GratefulFlyers
wow a PP goal by the Flyers? okay...chip away. Leafs built an early lead in Toronto and had to go to OT for the win. oh great now Couturier throws it over the glass...beautiful. Leafs' PP is ... kinda good. like 2nd best in the league. AlaskaFlyerFan
Much different period than the 1st. Leafs had a lot more time in the offensive zone but the Flyers held their own.

They had to at least make a show of trying to make the playoffs after trading Walker. But they did feature Gurianov, who has the benefit of not knowing how to pronounce "Foerester". This game adequately displayed the difference between a team gearing up for the playoffs and one that's been playing "playoff hockey" all season. GratefulFlyers
well they get another shot at the Leafs Tuesday night in Philly again. 6-1 blown out at home always sucks. 7 minutes ago, radoran said: This game adequately displayed the difference between a team gearing up for the playoffs and one that's been playing "playoff hockey" all season. It's more about a team missing 1 star player out of 3 or 4 more while the other is missing 4 of their top 6 D-men and those 4 are hardly star players. A classic mismatch. edit: and Samsonov outplayed Ersson and Sandstrom combined. Edited March 15 by GratefulFlyers

To his credit, Sandstrom played outstanding the second period but this is his normal self in the 3rd. Errson didn’t stand a chance on the first 2 but the third goal he let in was horrid. Not a Johnson fan.

Yeah Matthews took off as soon as the Leafs got control - Johnson had no chance keeping up with him. I cut Johnson some slack; not many D-men can match Matthews stride for stride when he's already in 3rd gear coming across the red line. Foerster with the shorty...always nice to see! Sanheim nice assist. Still a minute to go... only 4 goals to OT... Edited March 15 by GratefulFlyers
Poulin20
Ok so what I am getting a few games in is they are who we thought they were talent wise, but attitude wise they have an edge and can win some scrappy games. Soooo we need more talent to win is basically the conclusion here and when they arrive we will have the scrappy attitude and swagger to back it up. These absolute drubbing games at home were just murder to your soul as a STH. You paid good money fought horrible traffic, found free parking (well I did anyway), walked far, bought overpriced food and drink, and then watched your team get destroyed and sullenly skulked back to your car, potentially fought more traffic on the way home and wondered why you didn’t just stay home with your family. Nahhh I don’t miss it but if they get better and Hilferty keeps reviving the team back to what they were intended as founded, I could see a game plan in my future. I have it with the Phillies and it has been AWESOME. 2

Sums it up pretty well I think. The one thing about the games coming up is that the Flyers played all year with a set of D-men who are no longer in the lineup. Walker got traded the other 3 are hurt. With Walker, Seeler and Drysdale they beat some good teams this year, beat them convincingly. Now without those 3 it's getting ugly fast... Ersson struggling to play well feels like it could be the final nail, shutting the door to their PO hopes this year.

That makes sense what you are saying and explains why as soon as I choose to begin my journey back they are struggling. In some ways missing the PO could be a blessing so we see what we could be but don’t get too comfortable that we are there and then also get a better draft pick along the way. And, understand, I think the Leaves are fundamentally flawed in a couple of places, goaltending among them. But there's a reason the Leaves are pretty secure in a playoff spot and the Flyers are a two game losing streak away from being on the outside looking in. Cap friendly: The Leaves have a cap hit of $97M with $14M in IR adjustments. The Flyers have an $83M cap hit.
Howie58
Yes, we are having a reality attack. Stripping out the D via trade and injury is icing on the crapper. We have lost 8 in a row to Toronto. Their talent is truly high end. Hopefully, we get there. On that point, hearing Shaw and Thompson post-game has been refreshing. They acknowledge the problems. They provide context. I get Torts' anti-media gig, but as a fan, I lose some color. Shaw and Thompson are truly students of the game, and their take is a learning experience for me. We are blessed to have those guys on board. I wish we heard more from them.

The Flyers don't have any stars. The 4 D-men they're missing are not stars. Conclusion: mismatch. not sure how that implies the rosters are equal ... isn't it clear I'm saying exactly the opposite? Not a superstar, but he is a star player. But yes. Toronto has way more talent. If only there was a way for the Flyers to get some.....hmmmmm.
Howie58
When speaking of talent and the Flyers, I go back to my "DNA Hypothesis," and why I mentioned Rathje in the SJ game thread. For too long, the people running this team put physicality over skill and speed. And it has kept us from moving out of the fair-to-middling ranks, with an implosion under AV. I don't think we will ever see MM, but I can accept Briere and Company swinging for that fence. The Gurianov deal is similar. The guy may be an NHL bust. But he can fly and seems to have a good shot. I don't think the former Flyers management really scoped high end talent. They wanted people who could play "Flyers Hockey" Acquiring Nic Deslauriers made us "tougher to play against." Right. The big difference is everyone would expect the Flyers not to advance but the Leafs are expected to with all of that high end talent. They're great in the regular season but suck in the playoffs. I hope the Flyers don't win any of their remaining games and fall a lot in the standings to get a better pick. Ersson looks like he's tired!
