Flyers have traded Sean Walker/2026 fifth-rounder to Avs for 2025 1st/Ryan Johansen

Recommended Posts

WTF now they say the 1st is conditional???

Why???

Philadelphia Flyers @NHLFlyers TRADE ALERT: We have acquired a conditional first-round selection in the 2025 NHL Draft and center Ryan Johansen from Colorado in exchange for defenseman Sean Walker and a fifth-round selection in the 2026 NHL Draft.

Conditional?? It's not like the Avs would go for a top ten protection. No chance in hell they would drop off so much within a year. So wonder what the condition is?

Walker resigning?

It's top 10 protected.  That's all.

Exactly shouldn't have had to given up a 5th too.

Whatever.

I just said it in the other thread....if we're taking Johansen back why are we throwing in a 5th? Cause that's what Flyer GMs do? Throw away draft picks?

I know it's only a 5th, but the more picks you have the better chance of catching lightning in a bottle. It's why we don't...cause we always throw in draft picks.

So, Walker is out.  Shot Blocker Specialist is on IR--probably negating a trade.  So.....will a forward move?

If I understand correctly, Nashville retained half his AAV in the trade to Colorado.  So, the hit will not too bad.  One account says he's a buyout candidate.  Here's the capgeek estimate.  How this works with salary retention is beyond me:

Yep Noah Cates and Oskar Lindblom were 5th round picks off the top of my head.

Flyer GMs don't think draft picks after the 1st mean anything?

I agree you don't waste assets.  On the other hand, the last time I looked, round 5-7 picks have less than 40 percent chance of playing 100 or more games in the NHL.  It is about 70 percent for first and about 60 for second.  The 5-7 rounds are an undifferentiated blob.  Are we blowing something by giving up a 5th.  Yes. But it is relatively rare for this level pick to pan out long-term.  I suspect they pried it it out of us. Getting a first for someone you really weren't expecting much of is OK.

I just saw a piece on the Hockey News about this trade.  The author contended that the Flyers might flip him and absorb another 50% of his salary.  So, someone might get a 25 point forward for 2 million.  WTF.   Waiving him within minutes is interesting.

I was going to say this was a great trade until I saw that Johansen has one more year.  So it's a good trade instead - not sure how much cap is going to matter next year (i.e. how competitive will they be).

The bottom line is that the Flyers leveraged their assets (UFA and cap space) for a much better future asset.

Next year they may be able to deal Johansen for something at the deadline.

I just got to the part where they resigned Seeler.  That is incredibly dumb.

Paying a guy $2.7M at that age because he's too unskilled to do anything other than not get out of the way of the puck is not a winning move.

My guess is he loses a step at 32 and is basically unplayable from that point on.

Those managment guys ****** love that guy.

He wants to be a Flyer. I think we underestimate how much that means to this group of managers.

I think the deal is for too long, it's not the worst thing to happen- but it's not the best either.

And it took a four year deal

Twice as long as any non-entry level deal he ever had

At almost four times what he was making

With a NTC

How much did he WANT to be here?

I mean, make me an offer...

🤔
