and you do? all you talk about is picks, what you dont talk about is players, what players do you want in the draft then?

Since you asked here you are .... (Unless we get lucky and get either Bedard or Fantilli)

As of now Flyers are picking #8

Leo Carlsson:  "The top Swede in the ’23 draft has been a highlight machine, routinely going through defenders with skilled moves and then putting them on his back and driving to the net, showcasing the power in his game."

There isn’t any doubt that Carlsson is going to be an impactful player in the NHL one day. Whether it’s at centre or on the wing remains to be seen. The combination of his high-end skill, hockey IQ and two-way abilities in all three zones will have teams line up for his services. He can potentially be an all-situations kind of player– effective at five-on-five, a power play specialist– he can do it all and would still be able to put up strong offensive numbers. The fact the he continues to thrive against men as a teenager shows that his ceiling is high.

He is top 5 talent and will be gone before the Flyers pick him.

Matvei Michkov: The top end of Michkov’s game is as good as anyone in the draft class. Michkov is a highly skilled shooter who can score from just about anywhere on the ice. This an uber-talented star in the making. However, my concern is will that star ever shine over North America due to the political atmosphere in Russia.

Will Smith: Smith is a slick dual-threat attacker who can create offense for himself and his teammates. When Smith is cutting and dashing through the middle of the ice, he draws attention as defenders feel the need to assist their teammates who are generally a step behind and making a desperation play themselves. Will Smith is a dynamic offensive player who is centering the NTDP’s top line this year and is very creative offensively while being reliable defensively.

Smith is almost certainly going to be a top-10 pick on draft day, with a good chance at ending up in the top-six or so. He’s clearly not in the top tier of the draft class with guys like Connor Bedard and Adam Fantilli, but there’s no doubt he’s near the very top of that next group.

I would list more more .....however....

I'm sure you are quite incapable of doing any research on your on as proven by your posts ......

Will Smith. In Philly. What could go wrong?

He'll take a wrong turn, accidentally end up in West Philly. He'll get in one little fight and his mom will get scared and send him to live with his uncle and auntie in a place called Bell-Air.  Where he'll smack the **** out of some dude named Chris.

Sorry, I don't mean to pile up, but you *are* clueless.

You are asking what should be done?  I will tell you the right way to do things.  Jim Nill, the Dallas Stars' GM signed their star player Hintz to an 8-year contract extension through 2031 worth $67.5 mil. A little earlier, he signed his three other stars: Jason Robertson to a 4-year contract extension worth of $7.7 millions a year; Jake Outtinger to a $12 million a year for 3 years; and Miro Heiskanen to 8 years worth $67 million.  In other words, he signed the core of his club to long-term very favorable, cap-friendly contracts now with still room remaining in salary cap. And they are a team that has been contending for the Stanley Cup over the last several years. That's how smart, knowledgeable GMs operate - they prioritize what's called asset management (look it up) almost above anything else and don't commit to players who are secondary. And that's why you won't see Nill signing players like Tony DeAngelo or friggin' Ristolainen to outrageous contracts, or Travis Sanheim to 8 years worth of $6.3 a year.

Plus, Nill just somehow managed to move Khudobin - a formidable task many pundits of the NHL considered simply impossible.  That's what good GMs do.

You want another example? The Sabres (who the Flyers fans actually love to laugh about) signed Dylan Cozens to a 7-year extension at $7 million a year. That's what is called good GM'ing.  You want to know why it's good?  Because Dylan Cozens is just about as a perfect young two-way player as one can find in the NHL today. His defense is flawless. He will play one-on-one against any star player of the opposing team. His offense is improving so quickly that in 2-3 years, Buffalo fans will forget who Jack Eichel was. And Cozens is only 21 years old. In 3 years from now, he will be worth much more than $7 million a year on the team that already has Tage Thompson, Rasmus Dahlin, Owen Power, Jack Quinn, and Luukkonen.

Sorry, but you really have no idea what you are talking about....

