave letang a big contract and then they added kessel.  I laughed at that time because I thought they were moving in somewhat of the same direction that the flyers used to move.  They throw a ton of money at a few guys, sign a high priced free agent, and get caught in cap hell with some bums to round out the roster.

You know what the difference is?  The bums to round out the roster aren't really bums at all.  They all can skate and they all play the right way.  Who is sheary or kunakel or banino or hornquist or rust (pretty sure I spelled all of those wrong)?  I'll tell you who they are...players that can all skate better than 75% of the flyers.  They all look like their crotches are on fire out there.  Then they add hagelin out of nowhere.  There's no Couturier out there to slow down the game for better possesion time numbers.  They had that guy who they traded to Carolina...how has that worked out for Carolina?  It's hard to bash the leading scorer of your team, but the pens don't have a one-trick pony like simmonds who gets 90% of his goals from the bottom of the circles in.  The pens don't have 3rd and 4th liners that are PK specialists with no offensive abilities.  I'm pretty sure they don't have many defensive defensmen that can't contribute offensively.

Now I'm sure I'll get the replies that show better stats for some of these flyers guys compared to the pens.  That doesn't mean anything in this situation.  When a team plays like a "team" and everyone is creating chances, the scoring and other stats gets distributed evenly.  Crosby and Malkin aren't doing much because they don't have to.  They just take up space so others can step up.

I've been completely against the thought of trading Giroux, but might it be better for the team if they got three or four great skaters with some skill that can all contribute?  Might it be better to have a few guys that are swarming around or beyond the circles rather than a guy that posts up in the paint to get his goals?

It just bothers me that the pens continue to have success with a bunch of no names and the flyers haven't figured it out yet.  Hextall is only 2 years in so I don't know exactly where his plan is going, but I hope he makes some moves to get some guys in here that play the right way.

I really think Sullivan's approach to letting those guys loose has had a lot to do with the Pens success...this is essentially the same team that couldn't suck enough playing for Johnston.

So i think there is definitely something to what you're saying but I also think there is something to finding the right guy for the right time, it happened with Blysma and seems to be happening with Sullivan.

I hate admitting this but this group of Pens is pretty exciting to watch.

no, **** that, I hate them too much.

I don't know if making the 3 quarters for a dollar trade is a route i want to go down again in Philadelphia see Barkley. Charles .

I also think guys like Tyler Leier, Nick Aube-Kubel and Travis Konecky have plenty of speed and will be with the Flyers in the near future. It has become a skating league and the Pens have guys that can skate, we have prospects that reflect this model, it will just take some time to get them on the team, because we have guys like Umberger and Read who need to quit or get bought out...patience sucks.

I know this your post is more about what the Flyers aren't doing/need to do moving forward, but I want to talk about the Pens a minute.

A talented roster, a team that is hot at the right time, and quality/timely goaltending;  that's a recipe that can win a Cup.  Hard at it is for us Flyers fans to accept.

The Flyers are getting closer; there's talent in the pipeline FINALLY!  They have a ton of draft picks and their cap situation continues to improve.  But it's gonna take time.  :-(

As far as your criticism of Couturier goes though, I'd suggest picking on a guy who actually played in the playoffs this year... or you know... at all recently.   He has what?  two playoff appearances?  One of which was pretty amazing.   I honestly feel like if Coots hadn't gotten hurt, the Flyers would have taken it the full 7 and might have actually had a chance.  As it was, the Caps got goals on the PP from their big scorers (Couturier's specialy) and that made a big difference.

Now if we want to talk about being concerned that Couturier is injured a lot... I can talk about that... as I am concerned about it.

Agreed on the Bums issue though.  Malkin and Crosby and LeTang didn't win this one for them, just like Simmer, Jake and G didn't make us competitive in Round 1.  The difference was the second tier guys.  I've been saying for a while that we need 1 more skill guy with the hands to actually take a pass and hit the net in the top 6, but beyond that, even more so than the Defense (which everyone's lamented for 3 years, but which actually hasn't proved that bad) we need a much much much better bottom 6.

