MDZ - sign to a new deal or not?

He strikes me as the "Andrew Alberts" kind of guy who doesn't do anything particularly well, but tries to stay in position and not make dumb plays.

Yep. Not spectacular, but relatively positionally sound. He won't wow you offensively or make great defensive plays, but he doesn't seem like one to make great defensive gaffes, either. As @aziz said, exactly what I want out of my #7.

I was initially furious with this signing, but he is respectable. MUCH better than Homer's attempts at adding a 7th dman.

I'm also pleasantly surprised with MDZ. Totally agree, no rush here. When you have a guy who has basically been kicked off 2 different teams as a youngster, you should take every single moment you can to evaluate. Does the glass shoe turn into a pumpkin during the playoff push etc, etc. Is he committed to doing whatever it takes to making his mark in this league, these are questions that need to be answered over a much longer time frame.

Another thing to consider, with each new d-man we sign, we make it that much harder to fit our fine young stable of defensive prospects into the NHL. Streit and McDonald signed long term already, MDZ and Ghost make 4...Coburn, Grossmann and Luke the Fluke (HELL YEAH!!!) only have 2 years left....so you could squeeze Morin and Hagg in there in 2 years, probably when they will be ready....but that does leave no room for anyone else. Not saying it won't work, just saying it's cutting it close.

  EDIT....forgot about Sanheim.....see what I mean?

Coburn is tradeable (modified NTC). So are Grossmann (same) and Schenn (NTC kicks in next year). Or Del Zotto for that matter.

Weren't people trying to run MDZ out of town just last week? And Schultz?

Winning is a funny cure...

I am still not wild about Nick Shultz... however, he has been fine. whether that is because everyone is playing defense and dropping back to help on the breakout or he is becoming more comfortable with what Chief want him to do... i don't care.

he isn't dropping the puck to no one in the neutral zone, he isn't chipping the puck to areas where the is no support, he is now making decent clears and outlet passes.  i don't care why i'm just glad he's cleaned his game up and has become the "faceless jobber" who knows his role.

I don't remember "physical " as being part of his game so if that's what you are looking for...I can see where you'd be undelighted.

I thought he battled along the boards well enough and used his stick well in those battles to separate it from the man he was checking.

I agree.   I see MDZ use his stick well.   Not every D-man needs to be a physical bruiser to be effective.   He also only has 2 PIM so he can use his stick without picking up 2 mins for stick infractions.  I also see him hustle and give an honest effort on just about every shift.   His mistakes seem coachable and he is still young and has room for improvement.   I'm not blown away by his play but I'm pleased as he hasn't been a liability out there.  Certainly outplaying the likes of the overpaid Andrew McDonald and Luke Schenn.

So it has been what, 13 games now?  I read more and more positive posts about him.  From watching him I see his confidence growing more and more.  Nice to see him get a goal last night too.  I read somewhere else he would be a restricted free agent this summer - is that correct?

Correct - he would be RFA.

@brelic  Thanks for the confirmation.  So all they need to do is qualifying him with a 10% increase?  I could see this going to arbitration if they don't offer a decent contract.  Either way I see him as a keeper as of now.  I also hope he still gets 20 minutes of total ice time with the other 2 come back from injury but I don't know how that will be possible.

Am I just going to have to start adding "lol" to each thread until I get off probation?

The thing with Del Zotto is that most of his problems have been between his ears.    The fact that he has had his best two games of the season after this mess has come out is incredible to me.

Last year this would have sent him into a tailspin.

@Smeetsya   Welcome Smeets....nice to have a poster with a working knowledge of MDZ from last year. I was very skeptical at first, hears all kinds of negative things ie uncoachable, horrible in his own end......have seen *none* of that in Philly.

Thanks.  Having to have your posts approved really cuts down on my ability to rant.....

It's basically a filter to remove those who think they found a free site to advertise their own personal interests, sites, sim leagues etc.

He won't go to arbitration. That is the kiss of death as a hockey player. He likes Philly and he will work out a deal. He was damaged goods in a sense. If he continues playing as he has (and the minutes), he is going to get a significant pay raise (I am venturing in the 4m per year on a gap contract).

No. I have already had enough of reading about this guy's foibles in the gossip column (OK, CrossingBroad).

This guy's focus should be on trying to revive his once-promising career as a potential NHL star, not chasing after porn stars.

He does not get it and probably never will.
