they also came very close to winning the cup with him. had they done that, we wouldn't give a rat's posterior region that we mortgaged the future. and it very nearly worked.

They came closer to missing the playoffs altogether than they did to winning the Cup though. Seriously, when the OT period ended in the last game of the season against the Rangers did anyone really think the Flyers were headed for the playoffs? It's not as if Pronger transformed the team into some kind of powerhouse.

It's eerily reminiscent of the infamous Buffalo "no goal" argument.

Many are of the mistaken opinion that if Buffalo scores there instead of Hull, they win the Cup. They would just win game 6 and still have to win Game 7.

Same thing with the Flyers against Chicago. They were a goal and a game away from the Cup.

Made the playoffs on a shootout (went something like 3-10 down the stretch). Relied on two of the most improbable happenings in the history of the game occurring in the same playoff series to beat Boston. Lost by a goal and a game.

Nice run, lots of fun. Didn't win.

If the bar was "Cup or bust" with Pronger - and it was - then the only answer is "bust."

Casinos exist because of people who make moves like that.

Of course the ultimate goal is the Cup. You get bragging rights for an entire year, and it would be nice to see the guys you cheer and curse day in and day out go all the way.

BUT, professional sports is really just entertainment. And I was incredibly entertained during that run. I've said it before that it was the best Flyers playoff run I've ever seen in my life. No question. The 1980s are too distant for me to remember clearly. But in the here and now, this was it.

So, they didn't win, and that's a shame. But I'll take it. It's a run I'll never forget.

Was I not entertained by the playoff run? I was.

No one will ever forget the Boston series because, quite frankly, nothing like it has ever happened before and it is extremely unlikely that it will happen again.

And in the sheer sense that, as you note, "sports is really just entertainment" I can agree that it clears that bar. But I watch movies, theater and TV shows and listen to music for the sheer sense of entertainment.

I was "entertained" by the Primeau-era swan song (anyone else reminded of the Tucker hit on Kapanen when Orlov plastered Schenn yesterday?). I was "entertained" by Lindros' run to Detroit. I was "entertained" by Hextall against Edmonton. I was "entertained" by the record-setting unbeaten streak.

But in the sense that sports is an activity with a goal and that goal is to win, they all fall short.

There's a point at which "entertainment" just isn't enough anymore. Some have reached it. Others have not.

I may have shared this before, don't remember.  My best memory of that run....Game 4..I'm watching the game with a bunch of Bruins fans.  We are all watching the game outside on my buddy's deck; after regulation, guy gets up to make a beer run inside.  Comes back out, and very quietly sets a broom down beside the TV.

When Gagne scored in OT, another Bruin fan broke the broom over the deck railing.   I still have both pieces as a memento.

When the Flyers won, I bought 4 brooms(one for each win), and left them on his front porch.  To this day he has never said a word about receiving them.   :D

I will never forget that goal Lights Out Leighton gave up either...

or the other 200 that were directly his fault, LOL good ol' Leaky. I just threw up in my mouth a little. He flat out lost us the Cup, end of story.

In the end, the comeback against Boston is/will be at least as, if not more memorable than a Stanley cup win (pfffffffttttt, someone wins that every year ).  Though, the fairly tale should've ended with the flyers winning the cup.

No, l was 0 at the time :).  But think about it, basically only flyer fans care about those cups, other fans don't (as would be expected)  But now, playoff series in which a team goes down 0-3, part of the story before the 4th game (and if won, game 5,6,7) will be, can they make a miracle comeback like philly did in 2010.  Its a moment that will be kept alive by flyer fans and non flyer fans alike.

Good point. And that Flyers/Pens series a few years back was way more memorable than the Flyers/Hawks SCF. Other than the obvious from the SCF, what I remember most is Pronger stealing pucks.

@DaGreatGazoo  Great story DGG!!  Personally, game 7 took it's toll on me. After climbing out of the seemingly impossible hole, we go down 3-0 in the first, I had a puke bucket next to me and was on my hands and knees with the room SPINNING after they scored the 3rd goal....it actually physically affected my balance and stomach contents!! LOL!