I know Raffy's a top 6, but part of my point is that he in no way should be.  I'm sick and tired of hearing about how guys like Raffl and White and Belly and Read "don't score, but they everything right".  No they don't.  They have no touch, no hands, no skill.  It's not enough to play the position well.  How many times did I see Read in exactly the right spot to score a go ahead goal only to put up the weakest shot i've ever seen since the last time he did exactly the same thing.    Those roles don't need to be 30 or 25 goal scorers, guys in those roles don't score that many on good teams either.  But between the 6 of them, the bottom two lines on good teams are much better at getting that goal when it's NEEDED and they have the chance.  Our guys get the chance and blow it.

Read's a good guy and proved a lot of people wrong, but he just doesn't have the touch an NHL player needs now.  He needs to be able to score when he gets the puck and there's nothing between him and the goalie.

White is a guy who I think COULD play like those guys we lament not having in the bottom two lines and he shows flashes of it, but I don't think the supporting cast is good enough.

Laughton and Cousins I think could be a big help in the right direction, but they need to decide Laughton's role and Cousins needs much more seasoning.

It's a good assessment.  WE all liked to talk about the Flyers Hot streak at the end of the year, and the Press did too actually... even nationally.  But that was because they were a non playoff team making the playoffs.

The only team hotter in the league though was the Penguins!  There was a time when they might have been eliminated from the playoffs as the Flyers ascended.   If they penguins had played like they had been all year, they probably would have been eliminated.  But they played better and better.

I wasn't picking on couturier as much as I was saying that he won't fit on, what I think, is a winning formula.  He didnt, but if he did have 65 points in 80 games this season, I don't see that translating to a deep playoff run because of the way he plays.  I've tried to explain what I mean by that in other threads so I won't get into that here, but I just don't think it works...at least not on the second line.

As you brought up, his injury history is also becoming a problem.

As you also said, the bottom 6 was not good this year even though some people really like bellemare and vandevelde.  I would remove 5 of the bottom 6 (keep white), move couturier to 3rd line center, move Simmonds onto his line along with schenn, give giroux voracek, and add a speedster, replace the second line with three speedsters (koneckny and other prospects), and make the 4th line young, fast and tough...maybe thats a good spot for cousins and laughton. That's assuming you keep giroux, couturier, and Simmonds for the long haul.

God, I forgot about Vandevelde... and that's the problem right?  They love him... but he's utterly forgettable in his play.

I think they have to stop comparing the way these guys play to the way these guys USED to play or the way a rookie plays.  They need to compare the way their team plays to the way the rest of the league plays.  Or at least the way the "role players" on good teams play.

I like your whole post, but man was this both dead on and entertaining to read.

I was okay with our fourth line.  I said okay.  It was better than we often float out there as the fourth line.  They may sadly have been the best line in the playoffs for the Flyers.   But I also agree that Vandevelde is forgettable.  I'm telling you, 10 minutes after he leaves I'll completely forget he was ever here.

Yes, the supporting cast among forwards needs to be upgraded.  The defense, at this point, isn't horrible and some time in 2024 Hextall will bring up some prospects and we'll even be better.  At this point it's the forwards.   I did like what I saw in Cousins.  And I'm hoping on Leier and Konecny looks good.  So hopefully.   Get young, get rid of some of the huge contracts, and then you can plug holes in FA with talent ala Pittsburgh and some others.

I guess we're not there yet.  The good news is 2024 is only 8 short years and 2 lockouts away.

Them losing the series has zero to do with the Raffl and White and where they played.

They didn't get production from the guys making the big bucks. Period.

They scored 6 friggin goals in 6 games...hell they are lucky they even made it to 6 games.

The 6 goals came mostly from guys who aren't counted on the score. Raffl, White, Van develde, Ghost and Mcdud (who both scored more goals than Ekblad @flyercanuck)....

...the only guy making big bucks to score was Jake....once.

That ain't going to cut it.

They need guys who can score....and i don't mean guys who just shoot...i mean guys who can hit the net and actually snipe a shot.

