Fire away .... that certainly did not take long.  Torts benches Laine mid-way through 2nd period.

"On Monday night, Columbus defeated the Carolina Hurricanes by the score of 3-2, but Laine was sent to the bench for the entire third period on what was viewed to be due to lackadaisical defensive effort on Brock McGinn’s game-tying, second period goal."

Tweet of the night .......

If Torts had coached Edmonton in the 80's, he might have benched Gretzky.

She is extremely perceptive ..... :)

He absolutely deserved it. Once was bad, twice was unforgivable. Absolute right call.

Not arguing at all .... just pointing out it did not take long for Laine to get in Tort's doghouse and incur his ire and wrath ...

You and I both know that unless Laine changes his ways this is not going to end well .....

And to think some Flyer fans wanted Laine ......  could you imagine the ruckus on this board if Laine pulled that stunt while wearing the O&B ..... there would be pitchforks and torches coming at him .......  Not denying his ability but his lackadaisical style of play is as irritating as a hemorrhoid. Hence I was never in the "bring him to Philly side of the fence."

I wonder if they'd have time to notice, what with the telescope/microscope hyper-focused on the defenseman du jour or Giroux.

I watched the game last night and the wife was screaming at the TV when Laine just hovered 10 feet away from Mcginn allowing Mcginn to score a goal to tie the score. About five minutes later Laine did THE EXACT THING AGAIN this time Mcginn hit a crossbar. The wife looked at me and said, "you know torts is gonna glue his ass to the bench now dontcha?" He absolutely deserved it. Once was bad, twice was unforgivable. Absolute right call. Roslovic is looking like an absolute steal in the trade so far.

I just watched those two actions and that reminded me Ovechkin during the season he finished dead-last in +/- with -38.

Embarrassing and benching totally deserved.

I was watching this game but missed both plays (I was flicking around to other games) but noticed he'd been benched.   Given his history, I only assumed it was justified, but most other coaches wouldn't have had the stones.   Good on Fonzi.   Anywhere other than Columbus, that could endanger a coach's job.

Both plays can be watched in the game recap around 2:37 and 3:09 😉

Now it gets interesting. Will Laine come out fired up to the next game as some of the Finnish reporters are predicting or will he continue coasting? If he can take the heat CBJ (and the Finnish National Team) might eventually get a hell of a player, if not, he'll continue being a limited value PP specialist in need of sheltering, a luxury, not a game breaker.

He has a hell of a shot from 'Ovie;s office' and has stated for years that he could/would play hard in all situations if only given a chance, hopefully this straightens him out. Columbus has suffered long enough and needs a star player not a one dimensional scorer who offers nothing else.

For this reason, for all the "Stamkos isn't as great a goal scorer as he is made out to be" crap I hear, I am glad Stammer and his coaches decided to round out his game and be MORE than just a one time shot from the circles.

Sure, Stamkos likely never sees 50-60 goals a season ever again, but his overall game has made him a very good two way forward who is still going to contribute on offense.

I have a feeling that if Laine is to survive in Columbus (or most other places for that matter), he might wanna take a similar approach to his game.
He doesn't need to score 50 a year if he is doing things in other areas that helps his team win.

Goal prevention is just as important as putting it in the net.
Torts may be a PITA, but then, that is the point isn't it?

The sooner Laine realizes this, the better off he, and the Jackets, will be.

It was deserved.  Torts is issuing an early statement. Laine got away with it largely with Maurice. Mau usually only benched him for a few minutes and only like twice in 4 years.

On the other note, I picked up roslovic in all 3 fantasy leagues on a hunch he was being held back on that 4th line in the peg. He is a former 1st round pick after all. And he is from Columbus so he must be extra pumped.

His goal last night was beautiful

If he's smart - he'll learn from it and from Torts. He said that's what he wanted when he came in. This is accountability for that.

(That said, he does have three goals in four games before PLD took a shift in WPG :D )

And he would deserve it. The question is whether or not the player learns from it. In the 'Peg I think he was shoved down in the lineup, not really benched per se.

This is a big deal for both the player and the franchise.

Yeah, I think the "tough love" approach from Torts is better than the "soft" approach from Maurice.

Here's your kick in the posterior. Wake up, play the game right, or you're going to get another one.

And deserve it.

So Laine has put in 4 games and got himself benchedin Columbus....meanwhile Pierre Luc Dubois is just finishing up his quarantine in the Peg?

Speaking as someone with both of them on my FHL squad - yep...

It's practically Laine's specialty, so nobody should be surprised, least of all the team that traded for him.

Absolutely agree .... heck even in little league baseball I made one of our star players run laps because he was dog-in-it .... he never made that mistake again .....

As an RFA, I'm pretty sure keeping up that sort of play gets you a free trip to Omsk.

You can see Kazakhstan from there!

Yup. He's a child, and an unserious one at that. Great shot though. And Rico Fata could skate like hell.

In fairness, that infamous Dubois video didn't exactly set a high bar here.

I'm expecting a little more "skate" from PLD tonight...

PLD wants to play hockey and you watch: he will prosper in Winnipeg.

This is why I haven't yet traded him off my FHL. Saddle up!

If Torts can't kick some sense into him, he's simply not long for the league.

I'd say at best a bridge deal for probably less than he's making now and then the Omsk option.

Yes, Patrik, that is Jesse Puljujarvi (2Y, $2.35M) on the phone...