Fabulous post .....full of logic and crystal clear examples on how to run a NHL franchise the right way .......

With that being said ....it will go over his head.

LOL ...you are so clueless it is laughable and mildly entertaining to a point.  I must admit you do keep me amused...

The FO is horrible ... as a fan I have every right to be PO at the idiotic moves Fletch and company have made.  Are you seriously willing to pay 3 draft picks on a locker room cancer and worst defender in the NHL known as DeAngelo?

Risoto was an obvious mistakes except this wonderful FO decides to extend him on a horrendous contract.  Are you really ok with the play of Risto?  Are you seriously willing to pay a bloated extended contract to this detrimental player?

This is what the national hockey writers are saying:

"The ineptitude of Fletcher and the organization has created an outrageous level of dissatisfaction within the Philadelphia fan base. The Flyers continue to avoid making changes because they don’t recognize the full severity of how bad their situation has gotten, and their misguided perception continues to dig their hole deeper."

"Moving veterans on expiring contracts ahead of the trade deadline for future draft picks or prospects is one of the simplest concepts involved in helping a team get younger."

It was an EPIC failure on his part not to accomplish any of these goals .....

Further more ..."Moving van Riemsdyk looked like a given. The former second-overall pick was the prototypical trade deadline acquisition. He’s a 33-year-old veteran on an expiring contract ..... Fletcher’s failure to move such a sensible trade chip for any return package whatsoever indicates the incompetency of a GM unfit to negotiate NHL trades. His mistakes have dug the Flyers into an enormous hole with a roster that lacks the talent to compete for a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, a detrimental salary cap situation, a lack of top-end talent in the prospect pipeline, and a lack of rich draft capital likely to improve the situation. He blatantly blew an easy chance to improve one of those weaknesses by acquiring a mid-round pick or an average prospect for van Riemsdyk."

These are not my words but the words of NHL experts .....  Fletch is the epitome of the laughing stock of the NHL.

Still even others have stated .....

"The questionable decisions the Flyers made over the summer cost them more draft capital and financial flexibility. Fletcher dealt three future picks for Tony DeAngelo, who has become a defensive liability on the blue line. Despite a self-admitted lack of top-end talent, he ignored star winger Johnny Gaudreau’s obvious interest in coming to Philadelphia because of concerns about a long-term contract. However, he’s handed out expensive long-term contracts to lesser contributors like Travis Sanheim, Rasmus Ristolainen, and even Nicolas Deslauriers (with a lesser financial investment) within the past year."

So let me get this straight ...you are ok trading for and extending Risto, who is far below the talent level of Johnny Hockey, yet Fletch does not even make an attempt for Gaudreau. Now in all fairness Johnny Hockey himself is not single-handedly going to turn this franchise around, but it would have been something to start to build around.  It would have been a logical legitimate attempt to move forward.

Also, how in gods name do you give a no movement/trade clause to a player like Deslauriers???  Mind blown ...

Again NOT my words but the words of the experts out there.  You can argue all you want and hug your Fletch doll at night. but the sad fact is no one in the league respects Fletch.  No One!

He has allowed the Flyers to crash and burn over the past five years. After one reasonably successful season in 2019-20, Fletcher now faces one of the worst cap situations in the league, a limited supply of draft capital because of shortsighted trades for veteran players, an underwhelming prospect pool, and an expensive roster that never realistically had a chance to compete in 2022-23. He could’ve taken the first step to improve the situation with sensible deadline moves to bring in younger players or draft picks. However, he just didn’t execute it properly.

Even Torts (who I was against bringing in) admitted on a radio interview a few days ago that this organization lacks respect among the NHL teams.

And I quote: "“I just think when people are there a long time, players, staff, everything, there’s a sense of entitlement. Listen, we’re pretty much nonexistent in the National Hockey League as far as respect. We need to earn the league’s respect, and that’s about staying together, getting the right people involved in all this, and doing it the right way, and understanding that no one is above anybody else, no matter how long you’ve been there: player, personnel, staff, whatever it may be,”

Pretty damning evidence ......