The Caps are just better...but their game plan was executed better...all you have to do is pressure the Flyers and get in their face because they usually just want to pass instead of shoot always looking for that perfect shot.

They need two guys who can find the twine. Do that and it will get better.

But no way i'm going to put this on Raffl and White and those support/utility player types. Blame G, Jake, Simmer and Brayden.

They just got out played. They'll learn from this. It will be more beneficial to this group to go through this and lose than to worry about some stinking draft pick.

This should motivate over the summer if it doesn't i don't knkw what else will.

Edit: And i'm not just saying this to you just in general. I know with you it's Chip's fault!

GO BEAVERS!!!

First of all, the Caps were by far a better team. Second of all, the secondary scoring on the Flyers is nonexistent. Raffle, Read, White, VV, and the others all suck. They are not good NHL players.

Giroux was playing hurt, as we all know. Jake sucked all year, and sucked more in the playoffs. Mason was weak. Simmonds wasn't very good, but impacted by G's problems.

Only Schenn and Neuvirth played well.

The Flyers still have a major skill deficit compared to the other teams that made the playoffs.

That's overstated. Of those 4 guys, Read really disappoints and VV is a cheap 4th line guy who is big and can skate well. Decent checker. White is good, versatile pro, who is tough. But mainly a 4th line guy who could play 3rd line minutes if needed.

Raffl played well vs the Caps and does not deserve to be lumped in with the "suck" category.

THIS was plainly evident against the Caps. But it's also what we knew before training camp got started. Just remember where this lineup was the day before Hexy took over, that kind of metamorphosis takes time.

I think Raffl is playing too high in the lineup , on a contending team he's on the third line where his compete level, his reach and skating make him hard to play against.

We just don't have the depth to slot him where his game is best suited.

I like Ryan White, he is fine in his role. i would take 3 more of guys like him if i could.

I also thought Chris Vandevelde was fine, he is not great, he was fine for his role. He's cheap like you said. His type of player is the problem though, we need more skill from guys like him, better depth players.

Yeah, that seems to be the consensus on Raffl. I agree re skill. We need more of it for sure.

Great post. No arguments here. (Ninja).  I was going to crack a joke about how you butchered Kuhnhackl and Bonino but you took care of that.  And hey - you got Sheary and Rust right.

You said what I have been saying all along.  This model (let's call it the "Pens Model") can work if you can find inexpensive pieces to put around the 4-5 guys taking up all that Cap space.  Who cares if it is via the draft (Kuhnhackl, Maatta, Rust, Murray), trade (Bonino, Dumoulin) or free agent signing (Cullen, Fehr, Sheary). When you add that many kep components to Crosby, Malkin and Letang (OK - and Kessel) you are going to have a good team especially when they are all making under $2,000,000. Heck - most are under $1,000,000.

Another great post...except for the part about being "hot".  "Hot" (i/m/h/o) is playing like they have been for a few weeks.  Maybe even a month.  The Pens have been playing like this since mid-January.  That's not "hot".  That's just a really good team.  They haven't lost BTB games during that time, playoffs included.

Eff the Penguins. I hope they lose all their remaining games, then get flat tires on the way home from the airport.

How's that?

@AJgoal

thank god someone came back to their senses here.

C'mon.  I'm sure some Pens fans were pulling for the Flyers way back when you played the Russkies.  That has to count for something.

All I've got for this is LOL.

I have every intention of cheering for the Bolts in this series, but not against the Pens.  Just because I like a number of players on that team.

I'm curious, though (and I'll come back and tell you), who I'm going to be cheering for when the game is actually on.  I'm interested in finding out, when the game is actually on, which team I'm saying "Yeah!" about when they score and which "dammit!" when the other team scores.   I don't think it's happened this year, but last year there were two different series where I went in thinking I was cheering for one team and my spontaneous reaction during the game was the exact opposite (Tampa/Wings was one.  I thought I was cheering for Detroit going in.  The other was Pitt/NYR last year..I went in thinking I was cheering for the Rags.  I didn't.

So, I guess wait and see until they're on the ice.  I've been cheering for the Pens in two consecutive series, so it may be old habits and all that rot.