I'm so glad to know that Fletch has a friend in you..... I bet he goes to bed with a smile on his face knowing you are probably the lone supporter of his .........

So yes ..... myself and 99.999% the rest of the Flyer fans on this forum despise what Fletch has done or not done.

For the record your sarcasm is noted .....Fletch is not smart of enough to trade for McDavid / Matthews

Tucson is either Dave Scott, Paul Holmgren or Chuck Fletcher. His entire statement is a disinformation campaign.

And that's the key - just don't make BIG mistakes, the kind that may haunt your team for years. A GM has to know whether a player has proven his worth and if not you don't offer him an 8-year contract. If a UFA's history is 40-50 pts he's not going to bloom into an awesome 2C. He's not worth a long-term deal either unless he's a bargain. I mean WTF this is basic stuff.

re: asset management, the number of unforced errors out of the Flyers in recent years is staggering.

If you were next to me, I'd kiss you.

I think all fans are giving different levels of criticism towards their respective GMs (sometimes with reason, sometimes not), whic makes sense because it's the most exposed job in a franchise with the coach position. You bring here a very good, objective and neutral point of view because I often read biased Stars fans opinions who thinks Nill is an average GM at best, or a guy to fire immediately at worst. I wish I could give the same type of insight for Philly fans but all I can do is cross my fingers for a FO clearing and start fresh.

Gostisbehere and Hagg and the 1st and 3 2nds you still have with also, too, more cap space.

In addition to what @radoran mentioned above, you give the youngsters a shot with the big club to see what you actually have as far as talent.  This includes but is not limited to:

York / Zamula / Wylie / Attard / and Ginning

All of whom are currently with the Phantoms at LV.

Acquiring both DeAngelo and Risto was a complete waste of assets.  Combined this organization traded away:

2021: 1st RD

2022: 4th RD

2023: 2nd RD / 3rd RD

2024: 2nd RD

And is paying a combined $10 million / yr x this year and next year.  Risto then goes on for 2 more years after that at $5.1 million / yr.

At this moment in time who would you rather have ......

Ghost

image.png.b72e86dea6e44123873fde193d7edae0.png

With 12 G / 23 A = 35 PT @ $4.5 million for this year (UFA next year)

And still retain those 3 draft picks

OR

The trouble maker in DeAngelo

10G / 24A = 34 PT @ $5.1 million/yr x2 years

and we TRADED AWAY 3 draft picks

The smart play is Option #1.  Ghost struggled here because of injuries and questionable coaching ....

In a perfect world I would rather have Ghost over DeAngelo.

Again a complete waste of money and assets from an incompetent GM.....

yes. That's what I think.

No proof, of course. But the signing was so far out of character it didn't make any sense to me at the time.  In general, but specifically as it related to Hextall's MO to date.

It just seemed like he was very methodical and longue duree and was suddenly swinging for the fences with a move that had Holmgren written all over it.

Of course, if you bring back that second overall pick and he actually becomes worthy of that draft position, you can say you were right all along.

Interesting.  I agree with your premise here

@Math

I am sure Nill has done his share of signings when Dallas' fans were scratching their heads. And not being a Stars' fan, my view/analysis is obviously slanted and, I am sure, incomplete. But based on a small sample I see, these most recent signings is a blueprint to solid GM'ing. I don't know how can anybody has any issues with signing your core of the team to very favorable long-term contracts and.... AND.... getting rid of Khudobin's contract?! If Dallas fans are unhappy, we can swap Nill for Fletch. 😎

Seriously?

Anyone. For 1/4 the cost. Neither one of them makes the team better. As a matter of fact, I think it's fair to say they both make the team worse.

Keeping Ghost and Hagg would have saved the team a 1st, 3-2nds and a few other picks, and almost $5 million a year in salary. pretty sure we'd be better off with that scenario.

really shows on how much you value defense because that lineup was disaster in 2021 but because of just money, it's ok to see our goalies get lid up 5 goals at game and think that's going to win games.
